NTSB Official addresses passenger ship safety.

July 1, 2009 In address to Crescent River Pilots' Association, NTSB Acting Chairman Mark V. Rosenker applauded audience on efforts to reduce risks of moving passenger vessels in and out of ports and waterways in restricted visibility. Rosenker provided background of Board's Office of Marine Safety and highlighted some of its ongoing investigations, pointing to previously learned lessons. Also noted were NTSBs 2,300 marine safety recommendations since 1967.
ANSI conducts training for accreditation program.

July 1, 2009 ANSI Certificate Accreditation Program Committee held 3-day training program for organizations that issue education/training certificates to U.S. workers. Attendees studied ASTM E2659-09 and ISO/IEC 17011 and reviewed various materials, discussed case studies, and conducted sample assessments. Training/certification/accreditation leaders from 13 organizations will serve as assessors and committee members for ANSI-CAP program, which will be evaluated at follow-up meeting in January 2010.
Stakeholders Invited to discuss impact of cyber risk.

July 1, 2009 ANSI and the Internet Security Alliance (ISA) invite interested stakeholders to participate in a meeting to discuss Phase II of The Financial Impact of Cyber Risk: 50 Questions Every CFO Should Ask. This meeting, to be held on July 31, 2009 in New York City, will address the joint initiative designed to identify and respond to the current needs of the C-suite community regarding cyber risk. A workshop will take place from 9:00 am to 4:15 pm at Zurich North America in Manhattan.

July 1, 2009 ANSI invites all members of the ANSI Federation to recommend qualified candidates for membership on the Institute's policy and other committees. The three-year terms begin January 1, 2010, and conclude December 31, 2012. Nomination forms, one per ANSI member, must be submitted by July 20, 2009. Policy committees seeking new members (voting and non-voting) include: CAPC, NPC, IPRPC, IPC, and AIC.
Award Nomination Submissions are open for one more month.

Louis Costrell to be remembered as mentor to young experts.

July 1, 2009 Louis Costrell, a leader in the standardization of nuclear instrumentation within the US and globally, died on June 8, 2009. He was founder of the IEC TC 45, Nuclear instrumentation. His work in the early growth of nuclear instrumentation was influential, as he helmed the introduction of modular instruments standards for the industry. He served many other groups and committees, including ANSI ASC N42, Nuclear Instrumentation, and ASC N13, Radiation Protection.

July 1, 2009 ANSI - American Society for Quality (ASQ) National Accreditation Board (ANAB) is offering accreditation for the e-StewardsŪ Certification Program developed by the Basel Action Network. The e-Stewards Standard is for use by organizations that have electronics recycling, processing, asset management, and refurbishment operations. ANAB will provide oversight of third-party certification bodies that become accredited to conduct audits and issue certificates of conformance.

July 1, 2009 During keynote address at CommunicAsia conference and exhibition, Broadband Forum CEO, Robin Mersh, noted that despite economic downturn, people still depend on broadband. Mr. Mersh backed his view by highlighting latest statistics for broadband and IPTV. He pointed out that 20 countries had grown their broadband by 10% or more, with India and China particularly showing potential. IPTV's growth to 24 million lines is also helping broadband reach next level.
NIST announces report detailing smart grid development.

July 1, 2009 NIST today released for public review a report that identifies issues and proposes priorities for developing technical standards and an architecture for a U.S. Smart Grid. As part of 1st phase of 3-phase plan, 300-pg report is open for public comment for 30 days after publication of upcoming notice in Federal Register. Report, prepared by EPRI, will be used to draft NIST Smart Grid Interoperability Standards Framework document to be released by September.
ASTM International Committee F38 to meet in July.

July 1, 2009 ASTM International Committee F38 on Unmanned Aircraft Systems will meet on Wednesday and Thursday, July 22 and 23. It will open with briefing on small UAS landscape from FAA and F38 and discussion on standards needed to support regulatory efforts, based on FAA sUAS Aviation Rulemaking Committee recommendations. Topics will include determination of takeoff and landing areas, visibility and identification markings, design/construction/safety monitoring, and maintenance manuals.

June 30, 2009 AIA President and CEO Marion Blakey says organization is pleased that fuels subcommittee approved specification which, once approved by ASTM and accepted by FAA, will allow synthetic paraffinic kerosene from Fischer-Tropsch process to be blended with conventional fuels and used as substitute for crude oil-derived jet fuel. Decision is step to near-term approval of sustainable, plant-based biofuels as well as path to lower aviation carbon footprint.

June 30, 2009 Motorsports Institute Summer Camp, hosted by North Carolina Motorsports Association and SME Education Foundation, will be held June 15-19 at Central Piedmont Community College and Charlotte area motorsports facilities. Students will use RC cars to learn fundamentals of motorsports and manufacturing, working in teams to design/manufacture parts and solve manufacturing, design, and engineering problems. June 30, 2009 Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25), which reports economic activity for the $650 billion equipment finance sector, showed overall new business volume for May declined by 41% compared to the same period in 2008. However, month-to-month new business volume increased 2.4% from April. This survey also reported receivables over 30 days increased to 4.7%, and charge-offs decreased to 1.74%. Also, credit approvals increased to 66.3%.
