December 21, 2009 Researchers at Joint Quantum Institute (JQI) created synthetic magnetic fields for ultracold gas atoms. In effect, this tricks neutral atoms into acting as if they are electrically charged particles subjected to real magnetic field. This demonstration opens up possibilities for exploring complex natural phenomena involving charged particles in magnetic fields and may also contribute to new form of quantum computing.
Touchscreen Device may lead to mobile fingerprint ID.

December 18, 2009 NIST compiled requirements and designed software needed by FBI to run on handheld device with index card-sized touchscreen. Researchers Mary Theofanos, Brian Stanton, Yee-Yin Choong, and Ross Micheals brainstormed with FBI Hostage Rescue Team and created solution capable of taking pictures of fingerprints/faces and sending data wirelessly to central hub. Design was scaled to fit 2 x 3 in. screen, and next step is to integrate actual finger print sensor into demo program.

December 18, 2009 On Dec 7, President Barack Obama and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke announced that 5 organizations have been named recipients of 2009 Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award, the nation's highest Presidential honor for innovation and performance excellence. Recipients include Honeywell Federal Manufacturing and Technologies, MidwayUSA, AtlantiCare, and Heartland Health, and VA Cooperative Studies Program Clinical Research Pharmacy Coordinating Center.

December 18, 2009 Special Publication 800-126 Revision 1, The Technical Specification for the Security Content Automation Protocol (SCAP): SCAP Version 1.1, describes changes to SCAP, which incorporates software flaw and security configuration standard reference data from National Vulnerability Database. Publication also adds SCAP to Open Checklist Interactive Language that standardizes manual security checks through questionnaires. Public comment period runs through January 23, 2010.
NIST seeks public comment on cryptography standard document.

December 17, 2009 NIST has released Revised Draft of Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-3 for public comment until March 11, 2010. Document updates federal government's guiding document for testing/validation of cryptographic modules that offer primary line of defense for confidential data on computers. Revision proposes 4 levels of security specified in FIPS 140-2 and adds requirements at higher security levels for mitigating noninvasive attacks.
NIST Technology Program announces research project awards.

December 17, 2009 NIST announced funding for 20 research projects under Technology Innovation Program, which supports innovative, high-risk research in new technologies that address critical national needs. Projects range from unmanned, hovering aircraft for inspecting bridges to high-speed sorting system for recycling aerospace metals to nanomaterials for advanced batteries. Cost-sharing awards represent up to $146 million in new research over next 2-5 years with up to $71 million in funding provided by TIP.
NIST and NTIA plan demonstration communications network.

December 17, 2009 NIST and NTIA have announced plans to create demonstration broadband communications network for emergency services agencies, using part of 700 MHz broadband spectrum. System will provide common demonstration site for manufacturers, carriers, and public safety agencies to test/evaluate advanced broadband communications equipment/software. It is expected to go live in mid-2010. National network could offer public safety groups access to video, mapping, GPS applications, and more.

December 17, 2009 Electronic verification standard and accompanying software developed by electrical engineers at NIST allows process to be automated and performance of calibration system checked with NIST via the Internet. Traceable directly to NIST labs, procedure compares measurements to independent calibration process and authenticates tests both electronically and with printable certificate from NIST that includes serial number of device being calibrated.

December 17, 2009 Association of Pool and Spa Professionals (APSP) and NSF International, members and accredited standards developers of ANSI, jointly agreed to pursue research and testing to advance health and safety in recreational water industry. Via this collaboration, NSF has agreed to provide research and testing services for the development and maintenance of APSP's standards and will also perform general research on prevention of injuries and illnesses related to recreational water activities.

ANSI announces expanded scope of accreditation.

December 16, 2009 In effort to facilitate cross-border trade of telecommunications products between Japan and U.S., ANSI has announced that the scope of its accreditation program for Telecommunications Certification Bodies was expanded to include recognition of telecommunications requirements issued by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. Under this scope expansion, test results and product certification by U.S. TCBs for equipment will be accepted in Japan without need to re-test product.
