US Ground Based Augmentation System is approved by FAA.

September 23, 2009 Honeywell's Smartpath Precision Landing System, which increases safety and efficiency at airports by providing precise navigation service based on GPS, has gained FAA approval. The first US-approved system is located in Memphis, TN and will become operational early next year. Randy Babbitt, FAA Administrator, said this approval "marks the successful completion of a partnership between the FAA and Airservices Australia to build and certify a ground based augmentation system (GBAS)."
DSS and WSC announce call for papers.

September 23, 2009 American Water Works Association announced that the 2010 Distribution Systems Symposium and Exposition (DSS) and Water Security Congress (WSC) Call for Papers is open. Suggested topics include water loss and contamination control, asset management, network modeling, distribution system design, contamination warning systems, physical/cyber security, as well as security and emergency response. DSS and WSC events will be taking place September 12-15 and co-located in Nashville, TN.
ATA Report details declines in passenger demand, cargo.

September 23, 2009 Air Transport Association of America (ATA) reported, based on sample group of carriers, that passenger revenue fell 21% in August of 2009 versus same month in 2008. This marks tenth consecutive month passenger revenue has declined from prior year. Statistics noted that 6% fewer passengers traveled on US airlines in August, while average price to fly one mile fell 17%. Also, US airlines saw cargo revenue ton miles decline 13% year over year in July 2009.

ASHRAE Proposes mechanical ventilation requirements.

September 22, 2009 To help ensure quality of indoor air in naturally ventilated high-rise residential buildings, ASHRAE is proposing that mechanical systems be required for such building types. Proposed addendum r to ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2007, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality, requires most buildings with natural ventilation to have mechanical ventilation systems installed that are capable of meeting requirements of the standard's Ventilation Rate Procedure.
ESFI Receives fire prevention and safety grant.

September 22, 2009 ESFI will receive the US Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) award for Fiscal Year 2008 Fire Prevention and Safety Grant. ESFI's objective is to educate children and families nationwide about home electrical and fire safety. According to ESFI's president, funding will be used "to engage in the development and delivery of messaging and materials designed to fill a documented void in national public safety education."

September 21, 2009 In testimony before the House Armed Services Committee Panel on Defense Acquisition Reform, AIA's Richard Sylvester said the acquisition system can be a powerful tool to ensure systems/services provided to the Defense Department are at fair and reasonable prices and comply with cost, schedule, and technical performance contract parameters. Dialog between government and industry was also stressed as necessary in promoting understanding of factors that drive industry business decisions.

September 21, 2009 According to the September 15 producer price index (PPI) report by the US Labor Department, prices for construction materials rose 1.0% in August after almost one year in decline. Despite the increase, however, construction materials prices are down 7.4% on a year-over-year basis. Materials experiencing increases include softwood lumber (up 10.9%) and nonferrous wire/cable (6.2%). Also, crude energy prices increased 6.9% in August, and the nation's wholesale level increased 1.7%.

September 18, 2009 The ACGIH has dropped metalworking fluids from Notice of Intended Change of Threshold Limit Value (TLV) for mineral oil. ILMA committee has submitted scientific responses to ACGIH annual update letter, for several years, saying that exposure issues associated with metalworking fluids have to do with contaminants generated while they are in use and not highly refined base oils. Also, ILMA believes exposure should be addressed through systems approach rather than single-number exposure limit.
