Panel topics covered cybersecurity, sustainable buildings, and social media. Addressing current standardization issues in the U.S. and abroad, forum provided an opportunity for all voices from the standards community to be heard.
AIM publishes 2D Symbology for high-speed encoding.

October 23, 2009 AIM announced publication of DotCode, a rectangular matrix symbology designed to produce machine-readable coding with existing, in market high-speed industrial printing equipment. DotCode is suited for high-speed industrial ink jet and laser marking because it does not require continuous lines or touching elements. It can be printed in several different rectangular shapes including ribbon-like format, which could be used to encode production batch, lot number, and best-by date on commodities.
Department of Homeland Security to select standards for private sector preparedness.

October 23, 2009 The Federal Emergency Management Agency of DHS has announced intent to select standards for adoption in 9/11 Commission-recommended program intended to improve preparedness for disasters and emergencies in private sector. Three documents have been identified for prospective adoption in Voluntary Private Sector Preparedness Accreditation and Certification Program, which will assess whether private sector entity complies with voluntary preparedness standards adopted by DHS.
NAM Chief Economist sees early signs of economic recovery.

October 23, 2009 NAM Chief Economist, David Huether, made a statement announcing the presence of first economic recovery signs since the deepest drop in production witnessed in the post-WWII era. The Federal Reserve reported manufacturing output increased 1% in September after upwardly revised 1.2% gain in August. While half of September's manufacturing production gain was concentrated in motor vehicle sector, majority of 19 major industries posted production gains for all 3 months in third quarter.

Meetings included discussions on proposed standards and revisions as well as workshops and roundtables. Central European location allowed for participation of several ASTM global members and interested participants.

October 21, 2009 ZigBee® Alliance announced certification of 17 devices from 10 manufacturers using ZigBee Home Automation, which is a standard offering control for home appliances, lighting, environment, energy use, and security. Standard provides path to direct interoperability with other ZigBee public application profiles, including the ZigBee Smart Energy. Products using ZigBee Home Automation are suited for new construction, do-it-yourself, and retrofit markets.

October 21, 2009 ASHRAE president Gordon Holness called President Obama's declaration of October as National Energy Awareness Month "an opportunity for Americans to become more aware of how their everyday choices and actions impact energy use - particularly in their homes and the buildings where they work and play." Holness also offered ASHRAE's standards and new labeling program as resources for achieving the President's goal of energy efficiency.
Proposals Sought for green buildings user manuals.

October 21, 2009 ASHRAE is currently accepting research proposals for development of a user's manual for Standard 189.1P, Standard for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, which defines minimum requirements for high-performance green buildings. User manual proposals are also being sought for Standard 90.1-2010, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, which aims to achieve 30% energy cost savings compared to 2004 standard.

Nominations can be found on commercial vehicles produced in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
BIO commends tax credit proposal for 2009 health care act.

October 20, 2009 Therapeutic Project Tax Credit Amendment in America's Healthy Future Act of 2009 would encourage investments in new breakthrough medical therapies to prevent, diagnose, and treat acute and chronic diseases. Offered by Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), it will support cutting-edge biomedical research. Jim Greenwood of BIO said credit will reimburse small biotechnology companies for portion of therapeutic development activities, including hiring scientists and conducting clinical studies.

October 20, 2009 Small Business Early-Stage Investment Act of 2009 would create funding program at Small Business Administration to stimulate growth in early-stage, technology-based companies. In testimony, Martin Sabarsky of HR BioPetroleum, Inc., said private equity and capital markets are failing to fund promising, early-stage scientific research. Sabarsky added that biotechnology companies have potential to benefit economy, improve public health, and increase nation's energy independence/security.

AASHTO urges fight against worldwide road death epidemic.

October 20, 2009 Tony Kane of AASHTO, John Schafer, and actress Michelle Yeo, spokesperson for Make Roads Safe Campaign for Global Road Safety, met at National Press Club to urge Congress to join fight against worldwide road death epidemic. Kane said deaths on U.S. highways were at record low during first half of 2009, but this represents just part of needed effort. Also, Kane and Kirk Steudle will join U.S. officials on November 19-20 at Moscow Ministerial meeting to address crisis.
