AASHTO commends House approval of jobs bill.

December 22, 2009 House of Representatives approved Jobs for Main Street Act of 2010, which redirects $75 billion from Wall Street to Main Street. This includes $37 billion for transportation projects, $27.5 billion for highway infrastructure projects, and $8.4 billion for public transportation. John Horsley, AASHTO executive director, said passing bill that funds infrastructure projects will continue momentum created by recovery act. Bill is awaiting Senate approval.
ASTM proposes standard for recirculating hood systems.

December 22, 2009 Proposed standard WK25126, Specification for Recirculating Hood System for Cooking Appliances, is being developed by ASTM Subcommittee F26.07 on Commercial Kitchen Ventilation. Users will include U.S. Department of Defense, architects, mechanical engineers, and food service consultants who design commercial kitchens. It was inspired by Department of Defense representatives' requests for standard for consistent design/performance of ventilation equipment in military commissaries.

It is also working on WK25601, Specification for Tin-Coated Braid and Ribbon Flat Copper Wire Intended for Use in Electronic Application. All will address bare conductor requirements and quality test/inspection criteria for each element.

November PPI Report reflects rise in material prices.

December 22, 2009 Producer price index (PPI) report by U.S. Labor Department shows that price of construction materials/supplies rose 0.6% in November, though it is 2.3% below levels from one year ago. According to Anirban Basu, PPI for construction industries has come to reflect growing economic recovery. Stakeholders hoped materials prices would continue to decline, and rising prices could delay non-residential construction segment's recovery, Basu added.
AIIM Report finds 51% of scanned documents are already digital.

December 22, 2009 Based on 850 responses, Document Scanning and Capture: local, central, outsource - what's working best?, average of 51% of paper documents scanned by user organizations have been output directly from a computer application with no further additions. It also found that 25% of scanned documents are photocopied, and that only 31% are destroyed, after scanning. Report indicates move back to centralized scanning operations along with greater investment in data and document capture/recognition software.

Standard combines information previously part of standards A82/A82M, A185/A185M, A497/A497M, and A496/A496M.
ASTM to develop unmanned aircraft standards.

December 21, 2009 FAA has selected ASTM International to develop small unmanned aircraft system (sUAS) standards intended to support new FAA regulations. ASTM Committee F38 on Unmanned Aircraft Systems will work with FAA's Unmanned Aircraft Office to develop standards that will provide first step in gaining National Airspace System access for sUAS - primarily focusing on commercial applications. To begin effort, committee will hold meeting in Arlington, VA, on February 17-18, 2010.
