ANSI seeks comments on proposed ISO technical activity.

June 4, 2010 Standardization Administration of China has submitted proposal to ISO for new field of technical activity, ISO TS/P 212, which would develop general technical rules on determining energy savings that could apply to renovation projects on existing or new building facilities, industrial utilities, and processes that seek to become more energy efficient. As U.S. member body to ISO, ANSI invites all interested stakeholders to submit comments on proposal by July 2, 2010.
ILMA Chooses Roy Firestone as 2010 keynote speaker.

June 4, 2010 Journalist and television host Roy Firestone will deliver keynote address at 2010 ILMA Annual Meeting, which takes place October 9-12 in Indian Wells, CA. According to ILMA Executive Director Celeste Powers, "Roy will be an incredibly entertaining way to start the Annual Meeting." NEMA's CFL Index posts solid growth during first quarter.

June 4, 2010 NEMA's compact fluorescent lamps index reversed negative trend that dated back to first quarter 2009, registering 3% year-over-year increase. Conversely, incandescent lamps index fell to second lowest level on record showing year-over-year decline of 2.2% during first quarter of 2010. Dichotomous growth patterns between residential incandescent lamps and medium screw-base CFLs resulted in CFLs regaining market share, increasing to 24.2% from 22.0% in 2009Q4.
NEMA's T8 Fluorescent Lamp Index recoups losses from 2009.

June 4, 2010 NEMA's T8 lamp shipments index increased 7.2% during first quarter of 2010 compared to same period 1 year ago. Moreover, 2010Q1 reading is nearly 4.0% above level for all of 2009. T12 lamp shipments posted year-over-year growth of 5.0% for quarter, while shipments of T12 lamps have remained stable over past 8 quarters after experiencing significant declines in volume following initial phase-out of T12 magnetic ballasts that began July 1, 2005.
Manufacturing Activity remains strong in May.

Overall index edged down slightly from 60.4 in April to 59.7 in May, and there were no significant movements in most of survey components such as production or orders. Recent upturn in housing activity due to expiration of homebuyer tax credit is having positive impact on some industries, while rise in employment component report to 59.9 is highest level in 6 years.

EBCI Slips in May but positive outlook remains.

June 4, 2010 North American business conditions continued to improve on balance in May, although positive sentiment was less widespread than previous month. Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American conditions dropped 3 points to 68.8 but remained above 50 point level indicative of environment conducive to electroindustry growth for fifth straight month. Meanwhile, EBCI for future North American conditions rose 3.2 points to 77.1, its highest level since January.
Support to Delay EPA Lead Rule urged by AAMA, Manufacturers.

June 4, 2010 On May 20, 2010, AAMA's Rich Walker met with U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-DE) and EPA and government/industry representatives to urge their support for 1-yr delay of EPA's Lead: Renovation, Repair, and Painting Rule. Data presented showed EPA's cost estimates of compliance for window installation to be severely understated and that adverse market reaction was already being felt. Walker also said premature implementation of rule undermines 2009 and 2010 federal energy-efficient tax credits.

New Permit Requirement for Pesticide Discharge is proposed by EPA.

June 3, 2010 EPA-proposed permit requirement would decrease amount of pesticides discharged to US waters, subsequently protecting human health and environment. This action would require all operators to reduce pesticide discharges by using lowest effective amount of pesticide, prevent leaks/spills, calibrate equipment, and monitor/report adverse incidents. Additional controls, such as integrated pest management practices, are built in for operators who exceed annual treatment area threshold.
R&D Investments to speed developement of cutting-edge solar technologies.

June 3, 2010 US Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced selections of projects for investment of up to $62 million, distributed over 5 years, to research, develop, and demonstrate Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) systems capable of providing low-cost electrical power. According to Chu, investing in development of low-cost solar technologies can create new jobs and help create clean-energy future. Specifically, award selections cover CSP Systems Studies and Component Feasibility Studies.
