August 25, 2010 U.S. DoE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is seeking proposals to create computer models to help build and improve electric drive vehicle (EDV) batteries. Request for proposals for Development of Computer Aided Design Tools for Automotive Batteries, and related documents, are available online. Proposals are due September 14, 2010, and award amount that companies can apply for is up to $7.5 million with 50% cost share, for total amount up to $15 million over 3 yr.

FAA IASA Program gives Nigeria Category 1 safety rating.

August 24, 2010 U.S. DoT's FAA announces Nigeria's Category 1 rating under FAA's International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) program. This rating, based on results of July FAA review of Nigeria's civil aviation authority, means Nigerian air carriers may now apply to operate to U.S. with their own aircraft. Civil aviation authority meets international standards for technical expertise, trained personnel, record keeping, and inspection procedures.
Arizona DOT Director supports rest area commercialization.

August 24, 2010 In a Two Minute State DOT Update video, Arizona Department of Transportation Director John Halikowski explains why he is among a growing number of state officials seeking to amend a 1956 federal law that bans the commercialization of public rest areas. He says law does not give states flexibility needed to adequately fund rest areas. In 2009, Arizona closed 13 rest areas due to budget cuts and substantial costs associated with emergency snow removal following harsh winter storms.

He went on to say that it "is an important first step in focusing on the key issue of the development and procurement of medical countermeasures."
FAA creates Center of Excellence for space transportation.

August 24, 2010 U.S. Transportation Secretary, Ray LaHood, announced that FAA has selected New Mexico State University to lead Air Transportation Center of Excellence for Commercial Space Transportation. Research and development efforts will include 4 major areas: space launch operations and traffic management; launch vehicle systems, payloads, technologies, and operations; commercial human space flight; and space commerce, including space law, space insurance, space policy, and space regulation.

Items associated with residential construction have been impacted the strongest due to expiring tax credits.

August 23, 2010 A modified version of RoboCraneŽ, a floating platform developed by manufacturing research engineers at NIST, will be helping cleanup operations fly into action over destroyed reactor number 4 at the former Chernobyl nuclear power plant in northern Ukraine. PaR Systems, a company that owns a license to use the computer-controlled roving tool platform, modified NIST's Modular Suspended Manipulator to enable maneuverability throughout a large space while accommodating variety of tools.

New incarnations include condensed as well as industry- and market-specific models. Also, MEP has begun to sponsor ExporTechs in target countries so attendees have access to local resources.

August 23, 2010 NFB's Blind Driver Challenge, an innovative effort to create a non-visual interface that empowers blind person to operate an automobile, received 2010 Application of the Year Award at National Instruments Graphical System Design Achievement Awards ceremony. Students and researchers at Virginia Tech, using NI technology, developed semi-autonomous vehicle that allows blind driver to navigate, control speed, and avoid collision while traversing closed driving course.
