September 25, 2009 Released by OSHA, Ergonomics for Prevention of Musculoskeletal Disorders: Guidelines for Shipyards will provide practical recommendations for employers to minimize number and severity of workplace injuries in their facilities by identifying, evaluating, and controlling hazards. Public is invited to submit comments to draft guidelines until Nov 13, 2007.
Gallagher nominated to be 14th NIST director.

September 25, 2009 On Sept 10, the White House announced President's Barack Obama's intention to nominate physicist Patrick Gallagher to be 14th director of NIST. Gallagher, who has a doctorate in physics from the University of Pittsburgh, came to NIST Center for Neutron Research in 1993 to pursue research in neutron and X-ray instrumentation and studies of soft-condensed matter systems. In 2004, he became director of the NCNR, and in September 2008, he was appointed deputy director of NIST.
NIST Workshop covers standards for voting machine data.

September 25, 2009 Common Data Format Workshop, to be held October 29 and 30, will address creation of common digital language for electronic voting system data. Workshop will bring together election officials, auditors, manufacturers, testing labs, and others involved in election analysis, and will aim to establish agreement on what goals of common format should be. In addition to auditability and transparency, possible goals include integration between polling and registration devices and easing transition to electronic record-keeping.
Two Experts named to earthquake advisory board.

September 25, 2009 Two distinguished earthquake experts have been named to serve on Advisory Committee on Earthquake Hazards Reduction of the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program by Patrick Gallagher, deputy director of NIST and acting NEHRP Interagency Coordinating Committee chair. New ACEHR members are John Hooper, director, Earthquake Engineering, of Magnusson Klemencic Associates, Seattle, WA, and Susan Tubbesing, executive director, Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, Oakland, CA.
PMA releases September 2009 Business Conditions Report.

September 25, 2009 According to Sept 2009 Business Conditions Report, metalforming companies are less optimistic about trend in general activity and in expectations for new orders over next 3-month period than they were 1 month ago. Forty-seven percent of participants anticipate improvement in overall economic activity, down from 57% in August and 51% predict increase in orders, down from 62% in August. However, 53% report that shipping levels are above levels of 3 months ago, compared to 39% in August.
ANSI will host ISO General Assembly in 2012.

Formal offer and acceptance will be made at ISO Council meeting in September 2010. As host, ANSI will reaffirm U.S.'s commitment to international standardization; raise awareness of ISO to U.S. industry management; and contribute to spirit of international cooperation in standardization community. ANSI will offer sponsorship opportunities with benefits to contributing organizations.
ASHRAE Standard provides guidance for DOE federal standard.

September 25, 2009 Issued by the U.S. DOE, proposed federal standard for vending machines is based on ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 32.1-2004, Methods of Testing for Rating Vending Machines for Bottled, Canned and Other Sealed Beverages, which establishes uniform testing of refrigerated vending machines to determine energy consumption. DOE is adopting new energy conservation standards, finding that such standards "would result in significant conservation of energy and are technologically feasible and economically justified."
NIST Judges pick 15 organizations for final Baldrige review.

September 25, 2009 Panel of judges has selected 15 organizations for final review stage for 2009 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Experts will visit 2 organizations in manufacturing category, 2 in small business, 1 in education, 8 in health care, and 2 nonprofits, noting operational strengths and opportunities for improvement. Award recipients are expected to be announced in late November. Named after Malcolm Baldrige, 26th Secretary of Commerce, Baldrige Award was established by Congress in 1987.
Kroger Retail Chain joins ZigBee Board of Directors.

September 25, 2009 The ZigBee Alliance announced that Kroger, the nation's largest grocery retailer, is now a Promoter level member and the newest member of the ZigBee Alliance Board of Directors. Kroger, which joined the ZigBee Alliance as a Participant member in 2008, spans 31 states with a variety of store formats and will play a key role in leading efforts to expand ZigBee use in the retail industry as well as "further strengthen the thriving ZigBee ecosystem," according to Bob Heile, chairman.
Smart Grid Standards Report will be open for public comment.

September 24, 2009 On September 24, 2009 in Washington, D.C., U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke and NIST will present a report NIST Framework and Roadmap for Smart Grid Interoperability Standards, Release 1.0 for public comment. Following Locke's unveiling of the draft report at GridWeek 2009 at 8:30 am, an in-depth public briefing by NIST will include an opportunity for stakeholders to review the report's contents and learn about subsequent steps. The public will have 30 days to comment on the report.
NAM urges senators to support EPA time-out on GHGs.

September 24, 2009 NAM sent Key Vote letter to U.S. Senators urging them to support amendment by Senator Lisa Murkowski to prohibit EPA from issuing "endangerment finding" for carbon dioxide in attempt to regulate greenhouse gases under Clean Air Act. Endangerment finding with no guidance from Congress would only impose overly burdensome compliance costs on manufacturing sector, limit their ability to deploy advanced technologies, and delay economic recovery.
ASTM and NACE collaborate on corrosion terminology standard.

September 24, 2009 ASTM and NACE International have created joint standard NACE/ASTM G193, Terminology and Acronyms Relating to Corrosion, developed by Subcommittee J01.02 under jurisdiction of J01, Joint ASTM/NACE Committee on Corrosion. According to Harvey Hack of Northrop Grumman Corp., standard will be used by corrosion organizations worldwide to prevent confusion in corrosion testing and in interpretation of related standards. It contains more than 400 terms, along with list of acronyms.

September 24, 2009 ASTM International Committee E60 on Sustainability will address sustainability through workshop and standards development meetings taking place during ASTM October 2009 committee week in Atlanta, GA. Held October 18-19, Life Cycle Assessments: Methodology, Current Development and Application in Standards workshop will explore current LCA theory and application. Forums on infrastructure and packaging will be held October 19 to identify resources and information about sustainability.
ASTM Committee approves standard on concrete box joints.

September 24, 2009 ASTM International Committee C13 on Concrete Pipe has approved ASTM C1677, Specification for Joints for Concrete Box, Using Rubber Gaskets, developed by Subcommittee C13.08. According to John Meyer, it will provide minimum level of production and performance for owners who wish to specify culverts and storm sewers when precast concrete box sections with gasketed joints are furnished. Primary users will be municipalities, highway departments, and drainage or water control agencies.

September 24, 2009 A&WMA has issued call for abstracts for International Conference on Thermal Treatment Technologies and Hazardous Waste Combustors from May 17-20, 2010. Abstracts of 250 words or less are being sought for presentations containing new information about thermal treatment of radioactive, hazardous chemical, mixed, munitions, medical/pharmaceutical, municipal, and industrial wastes. They must be submitted online by Nov 2, 2009 and authors will be notified of acceptance by Dec 9.
ANSI to offer courses on standards programs administration.

September 24, 2009 Wilkins has been certified by NSF International to NSF/ANSI Standard 61: Drinking Water System Components - Health Effects and Annex G low-lead requirements, which was developed to help protect the public from exposure to lead. For certification, manufacturers must meet lead requirements set forth in California Health and Safety Code by January 1, 2010. In obtaining certification, Wilkins has demonstrated compliance with all NSF/ANSI Standard 61, Annex G requirements.
