ASTM Fatigue Standard will enable fracture toughness testing.

November 18, 2013 ASTM E2899, Test Method for Measurement of Initiation Toughness in Surface Cracks under Tension and Bending, will enable fracture toughness testing on defects that are directly analogous to those commonly found in structural applications. Standard will be used by entities required to address defect tolerance of safety-critical structures, including petroleum plants and pipelines, nuclear reactors, aircraft, and spacecraft.
Workshop to address hydraulic fracturing site characterization.

November 18, 2013 Scheduled for Jan 28, ASTM's workshop on Site Characterization and Monitoring Related to Hydraulic Fracturing Activities will focus on technologies and best practices for conducting site characterizations and monitoring impacts of site activities. Workshop will discuss case studies related to topics such as sampling and analysis of residential/commercial water supply wells; stray gas investigations; measuring atmospheric parameters effecting air quality; and surface/subsurface soil sampling.
NEMA endorses Industry Data Exchange Association.

November 18, 2013 At its annual meeting, NEMA recognized Industry Data Exchange Association's recent milestone accomplishments. IDEA is electrical industry’s preferred source for timely, synchronized manufacturer-supplied product data for electrical products supply channel. During 2013, IDEA dramatically increased the volume of marketing data in its Industry Data Warehouse, which now includes more than 325,000 products, each with manufacturers’ specification sheets, attributes, images, and product descriptions.
Proposed Standard offers test method to determine turbidity.

November 15, 2013 ASTM International Committee D19 on Water has developed ASTM WK4193, Test Method for Determination of Turbidity above 1 TU in the In-Situ Mode. Proposed standard will provide practical guidance into setup, calibration, and verification of a turbidity monitoring system before and after it has been placed in field. In its most basic applications, ASTM WK4193 will be used to measure clarity of streams, lakes, ponds, and other bodies of water to determine if it is safe for different uses.
Shipbuilding Standard offers thermocouple testing guidelines.

November 15, 2013 ASTM WK42858, Practice for Fire Testing, Placement of Thermocouples, will provide guidelines to ensure that appropriate methods of testing are employed for cable penetration configurations that are not fully addressed in the IMO FTP code. Standard will be used by manufacturers of firestop systems as well as test laboratories and regulatory bodies that grant type approvals for materials tested to IMO FTP Code as required for compliance with Safety of Life at Sea regulations.
UAS Integration Plan is step forward for next aviation frontier.

November 15, 2013 AIA lauded FAA's announcement of its "Integration of Civil Unmanned Aircraft Systems in the National Airspace System (NAS)" roadmap. Calling it "a major step forward for realizing the full promise of aviation’s next great frontier," FAA Administrator Michael P. Huerta said "significant progress" is being made toward meeting congressional UAS domestic integration mandate by 2015. Huerta also discussed FAA actions to ensure public privacy concerns in management of 6 upcoming UAS test sites.
BIO supports transparency in biologic substitutions.

November 15, 2013 BIO and Pennsylvania Bio commended Pennsylvania Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee for its approval of Senate Bill 405, which would require pharmacist to notify patient, and within 72 hours, the patient's physician of any biologic product substitution. Bill seeks to properly preserve patient access to accurate prescription information, maintains incentives for innovation, and promotes competitive market for biologic therapies. 
BIO Applauds Representatives for Small Cap Liquidity Reform Act.

November 15, 2013 Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) applauded Representatives Sean Duffy (R-WI) and John Carney (D-DE) for introducing Small Cap Liquidity Reform Act. Building on JOBS Act, said bill increases liquidity for emerging growth companies, including biotech innovators, that trade on public market. BIO's Jim Greenwood said this bill "will allow companies to choose the tick size that best fits their trading needs and stimulate capital formation for breakthrough research."
NREL Working Group releases solar standard contracts.

November 14, 2013 Assembled by NREL, Solar Access to Public Capital (SAPC) working group developed standard contracts that aim to help lower transaction costs and facilitate access to low-cost financing for residential and commercial solar power projects. Contracts cover residential leases and commercial power purchase agreements. Group members recognized customizable contract templates could improve consumer transparency and private-sector investment while lowering cost of solar energy to end-users.
NREL ESIF garners LEEDŽ Platinum designation.

November 14, 2013 Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF), located on campus of U.S. Department of Energy's NREL in Golden, CO, earned LEEDŽ Platinum designation for new construction from U.S. Green Building Council. This 182,500 ft˛ facility is first in USA to help public and private sector researchers scale up promising clean energy technologies and test how they interact with each other and grid at utility scale. ESIF houses >15 experimental laboratories, several outdoor test beds, and HPC data center.
EPA Seeks Public Input on graphic for bug repellent labels.

November 14, 2013 According to Federal Register Notice released by U.S. EPA, public input is being sought on new insect repellent graphic for skin-applied insect repellent product labels. Applied voluntarily by manufacturers, graphic will provide consumers with health information, such as estimated number of hours product will repel potentially harmful insects when used as directed, in prominent and standardized format. Label has been in development for past 4 years by EPA, focus groups, and manufacturers.
