ANSI revises date for July Federation meeting.

July 2, 2010 ANSI has changed date for upcoming town hall-style discussion for ANSI members with Rob Steele, Secretary General of ISO. Meeting will now be held on Monday, July 19, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Consumer Electronics Association in Arlington, VA. ANSI members are encouraged to attend this meeting and share their thoughts on key issues in international standardization with Mr. Steele.

Events will also include workshops and interactive presentations.

Award recognizes Stephanopoulos' pioneering work in field of industrial biotechnology and in particular metabolic engineering and its practical application to industrial processes.

July 2, 2010 To help prevent rise in bumping-related incidents, Subcommittee F12.50 on Locking Devices has recently revised ASTM F883, Performance Specification for Padlocks, to include method of measuring resistance of particular locking technology to bump attack. Addition of bump test allows users to be aware of where their locks qualify for bump resistance or if they have any bump resistant technology in them at all.
Hydraulic Institute seeks reviewers for updated pump standard.

July 2, 2010 Hydraulic Institute, under approval of ANSI, is seeking qualified individuals in North America to participate in review process for draft of updated standard ANSI/HI 11.6 - Submersible Pump Tests. This revision requires that submersible pumps be guaranteed and tested as complete units. Standard does not identify individual sources of losses within boundary of submersible pump unit. It includes details that state how acceptance testing shall be performed and defines pump acceptance criteria.

FAA awards final set of major NextGen engineering contracts.

July 1, 2010 FAA announced that Metron Aviation, Inc. and Booz Hamilton Inc. received contracts to perform engineering work that will help transform and modernize nation's airspace into Next Generation Air Transportation System. Contracts are last of 6 awarded under umbrella portfolio called System Engineering 2020, which was designed to encourage small business participation. The $1.15 billion contract awarded to Metron Aviation for 10 years is one of the largest ever awarded by FAA to a small business.
EPA voids certificates for import of recreational vehicles.

July 1, 2010 After lengthy investigation, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency withdrew approval of import and sale of up to 200,000 gas-powered off-road motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles. EPA suspects that tailpipe emissions information was either incomplete or falsified and is considering an enforcement action under Clean Air Act, which could lead to significant financial penalties against businesses that manufactured or imported these types of recreational vehicles.
EPA releases toxicity testing data for 8 oil dispersants.

July 1, 2010 U.S. EPA released peer reviewed results from first round of its own independent toxicity testing on 8 oil dispersants. Results indicated that none of the dispersants tested, including product used in Gulf of Mexico, displayed biologically significant endocrine disrupting activity. While dispersant products alone, not mixed with oil, have roughly the same impact on aquatic life, JD-2000 and Corexit 9500 were less toxic to small fish and JD-2000 and SAF-RON GOLD were least toxic to mysid shrimp.
AIA Announces Support for national space policy.

Addition of showerheads enables consumers to renovate bathrooms with WaterSense-labeled products. Bathrooms remodeled to include WaterSense-labeled toilet, faucet, and showerhead will conserve water as well as electricity.

July 1, 2010 Since decreasing supply of fresh water is leading to competition for water resources, an ISO Project Committee has been established to address treated wastewater re-use for irrigation. Another ISO committee has been formed to increase safety while eliminating economic barriers to trade in development of amusement park facilities. Third committee will focus on biogas, the combustible mixture of gases produced by microorganisms when manure and other biological wastes ferment in absence of air.

July 1, 2010 Voluntary standard ANSI/ASABE S598 JAN 2010 establishes method to determine percentage in load of harvested grains that is likely to be residue from crop previously harvested by same machine. NSF International, an ANSI accredited standards developer, has published NSF/ANSI 332-2010, which establishes consistent approach to evaluation and determination of environmentally preferable and sustainable resilient floor coverings with information that is clear, verifiable, and accurate.

July 1, 2010 Proposed standard ASTM WK26298 will present repeatable, precise, and accurate test method for analyzing moisture levels in trona, a fine mineral powder that has proven to be effective at removing acid gases from air emissions. Such analysis is key to diagnosing problems and to preventing incorrect analysis. ASTM WK26298, Test Method for Determination of Free Water in Trona, is being developed by Subcommittee E01.02 on Ores, Concentrates and Related Metallurgical Materials.

July 1, 2010 As part of its ongoing work supporting FAA to develop Special Federal Aviation Regulation for small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, ASTM International Committee F38 on Unmanned Air Vehicle Systems is currently working on proposed registration and marking standard. Proposed standard ASTM WK27055 sets up proper paperwork necessary to assure FAA that sUAS has all documentation necessary and submitted to allow FAA to give the operator a permit.
