NAM's John Engler pledges support for America Works Act.

June 28, 2010 Following introduction of America Works Act by Senator Kay Hagan (D-NC), NAM President John Engler said bill recognizes need for strong technical workforce and value of industry-recognized credentials such as Manufacturing Skills Certification System (MSCS). Engler also said that MSCS offers new and transitioning workers access to in-demand skills so they can prepare for high-paying manufacturing jobs. NAM aims to work with lawmakers in both chambers to ensure bill's passage.
ATA commends Congressional adoption of finance reforms.

June 28, 2010 ATA's James C. May commended Congressional conference committee for work in obtaining agreement to send President Obama a bill to stop Wall Street's speculation in oil markets. Bill will establish regulatory oversight and transparency in commodity markets, require exchange trading and clearing of most derivatives and other contracts, and allow regulators to stop large financial institutions from manipulating markets. Agency urges swift work by Congress to send bill to President for signature.
National Hydrogen Association honors Senator Byron Dorgan.

June 28, 2010 NHA presented Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) with the Spark Matsunaga Memorial Hydrogen Award in recognition of his long history of leadership in Congress to advance America's hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. Senator Dorgan is a founding Co-Chair of the Senate Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Caucus and had integral role in advancing hydrogen and fuel cell provisions in Energy Policy Act of 2005, Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, and American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
Interagency Program seeks to increase cybersecurity education.

June 28, 2010 Coordinated by NIST, National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) promotes cybersecurity awareness and know-how across country and among citizens of all ages. Interagency program is divided into 4 tracks: National Cybersecurity Awareness, Formal Cybersecurity Education, Federal Cybersecurity Workforce Structure, and Cybersecurity Workforce Training and Professional Development. It aims to improve computer security as well as prepare future employees for cybersecurity workforce.

June 28, 2010 Applications for NIST measurement science and engineering fellowships for graduate, post-doctoral, and senior researchers are being accepted by Universities of Maryland and Colorado, which are administering the programs. University of Maryland-administered portion places successful applicants in positions at NIST's campus at Gaithersburg, MD or Hollings Marine Laboratory in Charleston, SC. Fellows selected by University of Colorado will be placed at NIST's Boulder, CO laboratories.

Biofuel Organizations ask Congress to extend biofuels tax credit.

June 28, 2010 BIO, Advanced BioFuels Association, and Algal Biomass Organization joined other trade organizations and biofuel companies to ask leaders of House Ways and Means Committee to extend expiration of cellulosic biofuels production tax credit, make algae and other advanced biofuels eligible, and create optional, refundable investment tax credit in next appropriate revenue vehicle considered by House. These policies would demonstrate enduring federal commitment to increasing alternative energy production.
FAA Awards Contracts for environmentally friendly technology.

June 28, 2010 FAA announced $125 million in contracts to develop and demonstrate technologies that will reduce commercial jet fuel consumption, emissions, and noise. Contracts are part of FAA's Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions and Noise (CLEEN) program to speed introduction of "green" technology into aviation. Boeing, General Electric, Honeywell, Pratt and Whitney, and Rolls-Royce-North America will match or exceed FAA's contribution, bringing overall value of program to more than $250 million.

June 25, 2010 NAM President addressed lifting of 6-month moratorium on wells in depth of 500 ft or more by U.S. District Court in Eastern District of Louisiana. Specifically, John Engler called Judge Feldman's decision "vital to our future energy independence and a step in the right direction" for a healthy economy. He cited job losses incurred by said moratorium and noted its consequences for manufacturers "who make and supply equipment, services, engines, boats and materials such as steel and concrete."

June 24, 2010 New business volume for May increased 5% when compared to same period in 2009, according to ELFA Monthly Leasing and Finance Index. Volume decreased by 6% when compared to prior month, but charge-offs improved to 1.6% in May 2010, delinquencies increased slightly from previous month, and credit approvals remained flat at 68%. Data reflect slowly recovering economy, "But the trend appears to be heading in the right direction," said William G. Sutton, ELFA President.

June 24, 2010 NEMA Premium® Efficiency Transformer Program will help utilities, commercial buildings, and industrial plants incorporate high-efficiency electrical transformers into their operations. Designation requires 30% fewer losses than existing DOE regulations (10 CFR 431) for low-voltage, dry-type distribution transformers. According to NEMA Industry Director John Caskey, actual efficiencies of transformers will range from 98% to more than 99%, depending on size.

This remands case back to District Court and then back to USDA to determine what interim measures can be implemented while agency completes environmental impact statement process. News was welcomed by coalition of agricultural organizations who had filed joint friend-of-the-court brief to Supreme Court in support of petitioners in "Monsanto Co. v. Geertson Seed Farms."
