July 13, 2010 Concerning America's Transportation Awards Mississippi Valley regional competition, 10 transportation projects from 6 mid-America states were judged in 4 categories: Best Recovery Act Project; On Time; Under Budget; and Innovative Management. Each of 6 winning projects are in running for America's Transportation Awards Grand Prize and People's Choice Award. While Minnesota and Missouri Department of Transportation (DoT) received 2 awards each, Kansas and Iowa DoTs each won one award.

July 13, 2010 Gregory E. Saunders, director of the Defense Standardization Program Office for the U.S. Department of Defense, has been named recipient of 2010 W.T. Cavanaugh Memorial Award. Long an advocate for use of standards and their development through public-private partnerships, Saunders led DOD contributions to U.S. National Technology Transfer and Advancement Act. He also worked on recommendations in favor of a federal government policy to encourage use of voluntary standards.

July 13, 2010 NTSB recommendations H-10-01 through H-10-007, made to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, cover development of stability control system performance standards; requiring vehicle stability and lane departure warning systems on new vehicles with gross weight above 10,000 lb; as well as development and promotion of regulatory definitions and classifications for different bus body types. Furthermore, requirements addressed overhead luggage racks and on-board recording systems.
Manufacturing Technology Consumption up 52.9% in 2010.

July 13, 2010 Based on data from participating companies, AMT and AMTDA United States Manufacturing Technology Consumption report shows that $178.34 million total manufacturing technology consumption in May 2010 was down 22.9% from April but up 58.6% from May 2009. Compared to 2009, year-to-date total of $966.63 million for 2010 is up 52.9%. "Industry forecasts for the year have been revised slightly upward by many sources," said Peter Borden, President of AMTDA.

July 12, 2010 Announced at PowderMet2010, MPIF identified variable valve timing (VVT) as Powder Metallurgy (PM) Industry Landmark technology for its use of PM parts. Technology assists automakers to meet environmental and fuel-efficiency standards by advancing or retarding timing of intake/exhaust valves. VVT allows cam timing to change, resulting in improved engine efficiency and power over range of engine RPMs. Making PM parts for VVT systems offers cost savings over machining from wrought steel.
ASHRAE celebrates 35th anniversary of energy standard.

July 12, 2010 This year marks the 35th anniversary of publication of ASHRAE/IES energy standard, now known as ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings. Since its inception in 1975, Standard 90.1 has been widely adopted as the benchmark for energy efficiency in buildings. Using analyses performed by third party, energy reduction from 90.1-2004 to 90.1-2010 is currently estimated to be between 21.7-30.9%, depending on modeling assumptions.

July 12, 2010 At PowderMet2010, MPIF president Michael E. Lutheran said metal powder industry returned to its growth track. Second half of 2009 showed 28% rebound in iron powder shipments, and that continued into first quarter of 2010 when shipments were 64% above same period in 2009. Also, first quarter 2010 copper and copper-base powder shipments rose 36%. Other positive indicators were cited for light-vehicle market, powder metallurgy, metal injection molding, and hot isostatic pressing.

July 12, 2010 AIIM Industry Watch research report, SharePoint-strategies and experiences, found that 50% of SharePoint implementations were subject to formal business case, based on over 600 survey responses. Report indicates that ¼ of large organizations have no experience with ECM or DM systems, while 1/3 of all respondents have yet to define how SharePoint fits in with their existing ECM and DM system. Only 8% of survey respondents plan to phase out existing ECM suite in favor of SharePoint.

Integrated Environmental Modeling Hub (iemHUB) allows environmental researchers to analyze environmental problems and combine environmental models to promote a better understanding of the environment. Models can be developed for many applications, such as keeping beaches clean to predicting climate effects.
