NIST evaluates iris recognition algorithms.

October 7, 2009 After judging 18 state-of-the-art algorithms from 10 different providers, NIST Iris Exchange Evaluation found VeriEye 2.1 from Neurotechnology to be in top 3 for accuracy as well as the fastest for matching. Testing focused on compressed image recognition and interoperable formats in attempt to provide data standards to support data exchange, storage, and smart card use. Algorithm meets requirements of ANSI INCITS 379-2004 and ISO/IEC 19794-6 standards.

October 7, 2009 Product testing has begun for Wi-Fi CERTIFIED(TM) n program, which updates the 2-year-old Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 802.11n draft 2.0 program by adding testing for some optional features available in Wi-Fi equipment: test support for simultaneous transmission of up to 3 spatial streams, packet aggregation, Space-time Block Coding, and channel coexistence measures. Also, updated logo, taglines, and product labeling matrix will help consumers make informed choices about Wi-Fi products.

October 7, 2009 Launched by Department of Energy, H-Prize Competition is offering $1 million cash award to individual or team that creates most advanced materials for hydrogen storage in vehicles. U.S. Congress authorized H-Prize in Section 654 of Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. In all, Act could provide up to $4 million/year and single $10 million cash prize in public funding over 10-year period for most significant innovations in hydrogen storage, production, utilization, and distribution.

October 7, 2009 Brent Erickson, Executive VP of BIO Industrial and Environmental Section, said proposed USDA Certified Biobased Product voluntary labeling program will help consumers identify biotechnology-based products and spur development of low-carbon goods and materials made from renewable resources. Erickson also said program identifies as many as 2,400 new products from 562 companies as bio-based products eligible for voluntary labeling.

Standard provides total building sustainability package, addressing everything from design and commissioning to plans for high-performance operation.

October 6, 2009 Signed into law on September 30, the Defense Production Act (DPA) reforms and reauthorization (S. 1677) bill was applauded by U.S. manufacturing technology providers. Douglas K. Woods, AMT President, commended bipartisan leadership from Senators Dodd and Shelby as well as the Senate's broad support and swift action. According to Woods, this illustrates recognition that the DPA will be used to help manufacturers hard hit by economic downturn - mostly those with problems accessing credit.
NTSB issues recommendations to FAA.

October 6, 2009 NTSB has recommended FAA revise bird-strike certification requirements for 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 25 airplanes so protection from in-flight impact with birds is consistent across all airframe structures. Recommendations were also made concerning wildlife hazard assessments, operational strategies for minimizing damage due to bird strike, and for flight plans to list operator and set of rules being used. NTSB also reiterated recommendations for testing cockpit voice recorders.

October 6, 2009 Standards developed by ISO addressing safe/effective use of hypodermic needles and syringes, such as in flu vaccines, include ISO 7864:1993, Sterile hypodermic needles for single use. In addition, 4-part ISO 7886 details use of different syringe types. Protective habits are covered in ASTM E2276-03e1, Standard Test Method for Determining the Bacteria-Eliminating Effectiveness of Hygienic Handwash and Handrub Agents Using the Fingerpads of Adult Subjects.

October 6, 2009 ANSI held bilateral meetings with several international counterparts at ISO General Assembly meetings in Cape Town, South Africa. To strengthen standardization ties with international partners, ANSI president and CEO S. Joe Bhatia signed several Memoranda of Understanding aimed at encouraging bilateral relationships, joint business ventures, and information exchange. Results will hopefully stimulate industry-to-industry cooperation, international standardization, and free trade.

October 5, 2009 ASHRAE has proposed addendum 1 to Standard 62.2-2007, Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality in Low-Rise Residential Buildings, which would require CO alarms outside each sleeping area and extend requirements to all homes. Open for public comment until Oct 26, 2009, addendum brings standard closer in line with 2009 International Residential Code. Proposed addendum S, 1 of 9 other addenda open for review, would give credits for different types of residential ventilation systems.

According to Jim Greenwood of BIO, focus will be on addressing root causes of hunger by investing in technologies/infrastructure that will make farming more productive/profitable in developing countries. Greenwood added, by sharing modern agricultural technologies we can help the world feed itself now and in the future, and biotechnology has an important role.

BIO comments on EPA proposed Renewable Fuel Standard rules.

October 2, 2009 Brent Erickson of BIO said EPA's proposed rule and draft regulatory impact analysis yields uncertain estimates of biofuel affects on international land use change. In categorizing biofuel production, EPA should let biofuel producers estimate carbon footprint for plants by using analysis tool that can account for future improvement and innovation. Erickson also warned that failure to effectively use waiver provision and structure RIN allowances correctly will lead to market instability.
