December 2, 2009 Designed to guide automatic safety-related messages sent from vehicles to emergency services, ISO 24978:2009 Standard will help emergency centers to quickly dispatch life-saving staff and equipment to scene of car crash. Standard provides framework in which to operate database of safety-related messages and data concepts, along with standardized set of protocols, parameters, and method of management for updateable data registry.
ASTM Clothing Standard covers flame-resistant rainwear.

December 2, 2009 ASTM F2733, Specification for Flame Resistant Rainwear for Protection Against Flame Hazards, provides minimum requirements for flame-resistant rainwear used by workers exposed to flash fire and other flame hazards. Under jurisdiction of Subcommittee F23.80, it is intended for safety and purchasing personnel and other employees in petrochemical industry. Most rainwear that meets requirements will also protect against hot liquid splash hazards, according to Thomas Neal.

Statement addresses government grants and work that groups are doing to attain building code-related funding from Congress.
National Associations say hydrogen can reduce climate change.

December 2, 2009 Coalition of 16 associations issued joint statement to underscore how hydrogen technologies can help curb global greenhouse gas emissions. Addressed to Executive Secretary of United Nations Framework on Climate Change, statement points out benefits to environment and other areas such as elimination of 80% of emissions from light-duty vehicles. PATH is also participating in Bridge to Hydrogen event, which showcases hydrogen vehicles next to battery electric cars and biofuel vehicles.

PCB Industry Results show decreases in October 2009.

December 1, 2009 IPC's announced October findings from its monthly North American Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Statistical Program. For rigid PCBs and flexible circuits combined, shipments decreased 12.8% from 2008 levels, and orders booked decreased 2.1%. Year to date combined industry shipments were also down 24.4%, along with bookings, which were down 21.5%. Compared to September 2009, combined industry shipments decreased 8.3% and bookings went down 17.4%. Combined industry book-to-bill ratio reached 1.09.
FAA bans takeoffs with polished frost.

December 1, 2009 To increasing safety of winter flying, FAA is prohibiting takeoffs with "polished frost" - frost buffed to make it smooth - on wings, stabilizers, and control surfaces of several classes of aircraft. As alternative to removing frost, operators may consider using wing covers to prevent frost accumulation on wings, wait for frost to melt, store aircraft in heated hangar, or deice wing surface. New rules are effective on January 30, 2010.

November 30, 2009 NIST researchers Elizabeth Strychalski and David Ross, in collaboration with Alyssa Henry of Applied Research Associates, Inc., have developed way to analyze complex mixtures. In New Miniaturized Device for Lab-on-a-Chip Separations, they describe gradient elution moving boundary electrophoresis (GEMBE) technique which, in all test cases, was able to reproducibly separate and quantify specific components from solutions, including potassium, calcium, sodium, magnesium, lithium and melamine.
JQI Researchers create entangled photons from quantum dots.

November 30, 2009 Physicists at Joint Quantum Institute (JQI) developed new source of entangled photons using quantum dots tweaked with laser. JQI's technique may enable more compact and convenient sources of entangled photon pairs than presently available for quantum information applications, such as distribution of quantum keys for encrypting sensitive messages. Glenn Solomon, JQI group leader, said advantages include less bulky nature and ability to produce one pair of entangled photons at a time.
Baldrige Program calls for applicants for 2010 examiners.
