February 10, 2010 Data Privacy Day, on January 28, focused on importance of security and privacy for personal information that is stored or transmitted online. Related ANSI standards cover safety of online financial transactions, public key cryptography, fraud countermeasures and controls, and mathematical primitives for secret value derivation, public key encryption, and digital signatures. Another data privacy initiative is ANSI's Identity Theft Prevention and Identity Management Standards Panel.
BIO proposes second wave of biofuel commercialization policy.

February 10, 2010 BIO released proposed policy options to support U.S. job growth incentivizing commercial scale biorefinery projects for production of advanced biofuels, biobased products, and renewable specialty chemicals. Some options include revising risk assessment process for biofuels projects in DoE loan guarantee program, funding reverse auction for cellulosic biofuels already incorporated in law, and funding development and deployment programs for biobased products and renewable specialty chemicals.
Robot Orders fall 25% in 2009 but show positive signs.

February 10, 2010 According to statistics from RIA, total of 9,451 robots valued at $569.2 million were ordered by North American manufacturing companies in 2009. Unit figures were down 25% and dollars declined 36% when compared to 2008 results. In fourth quarter, decline came to near stop as units were flat with same period in 2008 and dollars were down just 5%. Despite overall declines, life sciences/pharmaceutical/biomedical orders rose 43% in units while food and consumer goods orders rose 7%.

February 10, 2010 ANSI-accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group to subcommittee ISO/TC 122/SC 4, Packaging and Environment, will coordinate U.S. involvement in 7 new standards on how to best utilize packaging resources while maintaining packaging functionality and considering environmental effects. Subcommittee aims to develop this series of ISO standards based on established European Norms and proposed Asian guidelines. Its first meeting was held in December 2009 in Sweden, with 12 U.S. representatives present.

AEM President urges legislation to boost construction jobs.

February 9, 2010 While national unemployment is just below 10%, unemployment in construction equipment industry is more than double national average, says AEM President Dennis Slater. Congressional legislation for multiyear, fully-funded transportation infrastructure program would boost employment in industry, Slater added. Slater also points to Start Us Up USA! Campaign, by AEM and AED, which says that U.S. equipment industry has had loss of 37% of workforce and 40% of economic output since 2006.
ASHRAE receives NIST grant to study IAQ in retail stores.

February 9, 2010 ASHRAE has been awarded $1.5 million to conduct 3-year research project on ventilation and indoor air quality in retail stores. Through study, ASHRAE is seeking to improve energy efficiency of ventilation systems while maintaining air quality by determining relationship between ventilation rates and IAQ, using measured ventilation and pollutant concentration data. Measurements will be conducted in general merchandise, department, supermarket, restaurant, and home improvement/hardware stores.
AASHTO urges Senate to act on highway, transit extension.

February 9, 2010 As Senate negotiates on passage of jobs bill, AASHTO Executive Director, John Horsley joined with 4 other organizations to urge lawmakers to move forward on immediate and long-term extension of highway and transit authorization, as well as additional recovery funding to maintain momentum achieved in job creation through recovery act. Letter says extension will maximize job creation by allowing certainty for state DOTs, contractors, and their workers to plan for full season of work.

FAA seeks public comment on pilot certification.

February 9, 2010 As part of FAA's Call to Action to enhance airline safety following last year's Colgan Air accident in Buffalo, NY, FAA asked for recommendations to improve pilot qualification and training requirements. FAA is pursuing both rule changes and voluntary safety enhancements. One proposed rule, which will enhance airline pilot training programs, received more than 3,000 pages of public comments. Public will have 60 days to comment on basic pilot certification in 4 key areas.
BIO supports government commitment to develop biofuels.

Biofuel production will help mitigate reliance on imported petroleum and reduce carbon emissions associated with climate change.

February 9, 2010 ASTM C1714/C1714M, Specification for Preblended Dry Mortar Mix for Unit Masonry, is under jurisdiction of Subcommittee C12.03 on Specifications for Mortars. Standard's components address traceability of mortar mix ingredients, ingredient blending consistency, testing frequency, allowance of additives based on performance, and dryness of ingredients. It also provides guidance on use of admixtures specific to preblended dry mortar and not included in ASTM C270 or ASTM C1384.
