AIA President makes statement on NRO leadership appointment.

June 16, 2009 Marion Blakey, AIA President and CEO, called the appointment of General Bruce Carlson (USAF-Ret.) as director of the National Reconnaissance Office "an important step in establishing the leadership our nation needs to continue our preeminence in space." Blakey went on to say that Carlson "brings a wealth of experience to the position, including considerable expertise in defense acquisition." An eagerness towards working together to address industry challenges was also expressed.
User Feedback contributes to proposed E2600 revisions.

June 16, 2009 Six months after the Spring 2008 publication of ASTM standard E2600, Practice for Assessment of Vapor Intrusion into Structures on Property Involved in Real Estate Transactions, the task group that developed it surveyed users to receive feedback on the new standard. Survey results have led to several proposed revisions to E2600 which are being balloted and will be discussed at the task group's October meeting. Revisions addressed clarification as well as technical and legal concerns.

June 16, 2009 Subcommittee E05.11 on Fire Resistance, part of ASTM International Committee E05 on Fire Standards, is developing proposed standards for test methods on vented construction systems, furnace exposure on test samples, and tunnel fire resistance. All parties interested in working on fire resistance standards are encouraged to join in the activities of E05.11 in developing these and other proposed standards. ASTM welcomes and encourages participation in its standards development.
Front-of-Package Program standardizes nutritional labeling.

June 16, 2009 NSF International and the American Society for Nutrition announced their joint roles in administering a nutritional front-of-package labeling program, the Smart Choices Program(TM). Providing manufacturers and retailers with front-of-pack icon plus calorie information, this program aims to bring consistency and clarity to the US marketplace. It will help consumers quickly identify products and select smarter food and beverage choices within specific product categories.

June 16, 2009 The ZigBeeŽ Alliance announced the availability of Golden Unit platforms that implement the ZigBee RF4CE specification, which was designed to replace IR remote controls with RF to offer non-line-of-sight operation as well as extend range and battery life for consumer electronics. Golden Unit status lets OEMs create ZigBee RF4CE certified products that allow for advanced interoperable communications between components and remote controls while providing interoperability between OEMs.

Twenty competing North American utilities represent the most recent winners of AWWA section competitions. Participants include the 2008 "Best of the Best" Winner, Louisville Water Company, Toronto Water, and New York City's Department of Environmental Protection.

Funds go toward supporting winners of NBT 2009 manufacturing grant awards. Camps target youth at critical level of secondary education, exposing them to math, science, and engineering principles to learn skills needed by industry workforce.
ASC unveils CAD symbol for specifying adhesives.

June 15, 2009 ASC, in collaboration with ASTM, has released ASTM International Standard D7447-08 and accompanying electronic symbol to enable engineers, architects, designers, and other end-users to represent adhesives on CAD drawings. Users can complete fields with information such as adhesive chemistry type and physical form, surface preparation, and curing information. Individuals can download executable plug-in of symbol from www.adhesives.org and use it in AutoCADŽ as well as TurboCADŽ.

BIO Statement calls AARP biologics study flawed.

June 15, 2009 Regarding a study on biosimilars presented to Congressional staff by the AARP, Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) issued a statement calling it "simplistic, misleading and extremely flawed." The statement goes on to say the study "is based on fuzzy math and even fuzzier assumptions" and that it "cherry picks the best selling biologic products to draw erroneous conclusions, ignoring the bulk of the biologics market."
BIO reports flaws in FTC report on biosimilars.

June 15, 2009 Jeff Joseph of BIO said that FTC's report offers summary conclusions that are based upon fundamentally flawed or highly selective assumptions. Joseph also stated report minimizes impact on innovation that would occur if biosimilar competitors could take advantage of investment made by initial innovators. With 1.3 million Americans employed in biosciences in 2006, additional 6.2 million jobs were created. BIO urges Congress to take more balanced approach to biosimilars policy, Joseph added.

June 15, 2009 In CDC's and HUD's supporting guidance for builders and homeowners, ASHRAE Standard 62.2-2007, Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality in Low-Rise Residential Buildings was recommended as effective way to minimize indoor air pollution through ventilation. Citation of standard by Surgeon General, said Andy Persily, highlights its relevance to national need for safe and healthy housing. Standard applies to spaces intended for human occupancy and structures 3 stories or less.

June 15, 2009 AASHTO Center for Excellence in Project Finance has launched website to help state DOTs, metropolitan planning organizations, and others find potential sources of revenue. Website is designed to identify set of funding and financing mechanisms that can be used to generate investment for transportation projects. Established in 2005, Center for Excellence provides transportation funding and financing tools, research services, technical assistance, and professional education programs.

June 12, 2009 Using ASTM International standard D7504, Test Method for Trace Impurities in Monocyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by Gas Chromatography and Effective Carbon Number, manufacturers can determine both trace impurities as well as purity of tolulene, mixed xylenes, and p-xylene. Standard is suited for use as aromatic process control, final product quality control, and commodity inspection.
