(NACME) announced NACME/SME-EF Scholarship Program, which awards one student $5,000 each year for 2 years toward cost of engineering education. Created to reward academic excellence, scholarship aims to promote achievement in engineering/technical discipline. Eligibility requires applicants be Junior or Senior-level African American, Latino/a, or American Indian and have 3.4/4.0 GPA.
ANSI Members sign agreement to synchronize plumbing standards.

March 31, 2010 ASME, ASSE, and CSA have signed agreement to harmonize plumbing products standards which address automatic compensating valves, antisiphon fill valves, trap seal primers, pressurized flushing devices, and water temperature limiting devices. First standard to be addressed will cover automatic compensating valves for individual showers and tub/shower combinations. Goal is to assist U.S./Canadian manufacturers by eliminating need to rewrite standards for same products in different countries.
ISO Standard guides symbol selection for medical device labels.

March 31, 2010 ISO has announced ISO 15223-2:2010, Medical devices - Symbols to be used with medical device labels, labeling, and information to be supplied - Part 2: Symbol development, selection, and validation. It includes methods for validating proposed symbols for ANSI/AAMI/ISO 15223-1, and offers systematic methodology for their development/presentation. Detailed processes to reduce chances of misinterpretation of symbols are also included. Standard was originally developed by ISO TC 210 in 2007.
Stratasys Inc. consigns production system for NCDMM lab.

March 31, 2010 NCDMM announced that its Alliance Partner, Stratasys Inc., has agreed to consign a FORTUS 400 mc(TM) 3D Production System for use in NCDMM Advanced Manufacturing Lab located at its corporate headquarters. NCDMM will utilize this equipment to provide manufacturing solutions to Department of Defense and its industrial base. FORTUS 400mc(TM) uses Fused Deposition Modeling technology to manufacture parts direct from CAD file, with layer by layer additive process.

January 2010 Market Outlook Report depicts sales increase.

March 31, 2010 According to sales data released by PTDA's Market Outlook Report, US and Canadian manufacturers' sales increased in January by 0.1% and 10.4% respectively. For US manufacturers, sales comparisons between January 2010 and January 2009 still reflect sales declines, and year-to-date sales are down 12.8% compared to sales at same time last year. However, Canadian manufacturers' year-to-year sales are up 2.9%. Also, manufacturer confidence rose to 5.0 (US) and 4.5 (Canada).
Roger Beachy to speak at climate change Leadership Summit.

ASTM approves polymer reinforced materials standard.

March 31, 2010 Subcommittee D30.05 on Structural Test Methods has completed development of ASTM D7565/D7565M, Test Method for Determining Tensile Properties of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Matrix Composites Used for Strengthening of Civil Structures. Standard provides instructions on fabricating specimens and calculating test results as these materials are applied and cure in field. Primary users will be material suppliers, contractors who are applying composite materials, and quality control laboratories.
Implant Package Labeling Standard to benefit surgeons, patients.

March 31, 2010 Proposed standard ASTM WK27458, Guide for Presentation of End-User Information on Implant Package Labeling, is intended to create uniform labeling system for implant manufacturers. Addressing highly variable labeling within orthopedic implant industry, standard will provide instructions for uniform subset of implant label that, consistently and with easy readability, presents necessary information to device end-users. This information will also ensure proper implant/patient matchup.

March 31, 2010 DoD publication, "Report on Trusted Defense Systems in Response to National Defense Authorization Act, Section 254," recognizes critical role of domestic manufacturing of electronic interconnect hardware and technology as well as need to focus on their security. In January, U.S. Commerce Department released "Defense Industrial Base Assessment: Counterfeit Electronics," which marked increasing infiltration of counterfeit/defective electronics and their effect on weapon system reliability.
ASTM Subcommittee to address alkali aggregate reactions.

March 31, 2010 Members of ASTM Committees C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates and C01 on Cement, as well as other interested parties, are invited to join Subcommittee C09.50 on Risk Management for Alkali Aggregate Reactions, which will develop standards on mitigation of deleterious alkali-aggregate reactions in concrete. To initiate launch of C09.50, workshop will be held June 6, which will cover effectiveness of current alkali-silica reaction specifications and how they might be improved.

March 30, 2010 Developed by Subcommittee E08.05 on Cyclic Deformation and Fatigue Crack Formation, ASTM E2714, Test Method for Creep-Fatigue Testing, will aid in life assessments for aging power plants. Test results from this standard can - according to Ashok Saxena, Ph.D. - be used to assess suitability of materials for demanding applications in which safety is of primary concern. Primary users will include manufacturers and operators of equipment that runs at high temperatures.
NTSB makes safety recommendations to FAA.

March 30, 2010 According to NTSB, FAA should revise airman knowledge tests to include questions regarding electronic flight and navigation displays, and require all manufacturers of certified electronic primary flight displays to include information in aircraft flight manuals regarding abnormal equipment operation or malfunction. FAA should also incorporate training elements regarding electronic primary flight displays into training materials and aeronautical knowledge requirements for all pilots.
Iowa DOT Director testifies on Recovery Act successes.

March 30, 2010 When addressing House panel, Iowa DoT director said states have achieved great success putting to work economic recovery funds and will proceed with additional infrastructure investment if Congress provides money in job creation bill this year. Nancy Richardson, chairwoman of AASHTO's Standing Committee on Finance and Administration, appeared before the House and noted "every state obligated every highway dollar they were eligible to receive" under American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

March 30, 2010 Phoenix Award for Innovation in Restoration went to Spotless Carpet Cleaners and Janitorial Services for its work on 26,000 sq ft private residence that suffered a fire from a lightning strike and subsequent water damage when flames were extinguished. Competition also recognized its first international winner when Johns Lyng, based in Melbourne, Australia won Phoenix Award for Innovation in Reconstruction for its work on the Moama Bowling Club, which was also damaged by a fire.
BIO supports extension of Cellulosic Biofuel tax credit.

March 30, 2010 BIO thanked Reps. Earl Pomeroy and John Shimkus for introducing bill to extend Cellulosic Ethanol Production Tax Credit by 3 years. BIO also called for extending tax code parity to algae-based biofuels and full range of innovative biobased technologies. Brent Erickson, executive VP for BIO's Industrial and Environmental Section, stated that rapidly increasing U.S. production of advanced biofuels is a sound way to reduce U.S. carbon emissions and reliance on imported petroleum.
