August 1, 2013 Recognizing that national and economic security of the U.S. depends on reliable functioning of critical infrastructure, the President, under Executive Order 13636 "Improving the Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity" directed NIST to work with stakeholders to develop a voluntary framework for reducing cyber risks to critical infrastructure. On July 10–12, 2013, NIST held 3rd Cybersecurity Framework Workshop, hosted by University of California San Diego and the National Health ISAC.
Fraunhofer and UConn develop Center for Energy Innovation.

August 1, 2013 Fraunhofer USA, together with the University of Connecticut, developed the Fraunhofer Center for Energy Innovation to develop advanced technologies related to energy storage, fuel cells, in-stream hydro, power management, and distribution through contract research. Fraunhofer and UConn research will concentrate on modern functional materials, such as metals, ceramics, micro- and nanostructures, as components for fuel cells and electrolyzers.
House Defense Appropriations Bill ignores sequestration.

August 1, 2013 AIA applauds passage of House Defense Appropriations Bill, which provides $512.5 billion in base funding and $85.8 billion for overseas contingency operations. However, while bill is more than $28 billion above levels mandated under Budget Control Act of 2011, it still represents a reduction of nearly $3.4 billion from Defense Department’s 2014 request for its base budget. More importantly, the bill ignores cuts that would be imposed under sequestration.

August 1, 2013 EPA announced academic partners for Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) University Challenge, which aims to find ways to increase public awareness of toxic chemical releases in their communities. Selected projects were proposed by faculty and students from Drew University, Huston-Tillotson University, Indiana University-Bloomington, SUNY Plattsburg, University of California-Los Angeles, University of Washington-Bothell, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, and Washington University in St. Louis.
ATA to host summit on making trucking technology pay off.

July 31, 2013 National Stormwater Calculator will help property owners, developers, landscapers, and urban planners make informed land-use decisions to protect local waterways from pollution caused by stormwater runoff. Desktop application estimates annual amount of stormwater runoff from specific site based on local soil conditions, slope, land cover, and historical rainfall records. Users can select different scenarios to learn how specific green infrastructure changes can prevent pollution.

July 31, 2013 AMT Board of Directors announced that imX – interactive manufacturing eXperience has been cancelled due to scheduling conflicts and inability of key partners to commit staff and product. This event, focused on education and product applications, was to take place in Las Vegas from November 18–20. "Rest assured," said AMT Chairman R. Stephen Flynn, "we will take the industry and its customers' interest in educational events and develop it to its fullest potential in a different timeframe."
San Antonio agrees to upgrade sewer systems.

July 31, 2013 U.S. EPA and Department of Justice announced that the San Antonio Water System has agreed to make significant upgrades to reduce overflows from its sewer system and pay $2.6 million civil penalty to resolve Clean Water Act violations stemming from illegal discharges of raw sewage. To come into compliance with CWA, including remedial measures taken during parties’ negotiations and comprehensive measures required under settlement, SAWS is expected to spend $1.1 billion.

He is also secretary of Subcommittee B07.01 on Aluminum Alloy Ingots and Castings and chairs U.S. TAG National Committee for ISO/TC 79 on Light Metals and Alloys.

NA Robotics Companies Set Records for first half of 2013.

July 31, 2013 According to statistics released from RIA, North American (NA) robotics companies set new sales records through June of 2013. Total of 10,854 robots, valued at $679.3 million, ordered from NA robotics companies in first 6 months represents 1.9% increase in units over same period in 2012. Shipments to NA customers through June totaled 11,308 robots, valued at $715.1 million, breaking first-half records set in 2012 by 11.0% (units) and 10.4% (dollars).

July 30, 2013 Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC), convened by FAA, recommended policy and regulatory changes for improving safety of general aviation aircraft and reducing certification/modification costs. Recommendations covered areas of design, production, maintenance, and safety. Among recommendations was that compliance with Part 23 requirements be performance-based and that industry consensus standards be used to define amendable compliance framework to keep up with evolving technology.

July 29, 2013 ASTM WK41897, Test Method for EMI Transmittance and Shielding Rating for Glazing Infill, will be helpful in selecting glass or glazing that has proper communication transmittance rate for location in which it is being used. Standard will provide test method by which lites or glazings can be evaluated for their transmittance on, or shielding capability to, electromagnetic frequencies, and will help users understand capability and contribution of glazing materials to EMI security systems.

Product Category Rule in combination with Environmental Product Declaration is becoming the means to classify individual products as well as serve as comparison between products. Workshop will focus on the basics of these documents and how they relate to individual raw materials as well as ready-mix concrete.
EPA excludes solvent wipes from hazardous waste regulations.

July 29, 2013 EPA modified hazardous waste management regulations under Resource Conservation and Recovery Act to exclude solvent-contaminated wipes from hazardous waste regulations provided that businesses clean/dispose of them properly. Rule is based on EPA’s final risk analysis that concluded wipes contaminated with certain hazardous solvents do not pose significant risk to human health or environment when managed properly. EPA estimates that final rule will result in net savings of $21.7–27.8 million/year.
