October 19, 2009 Grave concerns were made known regarding October 14 House Energy and Environment Subcommittee approval of H.R. 2868, Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Act. Although a few measures were adopted to move slightly in better direction, approved bill still imposes oppressive and unnecessary mandates on chemical distribution facilities. NACD supports legislation that would give DHS permanent authority to implement CFATS but insists changes to this program, such as IST mandates, are premature.

Event featured nearly 250 members of standards and conformity assessment community, with exhibition, reception, and dinner focused on theme Standards for Environmental Stewardship. Winner of 2009 Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award, Jim Sanford, was announced, as well as winner of World Standards Day Paper Competition, Denis Leonard.

October 19, 2009 More than 82,000 on-line votes have been cast in People's Choice Award competition, part of the 2nd annual America's Transportation Awards, sponsored by AAA, AASHTO, and U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Ten transportation projects are vying for the Grand Prize, which is being determined by independent panel of judges and the People's Choice Award, which is being decided by popular vote. Panel of judges evaluated 50 highway projects in On Time, On Budget, and Innovative Management categories.
Japan joins Green Asia and Pacific aviation partnership.

October 19, 2009 Japan has joined as partner in Asia and Pacific Initiative to Reduce Emissions (ASPIRE), which began in February 2008 and includes FAA, Airservices Australia, and Airways New Zealand. Agreement was signed by FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt and Ryuhei Maeda of JCAB. Goals include identifying and sharing procedures that produce environmental benefits, quantifying green enhancements in region over last decade, and establishing fuel and emissions baselines for current operations.

October 19, 2009 Honoring creativity, dedication, and vision in field of standards and conformity assessment, 2009 annual ANSI Awards Banquet and Ceremony recognized 15 distinguished individuals. June Ling, Gregory Saunders, David L. McQuaid, Scott Jameson, John Rennie, Stephen Oksala, as well as Amanda Dixon and Martha Marrapese were honored. October 19, 2009 In collaboration with Banyan Productions, BIO has created series of educational web videos that answer many basic questions about biotech. BioBytes, hosted by Dr. David Targan, feature topics ranging from biotech therapies, to biofuels and future of biomaterials. Series also includes BioDigests, with true stories of companies, scientists, and entrepreneurs who are driving biotech innovation, and those benefiting from them. Videos can be seen on BIO's social media website.
ANSI accredits Microsoft and IHMM certification programs.

October 19, 2009 Microsoft and Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM) have been granted accreditation under ANSI/ISO/IEC 17024, joining 27 other accredited credentialing bodies under ANSI. Accreditations include Microsoft Certified IT Professional: Enterprise Administrator and Microsoft Certified IT Professional: Server Administrator. Professional accreditations by IHMM include Certified Hazardous Materials Manager and Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner.
NAM Official says CO2 capture project will boost economy.

October 19, 2009 United States intends to have technology for coal-fired power stations to capture and store CO2 emissions ready for commercial deployment within decade, according to U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu. In response to Chu's statement, Keith McCoy of NAM said that building large-scale, near-zero-emissions power plants will support continued economic viability of nation's manufacturing base, create high-wage sustainable jobs, and improve global environment.
FDA Expert to deliver keynote address for online conference.

Market Outlook Report show US sales increase, Canadian decrease.

October 19, 2009 According to August 2009 data released by PTDA, sales for US manufacturers increased by 10.7% in August 2009 compared to July 2009 while those for Canadian manufacturers dropped 6.6%. Year to year sales were down for both countries: 30.6% for US and 23.8% for Canada. Confidence in the Canadian market, measured on 1-10 scale from least to most optimistic, fell by 0.4 from last month to 4.1. US confidence held current negative position of 4.7 for its second consecutive month.

Abstracts of 150 words or less must be submitted by January 11, 2010, and should summarize results and demonstrate technical depth of proposed paper. Symposium will showcase latest development and operational experience with air pollution controls from fossil-fired power plants and examine methods for reducing hazardous air pollutant emissions.
PCB Production Report tells of flat growth in 2008.

October 16, 2009 According to World PCB Production and Laminate Market Report, worldwide production of printed circuit boards was flat in 2008, climbing 1% over 2007 to $50.8 billion. China's share of PCB production continued to grow in 2008 to 31.4% of world production, while most other countries' shares either held steady or declined. Japan is second biggest producer with 22.5%. North American and European PCB production declined slightly, holding 8% and 7% shares, respectively, in 2008.

October 15, 2009 BIO has provided comments to Secretary's Advisory Committee on Genetics, Health and Society regarding its draft report on "Gene Patenting and Licensing and Their Impact on Patient Access to Genetic Tests." Report makes several recommendations that would restrict ability to obtain or undermine enforceability of patents and exclusive licenses with respect to genetic tests. According to BIO, proposed changes would risk U.S. global leadership in research and development and harm patients.
