IPC Conference focuses on electronics reliability, sustainability.

August 4, 2010 Bringing together latest research by industry experts, IPC will host Technical Conference on Electronics Sustainability. It will take place September 28-30 at Electronics Midwest in Rosemont, IL. Range of papers will be presented, addressing topics dealing with tin whiskers, quality and reliability management challenges, and head-on-pillow defect sources. Among others, additional papers will cover use of IPC stencil design rules, tin corrosion in QFN packages, and how to mitigate it.

August 4, 2010 Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current conditions declined nearly 7 points in July, falling to 63.5 from 70.4 one month earlier. While indes reading implies economic environment faced by electrical equipment manufacturers continued to improve on balance in July, fewer panelists reported improvement than those last several months. Also, EBCI for future North American conditions dropped 12.7 points to 57.7 in July, its second drop in as many months.

August 4, 2010 Kristen Record, a high school physics teacher who spent 3 summers studying hydrogen fuel cells at U.S. DOE NREL has been named one of the math and science teachers of the year by White House panel. Record worked with NREL Research Fellow John Turner investigating conductivity of acid membranes for use in PEM fuel cells her first 2 years. During her third summer, she built a test station that allowed her to synthesize combinations of metal oxides for splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen.

August 3, 2010 The Green Power Partnership's top purchasers use more than 12 billion kWh of green power annually, equivalent to the annual carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity use of more than 1 million average American homes. Green Power helps to prevent emissions from conventional power sources that are linked to harmful air pollution and climate change. Top 5 on list include Intel Corporation, Kohl's Department Stores, Whole Foods Market, City of Houston, and Dell Inc.
Landmark ADA of 1990 is honored, revised 20 years later.

August 3, 2010 Signed into law on July 26, 1990, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ensures equal access and opportunity for people with disabilities. Institute continues, two decades later, to advocate accessibility as essential building safety component and lists accessibility among requirements of high-performance buildings. On July 23, 2010, Attorney General Eric Holder signed regulations revising Department of Justice's Title II and III ADA requirements. Revisions go into effect in 6 months.
AMCA seeks volunteers to serve on Review Committee.

August 3, 2010 Approaching its periodic review period, ANSI AMCA 230-07 describes laboratory method of test for air circulating fans, which are defined as fans used for moving air within a space, are unconnected to any ducting, and are usually without a housing. Committee members would be expected to participate in drafting, review, and resolution of any and all comments on standard until revised standard is approved by ANSI as an American National Standard.
FAA Finds Mexico does not meet ICAO safety standards.

August 3, 2010 U.S. DoT's FAA, after assessing Mexico's civil aviation authority, announced Mexico does not comply with international safety standards set by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). As a result, U.S. is downgrading Mexico from Category 1 to Category 2. International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) Category 2 means Mexican air carriers cannot establish new service to U.S. but can maintain existing service. FAA will work with Mexico's government to help reestablish Category 1 rating.
Standard addresses testing of satellite positioning devices.

August 3, 2010 ASABE announced publication of international standard that provides procedure for evaluating and reporting accuracy of navigation data determined using positioning devices that are based on GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, or similar global navigation satellite systems. Because satellite positioning devices have become more common in agricultural applications, ISO 12188 focuses on performance of positioning devices while they are subject to motions typical of ground-based agricultural field operations.
EPRI Report measures consumers' interest in electric vehicles.

August 3, 2010 According to report from EPRI, 95% of people surveyed in Southern California say they would prefer to charge their electric vehicle at home, and 62% say they have a 3-prong, 120 V outlet that fulfills basic requirement for home charging. For 240 V charging, about 83% report having 240 V service in their residence, but may require an additional outlet closer to vehicle. About 75% said would pay a 33% premium over slower, at-home rate to fast charge at public facility.

August 3, 2010 Global Tire Expo by TIA, taking place as part of 2010 SEMA Show, will be held Tuesday-Friday, November 2-5, at Las Vegas Convention Center. More than 135 educational seminars will be available, including 70 sessions that address general business and management issues and 4 educational session tracks being held by TIA. Over 26% of buyers at 2009 SEMA Show sought tires and related equipment, so event will serve as convenient stop for 50,000-plus buyers that attend SEMA Show yearly.
NREL Solar Collector pre-heats air coming into buildings.

August 2, 2010 By using dark-colored, perforated metal plate on south side of a building, NREL scientists have perfected a way for buildings to pre-heat air coming in, reducing need for additional heating energy. Fan added to building's existing ventilation system slowly draws warmed ventilation air into building through plate. Solar energy absorbed by dark plate is transferred to air flowing through it, efficiently preheating air going into building as much as 40°F.

August 2, 2010 NTSB's recommendations include guidelines for research into effects of wind conditions at airports located downwind of mountainous terrain, and call for archiving of low-level windshear alert system data at these airports. They also cover rules for air traffic controllers on providing pilots with wind data and use of acquired data in pilot simulator training programs. Safety of cockpit crew seats and modification of galley latches to include mechanical fasteners is also covered.
WirelessHARTŪ approved as European National Standard.

August 2, 2010 HARTŪ Communication Foundation announced that the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) has approved WirelessHARTŪ specification as European National Standard EN 62591. CEN released the standard to CENELEC, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization, whose members are the national electrotechnical committees of 31 European countries. Approval confirms global acceptance of WirelessHART technology by users and suppliers.

July 30, 2010 US DoT's FAA celebrated opening of Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport's upgrade, which was paid for with $3 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds. Specifically, money helped Chattanooga Airport complete aircraft parking area that will aid in relieving congestion. FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt noted, "Recovery Act dollars are helping airports of all sizes maintain and improve their critical infrastructure."
Senate Commended on Federal Buildings Personnel Training Act.

July 30, 2010 NEMA commends US Senate on its passage, by unanimous consent, of S. 3250, the Federal Buildings Personnel Training Act, which will help reduce energy consumption of federal government by training federal facility managers to implement and properly use existing energy-efficient technologies. While encouraging House to follow suit, NEMA President and CEO Evan R. Gaddis said this can help reduce overall dependence on foreign oil while also reducing carbon footprint of federal government.
ASHRAE VP testifies to DOE on sustainable design standards.

July 30, 2010 U.S. DOE hearing on July 27 covered notice of proposed rulemaking on energy efficiency and sustainable design standards for new federal buildings and major renovations of them. ASHRAE VP Ross Montgomery encouraged DOE's Federal Energy Management Program to reference ANSI/ASHRAE/USGBC/IES Standard 189.1 compliance option of IGCC to meet requirements in rulemaking. Standard is first code-intended green building standard in U.S. and covers topics similar to green building rating systems.
Equipment Finance Economic Activity shows modest growth.

July 30, 2010 Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) shows overall new business volume for June up 6% against same period in 2009 and up 25% compared to prior month. Receivables over 30 days declined to 3.3%, while charge-offs showed slight increase from prior month but steep decline from one year earlier. Also, number of credit approvals climbed to 70% in June, and 2/3 of participating organizations reported submitting more transactions for approval during month.
