September 17, 2009 IPC is convening group of leading PCB manufacturers, EMS providers, and OEM companies to develop standard for protection of intellectual property. First meeting of IP standards development group will take place on Friday, October 23, 2009. With both commercial and government sectors' interest in protecting IP through supplier requirements and audits, new standard is expected to educate members and elevate best practices in IP protection.

FDA publishes revisions to list of recognized standards.

September 16, 2009 U.S. FDA has issued new revisions to its list of accepted standards for use in premarket reviews of medical devices. Newly recognized standards include IEC 62366:2007, which helps manufacturers improve usability and safety of medical devices; ANSI/AAMI RD5:2003 (R2008) to ensure effective, safe performance of hemodialysis systems, devices, and related materials; and ASTM F2603-06, Standard Guide for Interpreting Images of Polymeric Tissue Scaffolds.
ISO DIS addresses social responsibility concepts.

September 16, 2009 International Organization for Standardization Working Group on Social Responsibility (ISO SR) announced that ISO 26000, Guidance on social responsibility, is published as a Draft International Standard (DIS). It will help usher organizations toward sustainable global economy by establishing common guidance on social responsibility concepts, definitions, and evaluation methods. National member bodies of ISO are invited to vote and comment on DIS text during 5-month balloting period.

Borlaug, American geneticist and plant pathologist who died Saturday, September 12th in Dallas. In addition to offering condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues, the statement conveyed appreciation for Borlaug's work. Specifically mention was his development of high-yield and disease-resistant wheat varieties as well as the applications of farming practices and methods of increasing food production.

September 16, 2009 The ZigBee Alliance announced that ZigBee RF4CE specification for advanced remote controls is available for public download. It replaces IR with RF communication in remote controls, allowing non-line-of-sight operation with extended range and battery life for consumer electronic remote controls. Announced in March 2009, ZigBee RF4CE is a standardized specification for RF remote controls that removes field-of-vision barriers and opens new capabilities by supporting 2-way communication.

USMTC Report shows rise in technology consumption in July.

September 15, 2009 According to AMT and AMTDA, U.S. manufacturing technology consumption totaled $149.51 million in July, up 9.2% from June but down 55.3% from July 2008. Number of units is less than half of last year's total, according to Peter Borden, but it is 3rd consecutive monthly increase in machine tool sales, which indicates some improvement. Central and Midwest regions of U.S. posted gains in manufacturing technology consumption in July over June totals, other regions posted losses.

September 15, 2009 CAS, a division of American Chemical Society, announced that it has recorded 50 millionth substance in CAS REGISTRY, a compendium of publicly disclosed chemical information. The recently registered substance is a novel arylmethylidene heterocycle with analgesic properties. In addition to chemical names, CAS Registry Number, and vital literature references, REGISTRY provides experimental and predicted property data, commercial availability, preparation details, and regulatory information.
