EPA releases draft dioxin report for public comment.

May 25, 2010 EPA's Reanalysis of Key Issues Related to Dioxin Toxicity and Response to NAS Comments aims to protect health of American public. Draft contains agency's response to key comments and recommendations in National Academy of Science's 2006 report as well as potential cancer and non-cancer human health effects that may result from exposure. Report will undergo external peer review by expert panel of scientists convened by EPA's Science Advisory Board in July 2010.
ESFI promotes importance of electrical safety.

May 25, 2010 ESFI is encouraging employers and employees to promote importance of electrical safety during National Electrical Safety Month and has created the Never Assume Safety Series to address most critical workplace electrical safety issues. Some guidelines include: plan every job and think about what could go wrong; use right tools for job; isolate equipment from energy sources; work on electrical equipment and conductors only when de-energized; and wear protective clothing and equipment.
First Quarter Industrial Laser Orders down 21% from last year.

May 25, 2010 According to AMT, orders of industrial laser equipment and systems in first quarter of 2010 are reported at $51.3 million, a decrease of 21.2% compared to first quarter of 2009. Although value of orders declined, total unit sales increased by 13.6%. Report compiled from 19 manufacturers and distributors also shows declines from fourth quarter 2009. Unit sales of CO2 lasers fell 23.2%, while Nd:YAG orders declined 18.6%. Of 209 total units ordered, 49.3% were configured as laser systems.

May 25, 2010 IPC is actively refuting statements, published by Swedish non-governmental organization, that contains information about brominated flame retardants (BFRs). Called incomplete and misrepresentative of electronics industry, "Electronics Without Brominated Flame Retardants and PVC - a Market Overview" contains misleading statements about environmental and health concerns associated with BFRs. In short, it is questioned whether BFRs should be removed just because they can be removed.
Construction Materials Prices edge up in April.

May 25, 2010 According to May 18 producer price index report by U.S. Labor Department, price of construction materials rose 1.1% in April, marking sixth straight monthly increase. Prices for construction materials are up 5.7% from same time last year. Overall, nation's wholesale prices are down 0.1% for the month, but are 5.7% higher from same time last year. However, core prices, which exclude energy and food, are only up 1% from April 2009.

His duties are to solicit manuscripts from scientists and practitioners as well as establish publication policies and editorial focus of JOEH. Additionally, Nicas said he will "enhance the visibility of JOEH and provide a forum for discussions."

PTDA Market Report shows growing U.S. and Canadian sales.

May 25, 2010 According to PTDA's Market Outlook Report, U.S. and Canadian manufacturing sales increased for third consecutive month in March. Report shows 5.6% and 18.5% sales rises for U.S. and Canadian manufacturers, respectively. For U.S., sales comparisons between first quarter of 2010 and 2009 still reflect declines. Year-to-date sales are also down 3.4%, while Canadian year-to-year sales rose 7.7%. Also, U.S. manufacturer confidence maintained neutral position for third consecutive month.

May 24, 2010 According to BSA/IDC Global PC Software Piracy Study, installations of unlicensed software on personal computers in UAE remained unchanged at 36% from 2008 to 2009. Despite economic recession, piracy of software on PCs declined in many markets, dropping in 54 economies and increasing in only 19. However, global piracy rate increased from 41 to 43%, largely the result of fast growing, higher piracy markets such as China, India, and Brazil increasing overall software market.

May 24, 2010 Western Wind and Solar Integration Study assesses operational impacts and economics of increased contributions from wind/solar energy producers on power grid. Specifically, it examines benefits and challenges of integrating enough wind/solar energy capacity into grid to produce 35% of its electricity by 2017. Findings indicate target is technically feasible and does not necessitate extensive additional infrastructure. However, it does require key changes to operational practice.
