Kroll Zirconium Medal, which recognizes outstanding achievement in the scientific, technological, or commercial aspects of zirconium production and utilization, and encourages future efforts, studies, and research. A member of ASTM International since 1996, Banker assumed his role at Dynamic Materials in 2000 and specializes in explosion metalworking.
EPA Grants hope to spur new clean diesel technologies.

July 23, 2010 US EPA awarded $5.6 million for emerging technologies projects as part of its summer-long roll out of $120 million in clean diesel grants. Awards will provide opportunities to advance emerging technologies in marketplace as well as support both environmental innovation and green jobs to reduce diesel emissions. According tot EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson, "EPA is promoting innovations that will not only create jobs, but also keep dangerous pollution out of the air we breathe."

July 23, 2010 U.S. House Subcommittee on Government Management, Organization and Procurement held a hearing to examine federal government's role in greening buildings. Testifying at the hearing, ASHRAE President Lynn G. Bellenger said that, "over the years significant progress has been made in the federal, commercial, and residential sectors, and we are poised to embark on a new era of energy efficiency and taxpayer dollar stewardship that will lead us to net-zero-energy buildings."

Ivan Diaz-Loya, senior Ph.D. candidate and research assistant at Trenchless Technology Center at Louisiana Tech University. Graduate of Chihuahua Institute of Technology in Mexico, Diaz-Loya's current research focuses on characterizing new types of environmentally-friendly concrete, such as geopolymer concrete. He has received scholarships from Mexico's National Council for Science and Technology and NASTT.

July 22, 2010 The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, part of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has included an ASTM standard as part of its formal certification criteria for electronic health record technologies. ASTM E2369 outlines a way to create flexible XML documents that contain most relevant and timely healthcare information about a patient and to send these records electronically from one caregiver to another and to patients.

According to Tom Yacobellis, chairman of the standard sub-committee, standard provides very specific inspection and sampling protocols and will serve as an important tool for restoration professionals.

AEM Poll shows voter dissatisfaction with manufacturing job policies.

July 22, 2010 Based on poll of 1,000 voters, AEM says when participants learned only 3% of stimulus package funding was used for rebuilding and improving highways, roads, and bridges, 53% thought worse of package. Poll follows Nancy Pelosi's announcement that Democratic Caucus is developing plan to increase manufacturing jobs.
AASHTO Expert urges more funding for repairing nation's bridges.

July 22, 2010 With 12.4% of nation's bridges classified as structurally deficient, Malcolm T. Kerley, P.E., Chief Engineer with Virginia DoT, said states are investing substantially more in state dollars on bridges than is provided under Federal Highway Bridge Program. In testimony to Congress, Kerley also said states need federal funding to reduce slippage of bridges into structurally deficient category and, with enough funding, worst bridges can be fixed while preventing more from deteriorating.

July 22, 2010 Based on 119 metalforming companies queried in US and Canada, July 2010 PMA Business Conditions Report indicated that metalforming companies anticipate little change in business conditions during next 3 months. Metalforming companies also anticipate virtually no change in incoming orders for next 3 months. Also, average daily shipping levels dipped in July, and percentage of metalforming companies with portion of their workforce on short time or layoff remained unchanged.

July 22, 2010 On July 19, NASA Television launched full-time High Definition (HD) channel that media, cable, and satellite service providers can access for news content as well as coverage of agency missions and programs. ISS Update, a daily program covering activities of on-orbit International Space Station crews, will also air on this channel. Additional content will include NASA video file news feed, media conferences, lectures, satellite interviews, and special events.
Construction Materials Prices fall 0.9% in June.

July 22, 2010 Following 3 months of increases, price of construction materials and supplies in June fell 0.9%, according to July 15 PPI report by U.S. Labor Department. However, prices are up 0.8% for second quarter of year and are 4.2% higher from June 2009. According to ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu, construction materials prices relate to direction of commodity prices, and therefore decline in prices may reflect investor sentiment rather than actual foreshadowing of lost construction momentum.
