Conditional Commitment Made for Hawaii wind power project.

March 23, 2010 U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu announced that Department of Energy offered conditional commitment on $117 million loan guarantee to finance construction and start-up of 30 MW wind energy project - twelve 2.5 MW wind turbine generators and battery energy storage system - in Kahuku, HI. According to Chu, "This investment will create jobs and cut our dependence on oil, while promoting America's leadership in the global race for the clean energy industries of tomorrow."

March 23, 2010 Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced conditional commitments for more than $1.37 billion in loan guarantees under American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to BrightSource Energy, Inc. to support construction and start-up of 3 utility-scale concentrated solar power plants. New plants will generate approximately 400 MW of electricity using company's innovative, proprietary technology. This would nearly double existing generation capacity of this type of renewable energy in U.S.

March 23, 2010 Antibiotic Resistant Enterococci and Staphylococci Isolated from Flies Collected Near Confined Poultry Feeding Operations shows houseflies collected near broiler poultry operations may contribute to spread of drug-resistant bacteria over large distances. Study, conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, was written by lead author and professor Ellen Silbergeld, PhD. It is published in January 2009 issue of Science of the Total Environment.
Conservation Groups urge revised LA coastal restoration plan.

March 23, 2010 In statement to LA Office of Coastal Protection and Restoration, Environmental Defense Fund and others said office should amend its Fiscal Year 2011 draft plan for coastal restoration and hurricane protection. Draft plan lacks details on programs that can reduce risk in near term. Groups said state should identify funding sources, including unused disaster recovery funds, and specific projects for cost-effective, community-based programs that can reduce hurricane risk for residents.
AWEA announces release of NE wind integration study.

March 23, 2010 Wind integration study, funded by National Renewable Energy Laboratory, found that NE and other states in Southwest Power Pool region can obtain 40% of electricity from wind energy, while achieving major carbon emissions reductions. It found CO2 emissions dropped by over 25 million tons/yr in moving from 10% to 40% wind power scenario. According to Rob Gramlich of AWEA, large amounts of wind energy can be reliably integrated onto grid at low cost.

March 23, 2010 Wind energy industry executives called on Congress to pass strong national Renewable Electricity Standard (RES) as best way to save and create U.S. jobs. As CEO of American Wind Energy Association, Denise Bode said there is potential for growth if long term support can be garnered. She also said that resulting national RES will enable new installations as well as new manufacturing. Industry representatives will hold 70+ meetings with lawmakers to urge passage of RES.
