September 1, 2010 AIA believes White House initiatives on export control modernization constitute an important step in reshaping export control system to better serve national security. Clarification and consolidation of Munitions and Commerce Control lists will have a dramatic impact on small- and medium-sized companies who rarely have resources to ensure compliance with current export control regime. President's initiatives also include consolidating licensing policies, export enforcement, and IT systems.
Initiative Introduces Students to motorsports manufacturing.

September 1, 2010 Patrick Dessert, PhD, CMfgT, assistant professor at Oakland University and SME membership consultant, developed curriculum for educating students in hands-on environment through Illinois Motorsports Institute (IMI). According to Dessert, "This is a great opportunity to get students involved in manufacturing in an exciting way." IMI's work, aimed at racing, vehicle restoration, and modification, is receiving support from SME Chicago Chapter No. 5.
Budapest Conference addresses quality, reliability concerns.

September 1, 2010 Free for qualified professionals, IPC Electronics Assembly Quality and Reliability Conference will be held in Budapest, Hungary on October 6-7, 2010. Topics will include status of Hungarian electronics industry, use of IPC standards in assembly and PCB manufacturing processes, as well as moisture levels in laminates during Pb-free processing. Other topics will address IPC Land Pattern Standard, tin whisker causes and solutions, and minimizing defects in assembly process.

September 1, 2010 LIA laser safety experts expressed concerned for public safety over 445 nm direct blue diode portable laser with output powers of up to 1 W sold via Internet retailer. Worries stem from Class 4 lasers emitting enough energy to be hazardous to eye or skin from direct beam or indirectly reflected laser light. Even exposure to reflections scattered off of matte surface may cause eye injury, and levels of light produced can cause visual interference at large distances away from source.
Motors Index surges in second quarter of 2010.

September 1, 2010 NEMA's Motors Shipment Index jumped 7.8% during second quarter of 2010. On year-over-year basis, index registered 16.1% rate of growth, but still remains approximately 16% below its peak. Of index's two underlying categories, inflation- and seasonally-adjusted shipments of fractional horsepower motors accounted for entirety of quarter's growth while demand for integral horsepower motors remained lackluster, given solid growth occurring in broader manufacturing sector.
Compact Fluorescent Lamp Index declines in second quarter 2010.

September 1, 2010 NEMA CFL index of 210.1 during second quarter of 2010 negated 3.1% year-over-year gain during previous quarter. CFL shipments decreased 4.2% on quarterly basis following increases of 14.0% and 1.8% for previous 2 quarters. Meanwhile, shipments of incandescent lamps decreased 2.8% on year-over-year basis, as index slipped to 57.0. This indicates shipments are less than 60% of 2006 levels. However, CFLs continue to gain market share at expense of incandescent lamps.
New AEM Group serves geospatial product manufacturers.

September 1, 2010 Resulting from Geomatics Industry Association of America (GIAA) member requests to affiliate with AEM rather than operate as separate organization, new AEM Geospatial Industry Group will serve manufacturers of various types of surveying/positioning systems. This new group's initial focus will include regulatory, standards, and specifications issues as well as growing membership.
Sodium Vapor Lamps shipments grow during second quarter.

September 1, 2010 Shipments of sodium vapor high intensity discharge lamps increased 3.9% to 92.6 in 2010 Q2, the highest level in 2 years. The index reading was 17.1% above the same period last year. Metal halide HID lamp shipments decreased 4.0% to 82.5 from previous quarter, but were still 0.5% above the same period last year. Mercury vapor HID index declined 9.5% to 49.2, indicating shipments were less than half of the average 2006 level.
Accreditation Program recognizes ENERGY STAR compliance.

September 1, 2010 Pilot accreditation program is available for certification bodies that seek recognition from US EPA to certify products under ENERGY STARŪ Program. Specifically, program will assess applicants against requirements set forth in EPA Conditions and Criteria for Recognition of Certification Bodies for ENERGY STAR Program; ISO/IEC Guide 65; and IAF - GD 5 - 2006, IAF Guidance on the application of ISO/IEC Guide 65. Applications will be accepted until September 27, 2010.

September 1, 2010 US National Committee (USNC) to International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) announced results of recent elections for USNC officer positions. James E. Matthews III has been nominated as chairman of Standardization Management Board (SMB) and vice president of IEC, and Philip M. Piqueira assumes role of USNC president elect. Alec McMillan has been elected as USNC vice president - technical, while Lori L. Tennant will assume McMillan's former role as USNC vice president - finance.

As 57 year old businessman who fostered Elk Horn's electric car interest, Mike Howard told Transportation TV that, when electric cars come, his town offers locations where people can charge their vehicles, enjoy the town, and continue on their journey. Also in Transportation TV report, Howard describes advantages and challenges that come with electric cars.
IPC Training Media offers automated testing feature.

FAA celebrates completion of SFO Recovery Act projects.

August 31, 2010 FAA marked completion of $14.5 million in runway projects funded by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 that will ensure continued safety for flights at San Francisco International Airport. In addition to leveling out 2 runways that tend to settle over time because of ground conditions, work included paving both runways with asphalt concrete, reconstructing sections of runways, upgrading lighting systems with energy-efficient LED lighting, and re-painting runway markings.
IPC releases PCB industry results for July 2010.

August 31, 2010 According to IPC's monthly North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were up 23.9% while bookings increased 34.4% in July 2010 from July 2009. Flexible circuit shipments in July 2010 were up 38.2%, and bookings were up 28.8% compared to July 2009. For rigid PCBs and flexible circuits combined, industry shipments in July 2010 increased 25.2% from July 2009, as orders booked increased 33.9% from July 2009. Combined industry book-to-bill ratio in July 2010 was 1.11.
ASTM Fellow Receives Award for work on roofing standards.

Cullen Award for his contributions to international standards for roofing and waterproofing. Henshell, who joined the organization in 1976, remains active member of both Committee D08 and Committee C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units. He specializes in moisture-related issues in building enclosures, including roofing, waterproofing, and masonry walls.

Logar's professional work focuses on sterilization of medical devices, which includes radiation processing and dosimetry.
