September 18, 2009 In recognition of his longtime support of aerospace and defense industry, AIA presents Senator Daniel K. Inouye with Wings of Liberty Award. Inouye, the second most-senior member of U.S. Senate, has been a member and former chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee for 40 years and member of Appropriations Committee, which he now chairs, for 38 years. Award is presented periodically to members of Congress who have made significant contributions to help bolster aerospace and national defense.

Cooperative Agreement gives blind people cell phone savvy.

September 18, 2009 National Federation of the Blind and Motorola Inc. announced today a cooperative agreement to promote technologies that will improve cell phone accessibility for blind consumers. Expected in 2010, certain Motorola cell phones will provide verbal readouts of information and settings to facilitate use of features. This cooperation ensures blind Americans have equal access to current cell phone technology through UIs that do not require vision.

September 18, 2009 The ACGIH has dropped metalworking fluids from Notice of Intended Change of Threshold Limit Value (TLV) for mineral oil. ILMA committee has submitted scientific responses to ACGIH annual update letter, for several years, saying that exposure issues associated with metalworking fluids have to do with contaminants generated while they are in use and not highly refined base oils. Also, ILMA believes exposure should be addressed through systems approach rather than single-number exposure limit.

September 17, 2009 California Division of OSHA has approved ANSI as official accreditation body of crane operator certification bodies. Accreditation is the culmination of a multi-month process to verify CB's compliance with requirements outlined in International Standard ANSI/ISO/IEC 17024, General Requirements for Bodies Operating Certification Systems of Persons. In conducting its accreditation activities, ANSI itself follows the International Standard ISO/IEC 17011:2004.

FDA publishes revisions to list of recognized standards.

September 16, 2009 U.S. FDA has issued new revisions to its list of accepted standards for use in premarket reviews of medical devices. Newly recognized standards include IEC 62366:2007, which helps manufacturers improve usability and safety of medical devices; ANSI/AAMI RD5:2003 (R2008) to ensure effective, safe performance of hemodialysis systems, devices, and related materials; and ASTM F2603-06, Standard Guide for Interpreting Images of Polymeric Tissue Scaffolds.
ISO DIS addresses social responsibility concepts.

September 16, 2009 International Organization for Standardization Working Group on Social Responsibility (ISO SR) announced that ISO 26000, Guidance on social responsibility, is published as a Draft International Standard (DIS). It will help usher organizations toward sustainable global economy by establishing common guidance on social responsibility concepts, definitions, and evaluation methods. National member bodies of ISO are invited to vote and comment on DIS text during 5-month balloting period.

September 16, 2009 The ZigBee Alliance announced that ZigBee RF4CE specification for advanced remote controls is available for public download. It replaces IR with RF communication in remote controls, allowing non-line-of-sight operation with extended range and battery life for consumer electronic remote controls. Announced in March 2009, ZigBee RF4CE is a standardized specification for RF remote controls that removes field-of-vision barriers and opens new capabilities by supporting 2-way communication.
