Iron Castings Committee elects William LeVan as chairman.

April 13, 2010 ASTM International Committee A04 on Iron Castings has elected William LeVan, EVP of the Cast Iron Soil Pipe Institute in Atlanta, as its new chairman. The 140-member committee is responsible for approximately 50 standards published in the Annual Book of ASTM Standards. A graduate of the University of Tennessee, LeVan spent nearly 20 years as regional sales manager at U.S. Pipe and Foundry Co. LeVan also leads Subcommittees A04.12 on Pipes and Tubes and A04.94 on Long Range Planning.
Electroindustrty Firms Report improved business conditions.

April 13, 2010 According to electrical equipment manufacturers polled in NEMA's business confidence survey, business environment has improved since December 2009. Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American conditions rose in March 2010 for its third straight month, increasing 7.2 points to 71.7. This may prove small in absolute terms, as average intensity of change in business conditions reported in survey held steady in March at +0.5 on 0 to +5 range.
EPA Administrator announces $2 million in job training funds.

April 13, 2010 U.S. EPA is awarding more than $2 million in job training grants for environmental cleanups in communities across the country. Agency's Brownfields Job Training Program helps train people for jobs in assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment of brownfields properties, including abandoned gas stations, old textile mills, closed smelters, and other abandoned industrial and commercial properties. These investments target under-served and economically disadvantaged neighborhoods.
BIO announces Business Forum company presentations.

Presentations will provide insight to stories, pipelines, and partnering objectives of participating domestic and international companies in 35 therapeutic and industry tracks, including leading biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, oncology, cardiology, CNS/neurology, diagnostics, gene/cell therapy, infectious diseases, and immunology.

It signifies that machine on which decal is applied should be operated only by personnel who have received employer certification of training and evaluation according to relevant OSHA standards. Decal exemplifies importance and commitment AEM manufacturers place on properly trained operators in control of their products.
Field Pyranometers Standard being developed by ASTM committee.

April 13, 2010 Proposed ASTM standard - ASTM WK27263, Test Method for Indoor Transfer of Calibration from Reference to Field Pyranometers - addresses issues associated with intercalibration of different makes and models of radiometry instrumentation. Being developed by Subcommittee G03.09 on Radiometry, proposed standard will be useful to users of radiometers involved in outdoor weathering and solar conversion system performance monitoring who are not able to maintain calibration capability.

Small Business receives major NextGen engineering contract.

April 13, 2010 FAA announced CSSI, Inc. has won contract to perform engineering work that will help transform and modernize US airspace system into Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). This $280 million contract is first of up to 6 that will be awarded under umbrella portfolio called System Engineering 2020 (SE-2020), which has ceiling of $7 billion. Small businesses will serve as prime contractor for 2 awards, and all contracts are designed to have small business participation.
ASTM names Mark Nelson chair of Committee F10.

April 13, 2010 Mark Nelson, Director of Commodities at Kansas Farm Bureau in Manhattan, Kan., has been named as Chairman of ASTM International Committee F10 on Livestock, Meat, and Poultry Evaluation Systems. Nelson has been member of ASTM International since 2003, serves on five of F10's eight subcommittees, and is Vice Chair of Subcommittee F10.50 on Terminology. After graduating Kansas State University, he worked there as NW area economist and began working at Kansas Farm Bureau in 1997.

April 12, 2010 ASTM standard F1359 is intended for fire and HAZMAT personnel that encounter chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear situations for extended periods, while proposed standard ASTM WK25965, Test Method for Liquid Threat Sprayed on a Mannequin will cover specific needs of law enforcement officers who have limited exposure. By limiting level of liquid penetration resistance needed for law enforcement ensemble, over-engineering can be avoided.

NTSB releases 2009 aviation accident statistics.

April 12, 2010 According to NTSB, total number of U.S. civil aviation accidents decreased from 1,658 in 2008 to 1,551 in 2009 with total fatalities decreasing from 566 to 534. General aviation accidents also decreased in 2009, from 1,566 to 1,474 with total fatalities down from 494 to 474. Last year, one fatal accident occurred involving scheduled Part 121 operator, and on-demand Part 135 operations reported 47 accidents, down from 58 in 2008.
