Review Team finds Boeing 787 design safe.

March 26, 2014 FAA released findings of a team formed in January 2013 to review the Boeing 787's design, manufacture, and assembly processes. Joint team of FAA and Boeing technical experts found that the aircraft was soundly designed, met its intended safety level, and that the manufacturer and FAA had effective processes in place to identify and correct issues that emerged before and after certification. In addition, team made 7 recommendations for further improvements in Boeing processes and FAA oversight.

March 26, 2014 Dr. Calestous Juma, Professor at Harvard Kennedy School, and Dr. Jim Murray, Professor at University of California at Davis, will deliver keynote addresses at 2014 BIO Livestock Biotech Summit (September 16–18). David Edwards, director of Animal Biotechnology at BIO, called Juma Murray "leaders in the field of using technology to feed the world" and said they will provide "first-hand look at opportunities for animal biotechnology to positively impact people’s diets and health."

March 26, 2014 EPA’s voluntary SmartWay Transport Partnership is celebrating 10 years as a market-driven initiative that empowers businesses to move goods in the cleanest most energy-efficient way possible, saving businesses money while protecting public health and fighting climate change. Over the last 10 years, SmartWay has eliminated 51.6 million metric tons of carbon pollution, resulting in savings of more than 120 million barrels of oil, and $16.8 billion in fuel costs.

March 26, 2014 As announced by U.S. EPA and Department of Justice, LSB Industries Inc. (LSB) and 4 of its subsidiaries have agreed to reduce harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) by meeting emission limits at plants in Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Total penalty of $725,000 is also due to resolve alleged violations of Clean Air Act and applicable Oklahoma state law. Additionally, companies must continuously monitor emissions and make any necessary operational improvements.
Robert J. Dowding to receive first-ever Vanguard Award.

March 26, 2014 Robert J. Dowding, Research Manager for Materials and Manufacturing Science, U.S. Army Research Laboratory, has been selected to receive Vanguard Award from MPIF. Award recognizes powder metallurgy industry champions from end-user community whose long-time promotion of the technology has contributed to expansion of powder metal applications. Over course of Dowding’s tenure at ARL, much of his PM-based R&D work has been related to material and process development for tungsten and tungsten alloys.

EPA calls for Green Chemistry Challenge Award nominations.

March 25, 2014 EPA is asking companies or institutions to nominate their innovative technologies for the 2014 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards. Agency is looking for nominations that have developed safer chemical processes and products that may reduce the generation and use of chemicals that are hazardous to people’s health and the environment. EPA anticipates recognizing 5 award winning green chemistry technologies this fall. Nominations are due by April 30, 2014.

ANSI Z136.1 guides safe use of lasers and laser systems by defining control measures for 7 laser hazard classifications. Some highlights include: 19 new definitions of key terms; increase in allowed exposure levels for wavelengths between 1.2–1.4 µm; and updated section on "special qualifications" for medical-related exposures to include MPEs expressed in terms of illuminance.

March 20, 2014 ASC signed a 3-year agreement with the Adhesion Society whereby the Council will manage the Society's Annual Meeting, oversee its membership effort, and serve as the Home Office for the Society. The Council and Society previously had a 1-year agreement covering the fiscal year from June 30, 2013 through July 1, 2014. Success of the arrangement allowed the Society and Council leadership to feel comfortable with a longer term arrangement.

First woman to receive this honor, Kullman accepted award "on behalf of all of the people who have worked to make DuPont a leader in industrial biotechnology." BIO's Brent Erickson lauded Kullman "for efforts to drive commercialization of industrial biotech processes and renewable, sustainable biobased products."
ATA welcomes electronic logging device proposal.

March 20, 2014 ATA officials welcomed proposal by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to mandate use of electronic logging devices in commercial trucks as potential improvement for highway safety. ATA successfully advocated for inclusion of provision mandating ELDs in most recent highway authorization law. ATA has a few concerns with some details relating to supporting document retention requirements and grandfathering of existing devices, among others, and will address those with FMCSA going forward.
