July 29, 2009 Recently revised American National Standard, ANSI Z80.17-2008, Focimeters, sets tolerances and specifies test devices to verify those tolerances for primary instrument used to measure optical power of lenses. To assure safety of workers who deal with balers, EIA published ANSI Z245.5-2008, which applies to baling equipment rated at 600 V or less, for outdoor or indoor use, and is employed in accordance with manufacturer's installation, operation, and maintenance instructions and procedures.

Urgent Action needed to preserve federal highway funding.

July 28, 2009 Allen Biehler, Secretary of Pennsylvania DOT and President of AASHTO, warned that state departments of transportation are living hand to mouth and would be forced to cut back projects if Congress fails to plug hole in Highway Trust Fund. If additional revenue is not provided to Highway Trust Fund for FY 2010, federal highway program will face cut of 86%, dropping to level of $5.7 billion, which is potentially calamitous for transportation industry.
Wood Construction performs well in earthquake simulation.

July 28, 2009 After being shaken for 40 sec in simulated 7.5 magnitude earthquake in Japan, a full-scale, 6-story condominium building made from wood atop one story of steel received good marks from researchers for stability and safety. Robert Glowinski, Group Vice President for Forestry and Wood Products, said information from this test can provide safe wood building options for earthquake zones as well as other applications. Main applications are buildings in urban and earthquake-prone areas.

MDOT Commended for use of Twitter during I-75 emergency.

July 27, 2009 John Horsley of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials commended the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), which used Twitter to communicate with travelers after a tanker truck crash and explosion on I-75 in Hazel Park. Short updates (tweets), posted during the shutdown, urged motorists to avoid the area and use provided detour information. Kirk Steudle, director of MDOT, said Twitter helped reach as many travelers as quickly as possible.

Also, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provides 30% investment tax credit to purchasers of wind turbines.
