January 9, 2014 Consumer Electronics Association, owner and producer of the International CES®, is donating funds to University of Nevada, Las Vegas’s DesertSol solar house, and to the Springs Preserve toward the DesertSol project. This donation is to congratulate the UNLV DesertSol team on their success and to help further the project. DesertSol will be transported to the Springs Preserve where it will act as a living classroom for the next year, reporting data back to UNLV students and faculty.

January 9, 2014 Dr. Ben Kroposki, director of Energy Systems Integration at NREL, has been named an IEEE Fellow, recognized for his leadership in renewable and distributed energy systems integration in the electric power sector. Kroposki conducted original research that led to several IEEE standards in photovoltaic performance and reliability. He also led several efforts with IEEE interconnection standards and chaired IEEE 1547.4, which was the first international standard on microgrids.
Shanghai, China to host ASTM Declarable Substances meeting.

January 8, 2014 ASTM Committee F40 on Declarable Substances in Materials will hold its next business meetings in People’s Republic of China from March 10–13, 2014. Along with 20–25 international technical committee experts representing global manufacturers of products that incorporate identified hazardous materials restricted by legislation, participants will include representatives from 15 nations taking part in Committee F40, with Chinese membership leading the number of international participants.
ASTM Standard measures particle size of metal powders.

January 8, 2014 Recent changes in technology are covered in ASTM B330, Test Methods for Estimating Average Particle Size of Metal Powders and Related Compounds Using Air Permeability. Metal powders tested by ASTM B330 are used in large and small precision parts in the automotive industry, as well as in various types of machinery and lighting products. New instrument referred to in standard is more precise, using sensitive pressure transducers instead of eyeball-estimated water column height to measure pressure.
CEA announces iBeacon scavenger hunt at International CES.

January 7, 2014 During 2014 International CES®, attendees who download CES Mobile App on iOS or Android devices will be encouraged to explore all areas of show through promotional iBeacon-based scavenger hunt and collect badges for each iBeacon they encounter. First three verified players who collect all available badges will be rewarded with special prize from CES. iBeacons are short range, Bluetooth transmitters that can notify mobile devices when they come within 100 ft of beacon.
ASTM International names Robert J. Ebelhar vice chairman.

January 7, 2014 Ronald J. Ebelhar, P.E., D.GE, a senior principal at Terracon in Cincinnati, OH, has been elected to serve 1-year term as vice chairman of the board of directors. Ebelhar, who joined ASTM International in 1980, is chairman of Committee D18 on Soil and Rock, as well as ASTM fellow and 2003 Award of Merit recipient. In addition to his ASTM work, Ebelhar is a fellow and member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a Diplomate, Geotechnical Engineering, in the Academy of Geo-Professionals.

ASTM International member since 1982, Schwartz currently serves on Committee E06 on Performance of Buildings as well as C14 on Glass and Glass Products and E58 on Forensic Engineering. His work outside ASTM includes positions as construction industry arbitrator for American Arbitration Association and technical editor for Glass Digest.
NREL Finds Cellulose Digestion Mechanism by fast-eating enzyme.

January 7, 2014 NREL researchers discovered enzyme from microorganism can digest cellulose at almost twice rate of currently available component cellulase enzyme. Paper reporting this finding, "Revealing Nature's Cellulase Diversity: The Digestion Mechanism of Caldicellulosiruptor bescii CelA," appears in Science. Enzyme could help drive down price of making lignocellulosic fuels, from ethanol to other biofuels, that can be dropped into existing infrastructure.
EPA proposes updates to standards for woodstoves and heaters.

January 7, 2014 EPA is proposing standards for amount of air pollution that can be emitted by new woodstoves and heaters, beginning in 2015. Proposal would make next generation of stoves and heaters an estimated 80% cleaner than those manufactured today, leading to important air quality and public health improvements in communities across the country. Proposal would affect wood heaters manufactured beginning in 2015 and will not affect units already in use or currently for sale today.
EPA Rule incorporates ASTM site assessment standard.

January 6, 2014 EPA published final rule that incorporates latest version of ASTM E1527-13, Practice for Environmental Site Assessments: Phase I Environmental Site Assessment Process, in the performance of all appropriate inquiries when conducting environmental site assessments. E1527 describes Phase I ESA process, which is used to identify potential for releases of hazardous substances or petroleum products that could lead to liability to new property owners if not identified, evaluated, addressed, and managed.

January 6, 2014 Technical standards contributing to technology behind radon mitigation include two approved by ASTM International Committee E06 on Performance of Buildings. Said standards are ASTM E1465, Practice for Radon Control Options for the Design and Construction of New Low-Rise Residential Buildings, (originally approved in 1992) and ASTM E2121, Practice for Installing Radon Mitigation Systems in Existing Low-Rise Residential Buildings, (first approved in 2001).

According to AIA, this announcement will facilitate research, development, and collection of performance data necessary for eventual UAS integration into National Airspace System. AIA also claimed this announcement is one more step towards realizing full potential benefits of UAS.
New Test Facility to improve wind turbines.

January 3, 2014 NREL has added a 5 MW Dynamometer Test Facility at its National Wind Technology Center, dramatically expanding capability of engineers and their industry partners to verify performance and reliability of wind turbine drivetrain prototypes and commercial machines. Facility is capable of testing drivetrains up to 5 MW and employs dynamically variable loading capabilities that will allow researchers to better simulate conditions turbine might experience in the field.
FAA Selects Research and Test Sites for unmanned aircraft systems.

January 2, 2014 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) selected 6 public entities that will develop unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) research and test sites around USA. Selection took into account such factors as geography, climate, location of ground infrastructure, research needs, airspace use, safety, aviation experience, and risk. Sites include University of Alaska, State of Nevada, Griffiss International Airport (NY), North Dakota Department of Commerce, Texas A&M University, and Virginia Tech.
Metal Recycler required to invest in company-wide protections.

December 31, 2013 AL Solutions, a West Virginia-based metal recycler, has agreed to implement extensive, company-wide safeguards to prevent future accidental releases of hazardous chemicals from its facilities, resolving alleged Clean Air Act violations stemming from an explosion at the company’s New Cumberland facility that killed 3 people. Among other requirements, company must use advanced monitoring technology, including hydrogen monitoring and IR cameras, to assess hazardous chemical storage areas.
Proposed Standard addresses oil/gas wastewater transfer pipe.

December 30, 2013 ASTM WK44033, Specification for Fluid Composite Transfer Pipe and Fittings, will cover requirements and test methods for a new type of pipe used for general water transport at industrial, mining, and oil/gas field applications for well-site transmission of influent, fracking flowback, and wastewater, at up to 250 psi working pressures. Once approved, it will be used or referenced by federal and state regulatory agencies to maintain high quality, leak-free pipe installations.
Energy Company to pay $3.2 million civil penalty.

December 30, 2013 Chesapeake Appalachia, LLC, a subsidiary of Chesapeake Energy, will spend EPA-estimated $6.5 million to restore 27 sites damaged by unauthorized discharges of fill material into streams and wetlands and to implement plan to comply with federal and state water protection laws at company’s natural gas extraction sites in West Virginia, many of which involve hydraulic fracturing. Company will also pay civil penalty of $3.2 million for violations of the Clean Water Act, under Section 404 program.
