IPC Comments on California's Impractical Green Chemistry Proposal

November 12, 2009 IPC's Environment, Health, and Safety Steering Committee submitted comments to California's Department of Toxic Substances Control on their proposal for a green chemistry regulation. Proposal includes list of hundreds of chemicals of concern that cannot be in any products sold in California. IPC comments caution DTSC that having enormous list of banned substances without conducting thorough alternatives assessment for each chemical will inevitably lead to inadvertent negative results.

Air Transport Association Reports Second Consecutive Quarter of Airline Cost Declines

November 11, 2009 Airline Cost Index, incorporating data through second quarter of 2009, showed composite cost index fell 29% in second quarter of 2009 versus same period of 2008. Largest components of index, which includes all operating expenses and interest expense, were labor, fuel, and transport-related expense. While average price paid for fuel fell 36%, other categories seeing year-over-year declines in input costs included aircraft rent/ownership and maintenance material.

November 11, 2009 During virtual meeting, a new ASTM International standards developing activity, Subcommittee E44.20 on Glass for Solar Applications, was formed. Scope of subcommittee is development and maintenance of standards for glass and glass coatings for solar applications that include, but are not limited to, photovoltaic, solar thermal, and concentrating applications. Standards will address characteristics that affect performance, durability, and reliability.
Air Transport Association Expects 4 Percent Decline in Air Travel Over 12-Day Thanksgiving Holiday Period

November 11, 2009 ATA said it expects 4% year-over-year decrease in number of passengers traveling during 2009 Thanksgiving holiday season, from Friday, November 20 through Tuesday, December 1. Flights are expected to be full, driven by decrease in available seats and deep discounting. ATA also says carriers have cut back schedules in response to economic pressures, with capacity reductions deepest since 1942. Organization also expects government to open up Special Activity Airspace to help ease congestion.
AASHTO States Honored for Leadership to Improve Highway Safety

November 11, 2009 According to Market Outlook Report, U.S. and Canadian manufacturers posted increased sales in September 2009. Confidence in U.S. market, measured on 1-10 scale, held at at 4.7 for third consecutive month. Canadian confidence rose by 0.1 from last month to 4.2. Respectively, U.S. and Canadian manufacturers' sales rose 5.3% and 14.0% in September 2009 but were down 29.6% and 29.1% compared to 2008. In the 9 overall product categories, 7 (U.S.) and 8 (Canadian) posted sales gains.

Certification to this American National Standard for public water supply products, required by California Waterworks Standards, also includes Annex G, which meets requirements of California Health and Safety Code 116875 requirements for lead content (AB 1953).
