June 17, 2009 Environmental Design for Electrical Equipment Act of 2009, H.R. 2420, was introduced by U.S. House of Representatives on May 14, 2009. NEMA applauds Congressman Michael C. Burgess for sponsorship of EDEE Act, said President/CEO Evan R. Gaddis. Act establishes uniform federal standards on use of various compounds in certain electroindustry products (similar to RoHS directive), specifies exemptions for certain applications, and discourages proliferation of inconsistent state laws/regulations.

As administrator of HITSP, ANSI appreciatively acknowledges 35 organizations and 6 US federal agencies that have contributed their financial support to make this work effort possible.

June 17, 2009 ANSI, coordinator of the US standards and conformity assessment system, is accepting applications for certification bodies seeking accreditation according to requirements defined under the Toy Industry Association (TIA) Toy Safety Certification ProgramSM (TSCP). Competence will be assessed based on International Standard ISO/IEC Guide 65, General Requirements for Bodies Operating Product Certification Systems, associated IAF Guidance Document, and program requirements for the TSCP.

ANSI marked occasion by announcing that Geoff Bilau, senior writer for IAPMO Group, is winner of U.S. Celebration of International Accreditation Day paper competition. His paper, "How Accreditation Could Have Prevented an Outbreak of SARS," applied accreditation concepts to real-life scenario of worldwide concern.

June 17, 2009 ANSI testified at It's Too Easy Being Green: Defining Fair Green Marketing Practices, before U.S. House of Representatives committee. Hearing addressed consumer interpretation of green marketing claims and role of FTC in establishing/enforcing guidelines for fair and effective green marketing practices. Testimony was given by Scott Cooper as well as James Kohm, M. Scot Case, Urvashi Rangan, and Dara O'Rourke. Others discussed strategy to address next steps to facilitate green marketing systems.

June 17, 2009 From June 8-12, 2009, ISO Technical Committee 229, Nanotechnologies featured over 170 representatives from 23 countries. ANSI President/CEO S. Joe Bhatia offered opening remarks highlighting significance of nanotechnology standardization activities, noting that, based on May 2008 Woodrow Wilson Center listing, 800 nanotechnology-based products are on market. Various key ISO/TC 229 leaders also spoke and working/task groups met to progress standards development work in different areas.

June 17, 2009 At 31st meeting, ISO Committee on Consumer Policy ratified its existing charter to serve as advocate for consumer concerns in standardization. COPOLCO also encouraged ISO members to participate in COPOLCO and to support active participation of consumer organizations in COPOLCO's work. At same time, committee acknowledged contributions that public interest organizations can make by providing information and expertise on subjects of concern to consumers and COPOLCO.

June 17, 2009 A new issue of the Standards Bulletin, published by the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP), encourages the oil and gas sector to reference International Standards, developed by ISO, that address vital materials, equipment, and offshore structures. The new suite is being developed based on existing specifications, OGP member documents, and other industry input to address drilling, production, transport by pipelines, and processing of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons.

This standard, 1241-2000, identifies ADC error sources and lists test methods to perform required error measurements. It provides a basis for evaluating/comparing existing devices and also offers template for writing specifications for the procurement of new ones.

June 17, 2009 According to sales data released by PTDA, both U.S. and Canadian manufacturers experienced drop in sales in April 2009. U.S. manufacturers' sales were down 11.0% in April 2009 when compared to March 2009. Sales in April 2009 fell 29.8% compared to same period last year. However, orders in April 2009 increased by 2.2% over March 2009 sales. Canadian manufacturers' sales were down 3.0% compared to March 2009 and 32.6% when compared to same period last year.
