NHA announces winners of Hydrogen Student Design Contest..

May 6, 2010 NHA announced that team from Missouri University of Science and Technology was declared Grand Prize winner, while teams from University of Waterloo and National University of Kyiv received Honorable Mention awards. For 2010 Contest, students were challenged to plan and design basic elements of hydrogen community. They were asked to design one scalable hydrogen fueling station; identify renewable hydrogen sources in community; and identify customers for early market hydrogen applications.
EPA Seeks Small Business Input on standards revesions..

May 6, 2010 US EPA invites small businesses to nominate representatives to participate in Small Business Advocacy Review Panel as agency develops fine particle emission limits for residential wood heaters and other burning devices. In the past, EPA selected panel members in consultation with US Small Business Administration (SBA) but did not invite small businesses to nominate representatives. EPA and SBA are now, however, seeking nominations directly from small businesses. Deadline is May 14.
BIO aims to increase access to medicines in developing world.

May 6, 2010 According to BIO President and CEO, BIO's Policy Statement on Options for Increasing Access to Medicines in the Developing World is the first time industry has come together to identify viable options that individual companies should consider as they develop and market their products worldwide. BIO encourages all members and other biopharmaceutical companies to review options outlined in Policy Statement and consider how they as individual companies can contribute to this effort.

May 5, 2010 According to Battelle/BIO State Bioscience Initiatives 2010, U.S. bioscience industry, on the whole, experienced continued employment gains through 2008 - first year of recent economic downturn. Study contains most recent data available and shows publicly traded bioscience-related companies generated positive net growth through 2009. Specifically, U.S. employment in bioscience sector reached 1.42 million in 2008, which represents gain of 19,000 bioscience industry jobs in U.S. since 2007.

EPA proposes plans for coal ash regulation..

May 5, 2010 EPA is proposing first-ever national rules for safe disposal and management of coal ash from coal-fired power plants. New rules enforce protective controls, such as liners and groundwater monitoring, at landfills, and liners/oversight of structural integrity at impoundments to protect against contaminants hazardous to human health. Proposal also calls for public comment on 2 approaches for addressing risks of coal ash management under Resource Recovery and Conservation Act.
New FAA Aircraft Tracking System is implemented in Juneau..

May 5, 2010 FAA has implemented Wide-Area Augmentation System (WAM) that allows air traffic controllers to track aircraft along mountainous approach to Juneau, AK. System enables controllers to decrease separation between planes to 5 nautical miles. Utilizing network of sensors that uses signals to detect aircraft transponders, system displays locations of planes onscreen. It will serve as backup in event of GPS outage when Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast is deployed nationwide in 2013.
ANSI Medal honors contributions to conformity assessment.

May 5, 2010 ANSI has announced that a medal has been added to Institute's annual Leadership and Service Awards. Gerald H. Ritterbusch Conformity Assessment Medal honors distinguished service in promoting understanding and application of conformity assessment methods as means of providing confidence in standards compliance for the marketplace. Award was established in honor of Gerald H. Ritterbusch, retired director of standards and regulations at Caterpillar and former chairman of ISO TC 127.

May 5, 2010 Battelle/BIO State Bioscience Initiatives 2010 shows that U.S. employment in bioscience sector reached 1.42 million in 2008. Average bioscience job paid $77,595 in 2008, while each one generated additional 5.8 jobs in national economy. According to report, rapid growth was fueled mainly by research, testing, and medical laboratories. States continue to implement policies/programs to support bioscience development despite facing challenging fiscal conditions.

Award recognizes effort both John Spengler and George Buckley have made in engaging students and shaping current thinking on environmental matters. Dr. Spengler also serves as Akira Yamaguchi Professor of Environmental Health and Human Habitation within Department of Environmental Health at Harvard School of Public Health.
