RMA provides tire retailers, auto dealers, and automotive repair shops with Be Tire Smart brochures and other materials. Also, participating retail outlets will promote tire care through advertising, promotions, free tire pressure checks, and conducting media outreach.

IPC Comments on California's Impractical Green Chemistry Proposal

IPC's Environment, Health, and Safety Steering Committee submitted comments to California's Department of Toxic Substances Control on their proposal for a green chemistry regulation. Proposal includes list of hundreds of chemicals of concern that cannot be in any products sold in California. IPC comments caution DTSC that having enormous list of banned substances without conducting thorough alternatives assessment for each chemical will inevitably lead to inadvertent negative results.

Governing magazine named Pete Rahn, 2008 AASHTO president and current director of Missouri DoT, as one of its 2009 Public Officials of the Year. Noting the success of Missouri's I-64 project in St. Louis, Governing magazine specifically praised Rahn's ability to "partner with the private sector in unique ways to build large-scale transportation projects quickly and affordably." It also took into account Rahn's willingness to take risks and his desire to make a difference.

Air Transport Association Reports Second Consecutive Quarter of Airline Cost Declines

Airline Cost Index, incorporating data through second quarter of 2009, showed composite cost index fell 29% in second quarter of 2009 versus same period of 2008. Largest components of index, which includes all operating expenses and interest expense, were labor, fuel, and transport-related expense. While average price paid for fuel fell 36%, other categories seeing year-over-year declines in input costs included aircraft rent/ownership and maintenance material.

Glass for Solar Applications Now Covered in New ASTM Standards Development Activity

During virtual meeting, a new ASTM International standards developing activity, Subcommittee E44.20 on Glass for Solar Applications, was formed. Scope of subcommittee is development and maintenance of standards for glass and glass coatings for solar applications that include, but are not limited to, photovoltaic, solar thermal, and concentrating applications. Standards will address characteristics that affect performance, durability, and reliability.

Air Transport Association Expects 4 Percent Decline in Air Travel Over 12-Day Thanksgiving Holiday Period

ATA said it expects 4% year-over-year decrease in number of passengers traveling during 2009 Thanksgiving holiday season, from Friday, November 20 through Tuesday, December 1. Flights are expected to be full, driven by decrease in available seats and deep discounting. ATA also says carriers have cut back schedules in response to economic pressures, with capacity reductions deepest since 1942. Organization also expects government to open up Special Activity Airspace to help ease congestion.

AASHTO States Honored for Leadership to Improve Highway Safety

On October 25 of this year, 2009 AASHTO Safety Leadership Awards were presented to states of Colorado, Nebraska, and New Mexico at AASHTO Annual Meeting in Palm Desert, CA. While each state selected employed differing programs and approaches, all demonstrated strong leadership, support of behavioral approaches to improving highway safety through flexing Highway Safety Improvement Program funds, and success in reducing highway fatalities and serious injuries.

State transportation departments in Arkansas, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington were among honorees recognized by the Roadway Safety Foundation and Federal Highway Administration for innovation in operations, planning, and roadway design to reduce fatalities and injuries on our nation's highways. National Roadway Safety awards were presented by U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood who said we can never stop looking for new ways to make driving safer.

According to Market Outlook Report, U.S. and Canadian manufacturers posted increased sales in September 2009. Confidence in U.S. market, measured on 1-10 scale, held at at 4.7 for third consecutive month. Canadian confidence rose by 0.1 from last month to 4.2. Respectively, U.S. and Canadian manufacturers' sales rose 5.3% and 14.0% in September 2009 but were down 29.6% and 29.1% compared to 2008. In the 9 overall product categories, 7 (U.S.) and 8 (Canadian) posted sales gains.

California Metal-X (CMX) is the first brass ingot manufacturer to receive certification to NSF/ANSI Standard 61 (NSF 61) - Drinking Water System Components - Health Effects by NSF International. Certification to this American National Standard for public water supply products, required by California Waterworks Standards, also includes Annex G, which meets requirements of California Health and Safety Code 116875 requirements for lead content (AB 1953).
