June 26, 2009 According to J.P. Stevens, AIA VP of Space Systems, NASA is most visible representation of U.S. space program and is critical to country's future leadership and competitiveness. AIA strongly supports proposed NASA budget of $18.7 billion, however, Stevens noted that zero growth is budgeted through 2013. Stevens recommended that U.S. Space Exploration Policy and Constellation Program be national priority to minimize impending gap in U.S. human spaceflight.
France joins international youth rocketry challenge.

June 26, 2009 GIFAS, the French aerospace industry association and Planete Sciences announced that France will field rocketry competition this fall and will compete against UK and U.S. teams next year at Farnborough International Air Show. International youth rocketry contest brings together teams of middle and high school students to design, build, and launch model rockets with raw-egg payload that must return to ground unbroken.
Clean Energy Leadership Act includes NEMA provisions.

June 25, 2009 Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee approved American Clean Energy Leadership Act of 2009 by bipartisan vote of 15-8. Bill includes recommendations that NEMA provided when it testified before committee in March. Some key provisions include: create Clean Energy Investment Fund, establish national Renewable Electricity Standard, require FERC to develop interconnection-wide transmission plan, and establish financing mechanisms for large and small manufacturers.
NEMA urges DOE to adopt new energy savings rule.

June 25, 2009 NEMA submitted comments to Department of Energy on Notice of Proposed Rule, Energy Conservation Standards for General Service Fluorescent Lamps and Incandescent Reflector Lamps. In these comments, NEMA provided proposals that will result in significant energy savings by removing least efficient lighting products on market. Document includes several scenarios that would result in phase-out of T12 lamp without causing disruption in marketplace.
OPC Foundation demonstrates analyzer device integration.

June 25, 2009 OPC Foundation has announced successful demonstration of data exchange between applications using OPC UA Analyzer Device Integration information model at ACHEMA Exhibition. Prototype of OPC UA client for OSIsoft PI System collected ADI server's spectral data, which was then visualized in Excel using PI DataLink. Results of reference implementation efforts prove that ADI specification can be implemented in way that allows connectivity with virtually any OPC UA client.

June 25, 2009 Steering Committee of EDDL ECT announces that their technical team has achieved milestones in effort to develop common solution for field device integration. FDI Team performed inventory of use case analysis and designed draft architecture concept and draft functional specifications. Architecture is a client/server structure based on OPC Unified Architecture technologies. Field Device Integration is realized by Device Package containing EDDL components and optional programmed component.
AEM urges swift action on infrastructure legislation.

June 25, 2009 Joining coalition of organizations, AEM urges Congress to move ahead on reauthorization of surface transportation legislation. According to AEM President, Dennis Slater, if Congress can make long term commitment to investing in infrastructure, contractors will be able to make needed investment in capital equipment that will meet short term need to put people back to work and long term need to repair and update US infrastructure.

Alliance goals include developing training resources, reducing/preventing exposure to hazards and addressing press safety issues, and promoting MIOSHA programs to district members.

Family of communication protocols for traffic management devices has been in development since 1996.

Expectations include a slight uptick in general economic activity alongside a slight improvement in incoming orders. Conversely, current average daily shipping levels were said to dip somewhat in June, and metalforming companies with portions of their workforce on short time or layoff increased to 81% in June.

Standard addresses determination of sulfur forms in coal.

June 24, 2009 Subcommittee D05.21 on Methods of Analysis invites all interested parties to participate in development of proposed new standard, WK22936, Test Method for Determination of Sulfur Forms in Coal by ICP-AES. Standard is to be based on D2492, Test Method for Forms of Sulfur in Coal, but will be focused on reducing required sample sizes. Gravimetric and atomic absorption detection methods will be replaced in proposed standard with inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy.
NAM Supports administration's WTO case against China.

June 24, 2009 Frank Vargo, NAM VP for International Economic Affairs, issued a statement supporting the announcement by US Trade Representative, Ron Kirk, that the US and EU are initiating dispute settlement procedures in the WTO regarding China's export restraints on raw materials important to US manufacturers. Citing "a clear violation of commitments China made when joining the WTO," Vargo said the "export restriction of 9 key raw materials has distorted trade and caused economic injury to NAM members."
