June 18, 2010 TRFA announced that Dr. Krish Vora, Senior Research Specialist with Electrical Market Division of 3M, will serve as Chair of 2010 Annual Meeting, to be held September 12-14. Dr. Vora joined 3M in 1981, and in 1988 he joined Electrical Market Division where he developed products in area of cold-shrink, rubber and plastic tapes, thermoset epoxy and polyurethane resins, mastics and sealants, and heat-shrink. Dr. Vora's current research interest is in thermoset resins for electrical applications.
EPA Program will help state capital cities design sustainable communities.

June 18, 2010 Greening America's Capitals program will assist state capitals develop vision of environmentally friendly neighborhoods that incorporate green building and green infrastructure. Design assistance will be given to up to 4 cities per year to help them use sustainable designs to develop neighborhoods with multiple social, economic, and environmental benefits. With EPA funding, design teams will assist city staff in creating sustainability models for other cities to follow.
TIA announces fleet-commercial agreement with Comdata.

Comdata specializes in providing electronic payment solutions to thousands of commercial fleets across North America. Through Comdata's network, TIA members now have access to cardholders who use Comdata to pay for services.
ASTM Standard aids in measurement of system friction forces.

June 18, 2010 Useful to slide and engine companies, as well as makers of bushing materials, ASTM G203, Guide for Determining Friction Energy Dissipation in Reciprocating Tribosystems, was developed by Subcommittee G02.50 on Friction, part of ASTM International Committee G02 on Wear and Erosion. Guide will be useful in testing because single number can be used to describe friction behavior of reciprocating tribosystem and that number will include all of the system responses.

June 18, 2010 ASTM International Committee F13 on Pedestrian/Walkway Safety and Footwear is working on new standard concerning footwear for workers who do not necessarily need safety toe shoes but could use other protection such as puncture resistance, electrical shock protection, and electrical grounding. This standard - ASTM WK27855, Specification for Performance Requirements for Soft Toe Protective Footwear (Non-Safety/Non-Protective Toe) - is being developed by Subcommittee F13.30 on Footwear.

Also, members praised open and transparent process in developing ISO Strategic Plan 2011-2015, presented by Sadao Takeda, ISO vice president, policy, and Rob Steele, ISO Secretary-General.

Winners will compete for Grand Prize, based on judging by panel of experts, and People Choice Award, determined by general public via online voting, to be announced on October 31, 2010.

According to market study data, demand for residential windows and skylights is expected to increase, while residential door market will remain stagnant. According to study, weak outlook is expected to force declines before flattening out in 2011. Non-residential glazing is also expected to decline.

According to Dwyer, fuel cells have not yet proven their return on investment to material handling end-users. Brower, on the other hand, touts benefits of hydrogen fuel cells and how they can improve end-user operations.

June 17, 2010 OSHA recognized National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Crane Operator Certification Program during signing ceremony on May 17, 2010. This makes 2 of 4 crane operator certification programs recognized by OSHA accredited under ANSI's Personnel Certification Accreditation Program: NCCER and the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO); latter was recognized by OSHA in 1999.

June 17, 2010 ASTM C1712, Test Method for Rapid Assessment of Static Segregation Resistance of Self-Consolidating Concrete Using Penetration Test, helps concrete producers develop and provide means of QC when measuring and maintaining stability of self-consolidating concrete mixtures. According to Mark Bury, chair of subcommittee responsible for this standard, test method can be used in laboratory or field, and results can be obtained within minutes of self-consolidating concrete production/placement.

EPA Notifies States of Areas that Would Not Meet Tighter Lead Air Standards.

June 17, 2010 US EPA notified states of areas that would not meet new, more protective national air quality standards for lead. Twelve of those states were notified that they have at least one area under consideration for nonattainment designation, based on 2008 lead standards. Using data from currently operating monitors, EPA will designate nonattainment areas by October 2010. States and tribes may comment on plans outlined in letters and provide additional information to EPA by August 16, 2010.
