Workshop addresses emergency evacuation for disabled persons.

May 26, 2010 ANSI Homeland Security Standards Panel has released agenda for final workshop in its summer series on emergency preparedness for persons with special needs. Titled Emergency Evacuation Operations, final workshop will cover standards development for emergency planning and contingencies for evacuation needs and concerns of persons with disabilities. This includes localized building evacuations as well as widespread evacuation.
NTSB offers safety recommendations to EASA.

May 26, 2010 NTSB recommendations include A-10-88 which requires small/medium flocking bird certification test be conducted using lowest expected fan speed, for minimum climb rate. Recommendation A-10-90 covers checklist/procedure for dual-engine failure of turbine-powered aircraft at low altitude, while A-10-89 addresses need for changes in large flocking bird certification test standards. Pilots ability to ditch aircraft is covered in A-10-91. Other recommendations include A-10-92 through -95.
Financial Reform Bill Passage commended by ATA.

May 26, 2010 ATA applauded U.S. Senate and leadership of Arkansas Senator Blanche Lincoln for passing "Restoring American Financial Stability Act of 2010," legislation which will stop speculation on Wall Street. James C. May, ATA President and CEO, called the passage "an enormous step forward in stopping Wall Street's manipulation of energy prices." If provisions are retained in conference, legislation will help lower fuel costs for all Americans and let supply and demand dictate energy prices.
ASQ presents inaugural social responsibility medal.

Craig Venter Institute pertaining to successful completion of project to design, chemically synthesize, and transplant complete genome into bacterial cell. According to BIO president and CEO Jim Greenwood, this achievement "can provide insights into working of microbial genomes that could lead to advances in health, agriculture, and industrial biotechnology."
Air Passenger and Cargo Traffic see double-digit increases.

May 26, 2010 ATA reported passenger revenue, based on sample group of carriers, rose 12.5% in April 2010 versus same month in 2009. This marked fourth consecutive month of revenue growth and reflected industry still in recovery. While ~0.5% more passengers traveled on US airlines in April, average price to fly one mile rose nearly 14%. International passenger revenue rose 15 percent, led by 37% gain in transpacific markets. Also, US airlines saw cargo traffic rise 22% year over year in March 2010.
Dispersants Update Conference addressed Gulf of Mexico issues.

May 26, 2010 U.S. EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson and United States Coast Guard Rear Admiral Mary Landry held press conference call to discuss BP's use of dispersants in Gulf of Mexico. Effective and efficient use of dispersants was recommended to reduce volume of application in order to prevent unknown environmental effects. Also, BP's scientific analysis of alternative dispersants is considered insufficient. EPA and other government scientists will independently verify data presented by BP.

He cited inseparable aspects of transportation and economy and stressed need for investment. Primary goals of this 5-day conference are to focus on next multiyear highway and transit authorization bill, climate change, and approaches to working in tough budget times.
EPA releases draft dioxin report for public comment.

May 25, 2010 EPA's Reanalysis of Key Issues Related to Dioxin Toxicity and Response to NAS Comments aims to protect health of American public. Draft contains agency's response to key comments and recommendations in National Academy of Science's 2006 report as well as potential cancer and non-cancer human health effects that may result from exposure. Report will undergo external peer review by expert panel of scientists convened by EPA's Science Advisory Board in July 2010.
ESFI promotes importance of electrical safety.

May 25, 2010 ESFI is encouraging employers and employees to promote importance of electrical safety during National Electrical Safety Month and has created the Never Assume Safety Series to address most critical workplace electrical safety issues. Some guidelines include: plan every job and think about what could go wrong; use right tools for job; isolate equipment from energy sources; work on electrical equipment and conductors only when de-energized; and wear protective clothing and equipment.
First Quarter Industrial Laser Orders down 21% from last year.

May 25, 2010 According to AMT, orders of industrial laser equipment and systems in first quarter of 2010 are reported at $51.3 million, a decrease of 21.2% compared to first quarter of 2009. Although value of orders declined, total unit sales increased by 13.6%. Report compiled from 19 manufacturers and distributors also shows declines from fourth quarter 2009. Unit sales of CO2 lasers fell 23.2%, while Nd:YAG orders declined 18.6%. Of 209 total units ordered, 49.3% were configured as laser systems.
