July 8, 2010 IEEE's 1680.2 Draft Standard for Environmental Assessment of Imaging Equipment and 1680.3 Draft Standard for the Environmental Assessment of Televisions will go to ballot from July 16-August 15, 2010. Calling for manufacturers to adhere to 115 criteria, standards will impact entire electronics manufacturing supply chain. To voice its concern, IPC urges members to join ballot to ensure both standards maintain IEEE's tradition of technically and scientifically based standards.
Plastics Industry Survey predicts improvement in jobs picture.

July 8, 2010 According to Spring 2010 survey by SPE and Gros Executive Recruiters, plastics industry professionals report gradually improving employment market. Number of companies likely to add employees this year is 47.6%, compared to 18.3% in last year's survey. Employees reported that they expect raises of 1-3% this year and 56.4% of managers concurred. In survey, 43% of employees reported they are somewhat to actively interested in finding a new job within next 12 months, down from 62% in 2007.

Members can also find doctor based on current GPS location, review details for that provider, and map directions to their office. For non-members, website facilitates process of shopping for insurance, getting quotes, and selecting plans.

July 7, 2010 According to Smart Grid Interoperability Panel, a major step toward standardized format for communicating actionable information on energy consumption to U.S. households has been achieved. Acting on plan developed by a priority action plan team of experts convened by SGIP, NAESB has agreed to develop a basic energy usage data model standard, which defines information used to communicate between utilities and the customer, and defines how that information is organized.

July 7, 2010 In victory for IPC members and Canadian electronics industry, Canadian Department of the Environment elected not to ban 5 rosin-containing substances from products manufactured and sold in Canada. Rosins are key ingredients in soldering materials used in manufacture of electronics products. Department concluded that rosins identified under Batch 10 of Canadian Chemical Management Plan are not inherently toxic, bioaccumulative, or persistent, and do not pose threat to human health or environment.
Pollution Cutting Proposal would protect Eastern states, DC.

July 7, 2010 US EPA is proposing regulations to cut air pollution that impairs air quality and harms health of people living downwind. Targeting power plant pollution that drifts across borders of 31 eastern states as well as District of Columbia, the transport rule would reduce power plant emissions of SO2 and NOx to meet state-by-state emission reductions. By 2014, rule and other state and EPA actions would reduce SO2 emissions by 71% over 2005 levels. NOx emissions would drop by 52%.

July 7, 2010 Subcommittee A05.13 on Structural Shapes and Hardware Specifications is at work on new standards - such as ASTM WK27436, Practice for Life-Cycle Cost Analysis of Corrosion Protection Systems on Iron and Steel Products - for engineers and architects who design with steel fabrications. Specifically, proposed standards will be used to evaluate costs of steel construction over project's lifetime and compare different corrosion protection systems on their impact to lifetime cost.

July 6, 2010 USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS) report, Adoption of Genetically Engineered Crops in the U.S., was released July 1, 2010. Key findings show that adoption of GE soybeans, GE cotton, and all biotech corn respectively reached 93%, 93%, and 86%. In response, BIO's Sharon Bomer Lauritsen said this data "provides more evidence that U.S. farmers continue to value biotech varieties...for the economic and environmental benefits they provide."
