Independent Review Panel to examine November FTI outage.

December 10, 2009 FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt announced formation of independent review panel that will examine Nov 19, 2009 outage of FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure. Group of experts will survey FTI's architecture and recommend immediate or future changes to improve reliability. They will also review management of system to ensure the most stringent protocols and safeguards are in place. FTI system operates 24/7 and provides communication support for National Airspace System.
ANSI Board names volunteer leaders for 2010 terms.

December 9, 2009 ANSI Board of Directors announced its members and officers for the term beginning January 1, 2010. This includes Arthur E. Cote, who was re-appointed for a second one-year term as ANSI's chairman of the Board, and 4 vice-chairmen. Newly and re-elected Directors-at-Large were also named for terms beginning January 1, 2010 and ending December 31, 2012. Retiring members were also recognized for their service to the institute.

PTDA October 2009 Report shows slight increase in sales.

December 9, 2009 According to October 2009 PTDA Market Outlook Report, U.S. manufacturers' sales rose 0.6% over September 2009; slower than previous 2 months and down 28.2% compared to October 2008. Canadian manufacturers' sales rose 0.8%, while year-to-year sales are off 27.2%. Confidence in U.S. market has stalled at 4.7 on scale of 1-10 for 4 consecutive months, and negative since January. Canadian manufacturers' confidence spiked in October 2009, jumping to neutral position of 5.0.

According to report by Bio Economic Research Associates, advanced biorefineries could create 29,000 new jobs and $5.5 billion in economic growth over next 3 years.

Proposed Standards cover aspects of fire exposure.

December 8, 2009 Proposed standard ASTM WK23700 will cover test for resistance of roof field vents to flames and burning embers. Practical application of standard is to effectively subject roof field vents, and potentially ridge vents, to real world exposure to wind-driven flames and burning embers under laboratory conditions. Proposed standard ASTM WK25760 will serve as tool in development of fire test methods to evaluate materials for resistance to ignition and spread of fire from building to building.

December 7, 2009 At President Obama's forum on jobs and economic development, Paula Hammond, secretary of transportation for Washington state and chairperson of AASHTO's Climate Change Steering Committee, told President Obama that transportation investments are creating jobs and helping economy recover. Hammond presented results of survey by AASHTO that lists 9,500 ready-to-go transportation projects worth more than $69 billion that, if funded, can be used to create thousands of jobs.

Industrial Controls Index ticks higher during third quarter.

December 7, 2009 Demand for industrial controls increased moderately during third quarter of 2009, with NEMA's Primary Industrial Controls Index rising 1.6% versus April-June period. However, shipments remain low, with index more than 30% below third quarter of 2008. Primary Industrial Controls and Adjustable Speed Drives Index posted 0.9% increase over second quarter of 2009, but also continues to reflect lackluster demand with 29.5% decline on year-over-year basis.
International Tractor Drawbar Standard adopted by ASABE.

December 7, 2009 With deviations, ASABE adopted ISO 6489-3:2004, Agricultural vehicles - Mechanical connections between towed and towing vehicles - Part 3: Tractor drawbar. This document replaces ASAE S482, Drawbars - Agricultural Wheel Tractors, which was used as the basis for ISO 6489-3. The new standard includes modifications to original ISO document and further harmonizes national and international standardization.
NEMA Motor Shipments Index rises in Q3 2009.

December 4, 2009 Motors Shipments Index (MSI) increased 1.7% during Q3 2009. However, it reflected weak demand for motors, which lagged nearly 23% behind year ago level, though inflation- and seasonally-adjusted shipments of fractional horsepower motors increased for 2nd consecutive quarter. Although manufacturing sector conditions have improved, boost from inventory cycle could fade in 2010 until growth is sustained by drivers such as consumer spending, business investment, and export demand.
