December 14, 2009 Dorothy Coleman, NAM VP of Tax and Economic Policy, stated that while NAM supports initiative to prevent excessive speculation and improve transparency in derivatives market, NAM believes it is important that policymakers preserve ability of responsible companies to access OTC derivatives. By making clear that end-users do not pose systemic risk, Murphy Amendment will exclude end-users from rules and requirements aimed primarily at those whose activities present risk to financial system.
AASHTO Testifies that ARRA is delivering jobs, boosting economy.

December 14, 2009 In testimony on behalf of AASHTO before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Gary Ridley, Oklahoma DOT Secretary, said the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) has been an unequivocal success. He cited Federal Highway Administration reports that found almost 80%, or more than $21 billion, of ARRA funds set aside for transportation projects have gone through federal approval process and are proceeding to construction.

December 14, 2009 According to ASTM member Laura Powers, ASTM C1721, Guide for Petrographic Examination of Dimension Stone, will help guide petrographers who analyze dimension stone in describing, analyzing, and reporting characteristics important to architects/engineers in determining how stone will behave or has behaved in service. Developed by ASTM International Committee C18 on Dimension Stone, ASTM C1721 is currently under jurisdiction of Subcommittee C18.01 on Test Methods.
ASTM is working on standard to specify color.

December 14, 2009 ASTM International Committee E12 on Color and Appearance is working with Scandinavian Colour Institute to develop standard based on Natural Color System® (NCS®). This proposed new standard, WK24817, Practice for Specifying Color by the Natural Color System, is currently under jurisdiction of Subcommittee E12.07 on Color Order Systems. Understanding the NCS system enables users to judge attributes of specific colors as well as communicate and check specifications and identify colors.
Proposed ASTM Standard focuses on fretting fatigue testing.

December 11, 2009 Proposed standard WK24298, Guide for Fretting Fatigue Testing, will aid in establishing tests for fretting fatigue, an issue at attachments and joints in various mechanical, aeronautical, and biomedical engineering systems and devices. It is being developed by Subcommittee E08.05 on Cyclic Deformation and Fatigue Crack Formation and will cover tests for fretting fatigue response. All interested parties are invited to participate in the standard's development.

December 11, 2009 Developed by Subcommittee E07.06, Standard E2700 will provide universal inspection procedure for phased array inspection of welds. E2533 Guide, under jurisdiction of Subcommittee E07.10, describes how established nondestructive testing methods are applied specifically to characterization of polymer matrix aerospace composites. Standard E2663, developed by Subcommittee E07.11, will provide transparent and industry standard data format with which to store digital inspection data.

December 11, 2009 In testimony before House Foreign Affairs Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade Subcommittee, Marion Blakey, AIA President and CEO, stated that nearly half of U.S. aerospace sales are exported and are a foundation for building key relationships and shared security with important international allies and partners. AIA supports a number of provisions to modernize export control system included in H.R. 2410 and is looking forward to working with administration on interagency review.
ATA expects decline in air travelers over winter holiday.

December 11, 2009 ATA announced that it expects 41 million passengers to travel over upcoming winter holidays on U.S. carriers, representing 2.5% year-over-year decline from 42 million passengers estimated to have flown during same period in 2008. Decline continues to be driven by fragile economy and depressed global demand for travel. Three busiest travel days during holiday period are expected to be Dec 27, 28, and 29, respectively, based on sample data from 2008 winter holiday period.
TIA Reveals Complete Schedule for 2010 OTR Conference.

December 11, 2009 TIA announced that the complete 2010 OTR Conference schedule has been posted on their website and reiterated that both the early conference registration deadline, January 13, and hotel registration deadline, January 18, are approaching. Taking place February 17-20 in Tucson, AZ, this 3-day event include sessions on topics including global look at OTR industry, daily safety tips, and succession planning. Other events include mine tour and demonstration by Caterpillar.

December 10, 2009 Developed by Subcommittee F14.50 on High Security Fences and Perimeter Barriers, ASTM F2781, Practice for Testing Forced Entry Resistance of Security Fence Systems, will provide test that allows users to differentiate levels of effectiveness among many types of security fence systems available. Primary factors that define success or failure of attempt to forcibly penetrate security fence systems include tools and devices employed, number of aggressors, and level of sophistication.

December 10, 2009 In testimony, AIA Vice President Cord Sterling said that the US government needs to adopt Organizational Conflict of Interest (OCI) rules that function effectively without forcing unnecessary divestitures in industry. He specified that the "DoD should develop and implement a clear, organization-wide policy that encourages use of systems engineering expertise, while ensuring strict mitigation of OCIs" and went on to stress importance of clear policy and regulatory guidance.
