NASA awards IR Sounder contract for first JPSS spacecraft.

September 24, 2010 NASA, on behalf of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, has awarded sole source contract to ITT Corporation for CrIS Cross-track Infrared Sounder instrument planned for flight on first Joint Polar Satellite System in 2014. CrIS will provide detailed atmospheric temperature and moisture observations for weather and climate applications. Under contract, ITT will manufacture, test, and deliver CrIS, support instrument integration on JPSS-1, and provide launch and post-launch support.
SAE Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress set for Oct. 5-6.

ASTM Standard assesses retroreflectivity of pavement markings.

September 24, 2010 An effort currently under way by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration to set national standards for minimum maintained retroreflectivity levels for pavement markings has illustrated the need for a practical protocol to measure such levels. In response to this need, ASTM International Committee D04 on Road and Paving has developed ASTM D7585/D7585M, which describes 3 techniques that can be used to assess markings.

September 24, 2010 On Sept 16, Senate Finance Committee Chair Max Baucus (D-MT) introduced Job Creation and Tax Cut Act of 2010. If enacted, bill will link 25(c) fenestration tax credits to 2010 ENERGY STAR® Program Requirements for Residential Windows, Doors, and Skylights, Version 5.0. Tax credit is currently tied to .30 U-factor/.30 SHGC threshold. Replacing .30/.30 standard with ENERGY STAR standards will simplify process of obtaining tax credit and purchasing fenestration products for the home.

September 23, 2010 According to Producer Price Index report, prices for construction materials edged up 0.2% in August and are 3.6% higher than 1 year ago. ABC Chief Economist, Anirban Basu says data support notion that nation's recovery in non-residential construction is beginning to stall. For 3 consecutive months, prices for softwood lumber, iron, and steel have been in decline, signaling lack of demand. Pricing power remains weak and there is little reason to believe prices will rise significantly in months ahead.

September 23, 2010 According to chairman of IPC Government Relations Committee Mikel Williams, new reporting requirements on the use of conflict minerals being drafted by U.S. SEC "could have a significant impact on the entire electronics industry supply chain." Fern Abrams, IPC director of government relations and environmental policy, explained IPC is working to modify IPC-1752A, Materials Declaration Management, to address supply chain's need to exchange data on metals derived from conflict minerals.

RIC assigns numeral from 1-7 to piece of plastic to indicate type, and is now described in ASTM International standard, ASTM D7611, Practice for Coding Plastic Manufactured Articles for Resin Identification. ASTM D7611 will be useful for those who buy, sell, and trade waste plastics that have completed their originally intended life.

According to D08 member Husnu Kalkanoglu, standard "will help define short- and long-term product performance for fiberglass mat reinforced self-adhesive membranes."

September 23, 2010 AAMA FenestrationMasters(TM) professional certification program was introduced on September 15, during Window and Door Dealers Forum seminar at the 2010 GlassBuild America show. Program's coursework covers subjects such as performance standards, product and material types, and code requirements. Available credentials include Certified Fenestration Master, which requires completion of 50 hr of coursework, and Certified Fenestration Associate, requiring completion of 30 hr of coursework.
