ASTM International announces new Proficiency Testing Program.

September 3, 2010 In 2011, ASTM will offer Proficiency Testing Program on Elemental Analyses of Thermoplastics by Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry Utilizing Compression Molded Specimens. Program will utilize polyolefin samples and analysis according to ASTM D6247 or alternative XRF methods. Participants will receive 2 polyolefin resins plus test instructions for each test cycle. Upon completion, laboratories will electronically submit PTP data to ASTM to generate statistical summary reports.

September 3, 2010 With finely tuned spark of UV light, a physicist at NIST helped NASA scientists successfully position crucial UV sensor inside space-borne instrument to observe hidden layer of the Sun where violent space weather can originate. NIST's unique "sliding spark source," consisting of a pair of graphite electrodes with quartz surface in between, feeds UV light into NASA's Solar Ultraviolet Magnetograph Investigation instrument, which measures magnetic fields on the sun from space.
