EPA revises fuel economy label estimates for 2013 Ford C-Max.

August 21, 2013 As part of U.S. EPA's commitment to ensuring consumers are given accurate fuel economy values, agency is revising estimates for the 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid. EPA tested the C-Max after receiving consumer complaints that the vehicle did not achieve label values of 47 mpg for highway, city, and combined driving. New fuel economy estimates for Ford 2013 C-Max are 43 mpg combined, 45 mpg city, and 40 mpg highway. Ford is voluntarily re-labeling the vehicles with these new values.
NEMA publishes guide for carbon monoxide alarms.

August 21, 2013 NEMA has published NEMA SB 7-2013 Applications Guide for Carbon Monoxide Alarms and Detectors. This standard has been updated to reflect changes in 2012 edition of NFPA 720 Standard for the Installation of Carbon Monoxide Detection and Warning Equipment. SB 7 is relevant to those involved in the life safety industry as it provides information on the application of CO alarms and detectors.
U.S. Construction Machinery Exports down 21% at midyear.

August 21, 2013 According to AEM, U.S. construction machinery exports dropped 21% during first half of 2013, with $10.8 billion shipped to global markets compared to $13.7 billion at midyear 2012. Exports to Europe declined 20% for total of $1.4 billion, and dropped 15% to Canada for total of $3.7 billion. Exports to Asia decreased 24% to $1.2 billion. While exports to Central America gained 15% to $1.2 billion, exports to South America dropped 13% to $1.9 billion.
Construction Materials Prices remain flat in July 2013.

August 20, 2013 According to Producer Price Index, construction materials prices were unchanged in July but up 2% year over year. Nonresidential construction materials prices were down 0.1% for month and 1.8% higher than one year ago. In comment, ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu noted how price declines in certain categories "help explain the flat overall PPI number for the month, but do not change the fact that materials prices remain more volatile than they might appear at first glance."
AMT and USCTI to release U.S. cutting tool market report.

August 20, 2013 AMT has partnered with United States Cutting Tool Institute to produce monthly summary of the market for cutting tools, a key consumable used with machine tools to turn raw materials into intermediate and finished goods. The two organizations each collect monthly statistics on cutting tool manufacturers’ shipments and have combined their overall sales figures into the Cutting Tool Market Report, which debuted August 14 and will be released on second Wednesday of each month.
ASTM Committee approves 2 low energy air (airsoft) gun standards.

August 20, 2013 Subcommittee F08.27 developed ASTM F2940, Practice for Airsoft Field Operation, and ASTM F2941, Practice for Airsoft Play Safety Briefing. While F2940 provides best practices for field layout, player equipment requirements, minimum engagement distances, chronograph procedures, and other key elements of field operation, F2941 includes guidelines for pre-activity safety briefing necessary for educating players on proper conduct, safe engagement distances, and other considerations.
Solvent Rub Standard has been approved by ASTM committee.

August 20, 2013 ASTM D7835, Test Method for Determining the Solvent Resistance of an Organic Coating Using a Mechanical Rubbing Machine, was developed by Subcommittee D01.53 on Coil Coated Metal. It describes solvent rub technique that can be used in laboratory, field, or fabrication shop for assessing solvent resistance of organic coating that chemically/physically changes during curing process. D01 member Ted Best said use of this standard would not be limited to coil coating industry.
Pesticide Labels will protect bees and other pollinators.

August 20, 2013 In effort to protect bees and other pollinators, EPA has developed pesticide labels that prohibit use of some neonicotinoid pesticide products where bees are present. New labels will have bee advisory box and icon with information on routes of exposure and spray drift precautions. Announcement affects products containing the neonicotinoids imidacloprid, dinotefuran, clothianidin, and thiamethoxam. EPA will work with pesticide manufacturers to change labels so that they meet FIFRA standard.

August 20, 2013 North American Die Casting Association (NADCA) secured 2-year contract with The Franklin Partnership (TFP) to represent die casting industry in its Government Affair activities. According to NADCA president Daniel Twarog, this partnership will provide "in-depth support to make our voices heard before Congress and key federal lawmakers." Twarog also stressed the importance of reminding lawmakers of the critical importance of manufacturers to U.S. economic growth.

Emerging Technology Panel meets twice per year to discuss major challenges faced by utility and commercial customers to identify future directions that will be beneficial to the industry and consumers. In coordination with ETP, NEMA’s Strategic Initiatives program tackles technical and policy hurdles necessary to implement ETP’s vision.
Manufacturing Technology Orders down in June.

August 16, 2013 According to AMT, June U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $426.83 million. This total, as reported by companies participating in the USMTO program, was down 5.8% from May and down 5.7% when compared with total of $452.75 million reported for June 2012. With year-to-date total of $2,538.55 million, 2013 is down 5.7% compared with 2012.
NREL Scientists find asymmetry in topological insulators.

August 16, 2013 National Renewable Energy Laboratory scientists contributed first-principles calculations and co-authored "Mapping the Orbital Wavefunction of the Surface States in 3-D Topological Insulators" paper. Research shows class of materials being looked at for next gen computers behaves asymmetrically at sub-atomic level. This promotes understanding of topological insulators that may have potential to be building blocks of quantum computers that could run on almost no electricity.
Silke Pflueger to Address Direct Diodes at LME 2013 event.

NREL collaborates with Colombian oil firm.

August 14, 2013 NREL is working with Ecopetrol, the largest oil company in Colombia, to process the residue from sugar cane and palm oil harvesting into fuel ethanol for blending with gasoline. Cooperative Research and Development Agreement between NREL and Ecopetrol aims to optimize conversion process for bagasse and to analyze economic case for commercial production of biofuel from these materials. It will also include some limited study on palm rachis — the material left over after palm oil production.
