Ag Groups applaud Supreme Court ruling on biotech alfalfa.

June 24, 2010 U.S. Supreme Court has reversed lower court's nationwide ban on cultivation of biotech alfalfa. This remands case back to District Court and then back to USDA to determine what interim measures can be implemented while agency completes environmental impact statement process. News was welcomed by coalition of agricultural organizations who had filed joint friend-of-the-court brief to Supreme Court in support of petitioners in "Monsanto Co. v. Geertson Seed Farms."
Lifetime Achievement Award presented to William Ives.

June 24, 2010 William Ives, long-time legal counsel, was honored with BSA's Lifetime Achievement Award at association's 2010 Annual Convention in May in Naples, FL. During his presentation, Steve Durston, chairman of BSA's Past Presidents Council, noted that "Bill has been a part of our industry since BSA was formed in 1966" and that he "is the only legal counsel BSA has ever had." Ives offers accomplished and diverse legal career as well as a passion for history.
World Standards Week Dates announced for 2011.

June 24, 2010 World Standards Week (WSW) 2011 will take place October 10-14 in Washington, DC metro area. Annual celebration brings together members of standards and conformity assessment community in spirit of cooperation and collaboration. Gatherings scheduled for week include meetings of several ANSI groups and committees as well as ANSI's Annual Business Meeting and Luncheon. Also, 2011 ANSI Awards Banquet and Ceremony will also be held during WSW.

NSF certifies first membrane filter to water treatment program.

June 24, 2010 NSF International has announced that Hyflux Membrane Manufacturing Pte. Ltd. is first company to achieve NSF certification under its new NSF Public Drinking Water Equipment Performance Certification Program, which is based on U.S. EPA's LT2 rule. NSF conducted tests on Hyflux Kristal K-600ET0820 Ultrafiltration Membrane Module and certified it as meeting requirements for reduction of cryptosporidium, with average log removal value of 6.5 log10, and minimum LRV of 5.9 log10.
NSF certifies reactivated carbon for water treatment.

June 23, 2010 NSF International announced that Calgon Carbon Corporation's plant in Blue Lake, CA is first to receive NSF certification for reactivated carbon used for water treatment. NSF certification to NSF/ANSI Standard 61: Drinking Water System Components - Health Effects verifies that reactivated carbon is safe for reuse in municipal water treatment applications, such as those used to treat river, lake, or well water, making it potable for humans.
Energy Star helps auto plants improve energy efficiency.

June 23, 2010 According to report by Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions at Duke University, U.S. EPA Energy Star program has helped improve energy efficiency of auto manufacturing industry, which has cut fossil fuel use by 12% and reduced greenhouse gases by more than 700,000 tons of carbon dioxide. Report, Assessing Improvement in the Energy Efficiency of U.S. Auto Assembly Plants, affirms EPA's energy management strategy and demonstrates that performance of industry has improved.

June 23, 2010 IPC members participated in IPC's Capitol Hill Day June 9-10, where they visited 70 Congressional offices advocating support for legislations to strengthen North American electronic interconnect industry. Critical manufacturing competitiveness issues, including research and development tax credits and defense readiness, were paramount in discussions throughout event. Attendees were equipped with information and tools to help them advocate for the industry and their companies.

June 23, 2010 Department of Homeland Security announced adoption of standards for Voluntary Private Sector Preparedness Accreditation and Certification. PS-Prep program is a partnership between DHS and private sector that came about following a recommendation of 9/11 Commission to improve private sector preparedness for disasters and emergencies. Under agreement with DHS, ANSI - American Society for Quality National Accreditation Board will be the accreditation body for PS-Prep Program.
National Identity Verification Standard to be developed by NASPO.

June 23, 2010 ANSI-accredited standards developer North American Security Products Organization (NASPO) announced plans to hold meeting to commence development of national identity verification standard. Meeting will take place in Kansas City, MO on July 12 at 1 pm and end next day at 4:30 pm. Individuals and organizations who wish to participate in development process and attend this meeting must register to participate and commit to payment in advance of attendance.
BIO lauds passage of small business investment program.

June 23, 2010 BIO lauded Congressional passage of Small Business Early-Stage Investment Program, which will provide $1 billion in grants for venture capital investments in certain industries. Measure is contained in Title III of H.R. 5297, the Small Business Lending Fund Act of 2010. Under program, SBA's investments would be treated the same as investments by other limited partners in investment fund, except that SBA would not receive any control or voting rights with respect to early-stage small business.

June 22, 2010 US EPA is hosting 4 public information meetings on proposed study of relationship between hydraulic fracturing and its potential impacts on drinking water. Meetings will provide public information about proposed study scope and design, and EPA will solicit public comments on draft study plan. Public meeting schedule follows July 8 in Fort Worth, TX; July 13 in Denver, CO; July 22 in Canonsburg, PA; and August 12 in Binghamton, NY.
ASTM Committee approves latest corrosion inhibitor standard.

June 22, 2010 Part of ASTM International Committee G01 on Corrosion of Materials, Subcommittee G01.05 on Laboratory Corrosion Tests has been developing series of standards on performance testing of corrosion inhibitors, including most recently approved ASTM G202, Test Method for Using Atmospheric Pressure Rotating Cage. In addition, G01.05 is developing ASTM WK27103, Guide for Determining Corrosivity of Crude Oils, which will be used by production personnel, pipeline operators, and refinery operators.
ASHRAE publishes 2010 residential IAQ standard.

June 22, 2010 ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.2-2010 is the only nationally recognized indoor air quality standard developed solely for residences. It defines roles of and minimum requirements for mechanical and natural ventilation systems and building envelope intended to provide acceptable indoor air quality in low-rise residential buildings. Standard also encourages home retrofits to improve IAQ through allowance of alternative methods for meeting standard's requirements regarding kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans.
