NTSB releases 2009 aviation accident statistics.

April 12, 2010 According to NTSB, total number of U.S. civil aviation accidents decreased from 1,658 in 2008 to 1,551 in 2009 with total fatalities decreasing from 566 to 534. General aviation accidents also decreased in 2009, from 1,566 to 1,474 with total fatalities down from 494 to 474. Last year, one fatal accident occurred involving scheduled Part 121 operator, and on-demand Part 135 operations reported 47 accidents, down from 58 in 2008.

Commenting, BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood said "we have been spared the imposition of retaliatory measures on a number of products including pharmaceuticals and agricultural seeds."

April 9, 2010 EPA announced it expects more than 125,000 renovation and remodeling contractors to be trained in lead-safe work practices by April 22, which is the effective date for Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule that requires such training. So far, EPA has certified 190 training providers who have conducted over 4,900 courses. To expedite training and certification progress, EPA initiated print and radio campaigns to highlight benefits of hiring lead-safe certified firms.

AASHTO, 26 Other Groups urge support of Highway Trust Fund.

April 9, 2010 AASHTO and 26 other groups joined in letter to Senators John Kerry, Lindsey Graham, and Joseph Lieberman, who are negotiating legislation that may include carbon tax on gasoline that could be passed on to drivers. One proposal would funnel revenue generated by tax into clean-energy research or subsidies for hybrid cars. According to letter, new fees placed on transportation fuels should be dedicated to Highway Trust Fund to improve nation's highways and public transportation systems.

April 9, 2010 Research supported by ASHRAE indicates that non-chemical devices (NCD) marketed to control growth of biological agents may not materially reduce biological growth. Research project No. 1361, Biological Control in Cooling Towers Using Non-Chemical Water Treatment Devices, evaluated 5 non-chemical devices using different technologies to control biological activity in model cooling-tower system. None measurably reduced planktonic or sessile microbial populations.

April 9, 2010 International arbitration panel ruled in favor of Chevron in claim of company against government of Ecuador under U.S.-Ecuador Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT). Ruling emphasizes importance of U.S. BIT program as way to ensure U.S. investors are treated fairly in partner countries, according to Frank Vargo of NAM. Vargo also said foreign competitors have advantages like access to international arbitration, and program will level playing field in foreign markets for American companies.
