ANSI recognized by OSHA as approved crane operator accrediting body.

August 18, 2010 ANSI has been recognized as approved accreditor of crane operator certification programs by OSHA. Under new OSHA rule to address safety of cranes and derricks used in construction, all crane operator certification bodies must be accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting entity. OSHA has concluded that accredited third-party certification provides only reliable demonstration that crane operator has knowledge and skills needed for safe operation.

August 18, 2010 ANSI announced that KEMA Registered Quality is the first certification body to be accredited under the Institute's pilot program for Superior Energy Performance (SEP), which aims to provide industrial plants with road map for achieving continual improvement in energy efficiency while maintaining competitiveness. Under terms of SEP Program, a third-party certification body assesses conformance of a manufacturing facility to SEP requirements for energy intensity improvement.
ANSI partners with ACR for greenhouse gas accreditation program.

August 18, 2010 As part of its continuing commitment to enhance the accreditation program for greenhouse gas validation and/or verification bodies (V/VBs), ANSI has signed Memorandum of Understanding with American Carbon Registry (ACR). Through MoU, ACR and ANSI pledge to cooperate in ANSI accreditation program that evaluates conformance of V/VBs against ISO 14065, Greenhouse gases - Requirements for greenhouse gas validation and verification bodies for use in accreditation or other forms of recognition.

NASA selects contractor for Wallops Island Protection Project.

August 18, 2010 NASA has selected U.S. Army Corp of Engineers in Norfolk, VA for the Launch Facilities Protection Project at agency's Wallops Flight Facility in Wallops Island, VA. The USACE will extend a seawall approximately 1,300 ft to the south of the existing seawall located on Wallops Island, and place approximately 3.2 million cubic yards of dredged sand along shoreline. Project is scheduled to begin in fall 2010 and total contract value is not to exceed 49.5 million.

The 2010 technical program will address the theme, "Achieving Environmental Sustainability in a Resource Hungry World," as related to science, policy, industry, and sustainability. Congress will also include presentations from variety of distinguished speakers.

August 18, 2010 As announced by South Texas Section of SPE, 23rd International Polyolefins ConferenceŽ will take place in Houston, TX from February 27 to March 2, 2011. South Texas Section also issued call for papers for conference, which will revolve around theme of "Evolving Technology for the Global Economy." Abstracts are welcome on any topic involving polyolefins or flexible packaging and should be submitted by November 1. Papers or presentations are due by December 15.

August 17, 2010 Benjamin Hang's work focuses on development and use of tape-laying machine for automated production of tailored layups of unidirectional, thermoplastic tape for use in compression or injection molding processes and other forming methods. Francesco Deleo's work deals with developing numerical guidelines for explicit FEA of composite structures undergoing crash events to improve material models used in codes. He also works on developing better material models for fabric-reinforced composites.
FAA announces $9.2 million in Recovery Act projects for Atlanta.

August 17, 2010 With funding by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, flights at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta Intl. Airport will be safer and more efficient. FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt marked beginning of a $5 million ARRA project to install new approach lighting system for Runway 27L. Also, more than $1.5 million went to install new engine generator system for FAA's airport traffic control tower, and $2.6 million went to power distribution system for National Network Control Center in Hampton, GA.

August 17, 2010 ASTM F2843 - Specification for Condition 0 Bicycle Frames, developed by Subcommittee F08.10 on Bicycles, can be used to set strength requirements for condition 0 bicycle frames. Strength, endurance, and impact requirements for frames of these sidewalk bikes, or bikes designed for young children riding under adult supervision, will prove useful for manufacturers and designers. Adoption is expected to also provide working balance for safety, cost, and performance.
EPA to hold public hearings on proposed transport rule.

August 16, 2010 U.S. EPA will hold 3 public hearings on its proposed transport rule, which would reduce interstate transport of ozone and fine particle pollution from power plants that drifts across borders of 31 eastern states and District of Columbia. Proposed rule, along with local and state air pollution controls, is designed to help areas in eastern U.S. meet existing national air quality health standards. Each hearing will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 8 p.m. local time, or later if necessary.

August 16, 2010 Proposed ASTM standard - ASTM WK28941, Test Method for Determination of Strontium Concentration in Gypsum by Field Portable X-Ray Fluorescence - focuses on testing for strontium in wallboard. Being developed by Subcommittee C11.01 on Specifications and Test Methods for Gypsum Products, standard enables inspectors to reliably, quickly, and nondestructively determine strontium concentration as part of home inspection performed to identify problem drywall.

August 16, 2010 ASTM E2627, Practice for Determining Average Grain Size Using Electron Backscatter Diffraction in Fully Recrystallized Polycrystalline Materials, will be useful to metals users and producers. Electron backscatter diffraction can provide precise determinations as well as give information on grain size distribution and statistics. Because EBSD is a direct measurement of grain size, ASTM E2627 can be used to referee disputed measurements made through other techniques.

August 13, 2010 NAM President and CEO John Engler's statement, made after President Obama signed U.S. Manufacturing Enhancement Act of 2010, noted that this bill "will provide a needed boost to both large and small companies." Engler went on to say that this "legislation will also cut the costs of doing business in the United States and boost American manufacturing exports." He also said that additional work was needed, by Congress and Administration, to help lower trade barriers to increase exports.
