May 21, 2010 ESFI is encouraging employers to promote electrical safety during National Electrical Safety Month by increasing employee awareness of electrical hazards that may exist in office settings. ESFI recommends avoiding overloading outlets with too many appliances, unplugging appliances when not in use, and inspecting electrical cords once a month. Also, electrical cords should not be placed in high traffic areas, under carpets, or across doorways where they pose tripping hazard.

May 20, 2010 Signed with National Accreditation Board for Education and Training (NABET), constituent of Quality Council of India, ANSI's cooperation agreement is intended to promote and facilitate development of skill standards, personnel credentialing, and accreditation system in India. He has been ASTM International member since 1994, served as D35 chairman from 2004-2009, and led US Technical Advisory Group to ISO TC 221 on Geosynthetics (D35.96) since 2000. He is also a member of Committee E11 on Quality and Statistics.

Electric Utility Plans improve coal ash impoundment safety.

May 20, 2010 US EPA is releasing action plans developed by 16 electric utility facilities with coal ash impoundments, describing measures they are taking to make impoundments safer. These action plans are in response to EPA's final assessment reports on structural integrity of impoundments that the agency made public in February. Additionally, EPA is releasing assessment reports on structural integrity of 37 additional coal ash impoundments at 15 facilities across country.

May 20, 2010 ANSI has been named approved accreditor of certification bodies by U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) for Information Assurance (IA) Workforce Improvement Program. Designation is stated in revisions to manual issued under DoD Directive 8570.1, Information Assurance Training, Certification, and Workforce Management. Institute has accredited 30 personnel certification bodies involved in DoD program through its own Personnel Certification Accreditation Program, begun in 2003.

Pennsylvania Students win Team America Rocketry Challenge.

May 19, 2010 A team from Penn Manor High School in Millersville, PA took first place at Eighth Annual Team America Rocketry Challenge, earning title of national champion. Four-member team won world's largest rocket contest after spending months designing, building, and test launching their model rocket. Challenge kicked off last September with 669 teams from across nation vying for chance to compete among top 100 qualifying teams at finals held outside of Washington, D.C.

NAM Economist Responds to April Industrial Production Report.

May 19, 2010 NAM Chief Economist Dave Huether commented on Federal Reserve Industrial Production report, which said manufacturing production rose 1.1% in April - the third increase in 4 months. Huether called this "an encouraging sign" and said this upturn was most likely driven by housing, business inventories, exports, and business investment. Expecting pace of manufacturing recovery to moderate in coming months, Huether said pre-recession manufacturing will not be attained until late 2011.
