January 20, 2014 U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx appointed 10 new members to FAA Management Advisory Council, which advises the FAA on management, policy, spending, and regulatory matters. New members include Steve Alterman, Bill Ayer, Montie Brewer, Ray Conner, Craig Fuller, Jane Garvey, Mayor Michael Hancock, Lee Moak, John "Jack" Potter, and Gwynne Shotwell. These established aviation leaders will help guide the FAA in its many critical air-transportation policy decisions.

January 20, 2014 According to ELFA's 2014 forecast, investment in equipment and software will reach all-time high in 2014, equipment replacement demand will continue to drive investment, and demand for equipment financing will increase due to greater federal budgeting stability. Rebounding of some industry sectors will spur varied equipment types, and majority of U.S. business will use some form of financing for equipment acquisition. Credit market conditions will remain favorable for long-term equipment financing.
AIA Supports New Regulations on aircraft repair security.

January 20, 2014 In her statement supporting new aircraft repair station security rule published by U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA), AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey commended actions taken to "balance the requirements to bolster security while also opening up new maintenance and repair options for airlines and industry." This is in light of, according to Blakey, a "log jam" which prevented 80+ repair stations from receiving certification review by FAA.
North American PCB Sales Improve despite weaker orders.

January 20, 2014 November 2013 North American PCB Statistical Program shows year-on-year sales growth strengthened while book-to-bill ratio declined to 0.91. Total PCB shipments increased 4.0% from November 2012. While still negative compared to same period in 2012, year-to-date shipment growth improved to -2.3% in November. Bookings fell 6.7% year-over-year, pushing year-to-date order growth back to -0.4%. PCB shipments and bookings in November were down 6.3% and 15.5%, respectively, compared to October 2013.

January 17, 2014 As announced by CEA®, 2014 International CES® featured record 2 million net square feet of exhibit space which housed 3,200+ exhibitors. More than 150,000 industry professionals attended, including over 35,000 of whom came from outside U.S. According to CEA's Gary Shapiro, "One-third of the world’s population interacted with CES in some way." Major tech breakthroughs and product launches were seen across 15 product categories and 25 market-specific TechZones.
NIMS issues record number of credentials.

January 17, 2014 NIMS announced that it awarded 13,888 industry-recognized credentials last year to individuals seeking to enter into or advance in jobs in the metalworking industry. This represents a 58.8% increase from 2012. NIMS has developed skills standards ranging from entry-level to master-level that cover breadth of metalworking operations. Institute certifies individuals' skills against these national standards via credentials that companies can use to recruit, hire, place, and promote workers.

January 16, 2014 Richard C. Sutherlin, manager of technical services at ATI Wah Chang, Albany, OR, has received the 2013 H.R. "Russ" Ogden Award from ASTM Committee B10 on Reactive and Refractory Metals and Alloys. A graduate of the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology of the University of Montana, Sutherlin was recognized for contributions to development of applications for reactive and refractory metals to be used in corrosive environments, with specific focus on zirconium, titanium, and niobium.

January 16, 2014 Used for developing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for concrete, Product Category Rules (PCR) v1.1 improves upon previous release by expanding required environmental impacts that must be reported in EPD. Also, scope of said document includes all countries that use similar standards referenced in PCR for evaluating and producing concrete. ASTM International and National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) have adopted PCR for use in their respective EPD programs.

January 15, 2014 Dr. James Webber, Ph.D. and senior scientist at Webber Environmental Health Consulting LLC, received Moyer D. Thomas Award from ASTM International Committee D22 on Air Quality. Honored for technical contributions and years of service to Committee D22, Webber has served as chairman since 2008 and also chairs Subcommittee D22.90. Former roles include secretary of D22.07 on Sampling and Analysis of Asbestos as well as one term on ASTM Committee on Technical Committee Operations (COTCO).

January 15, 2014 Chelsea Ehlert, a graduate student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has received the Mary R. Norton Memorial Scholarship from ASTM Committee E04 on Metallography. Award encourages female college seniors or first-year graduate students to pursue study of physical metallurgy or materials science, with emphasis on relationship between microstructure and properties. Ehlert is pursuing a doctorate in materials engineering; her thesis will focus on electrochemistry topics and battery research.

January 15, 2014 Nature Biotechnology has published peer-reviewed paper co-authored by BIO Industry Analysis and BioMedTracker, highlighting results of a study showing that overall success rate for drugs moving through clinical trials to FDA approval from late 2003 to the end of 2011 is near 1 in 10, while reports from earlier years showed rate of drug approvals to be 1 in 5 to 1 in 6. Study also shows that large molecule drugs are twice as successful in gaining approval compared to small molecule drugs.
ASTM invites papers for SPF insulation symposium.

January 14, 2014 Papers are invited for symposium on Developing Consensus Standards for Measuring Chemical Emissions from Spray Polyurethane Foam  Insulation, to be held April 30–May 1, 2015. Standardized methods are needed to assess potential impacts of SPF insulation products on indoor air quality and to establish re-entry/re-occupancy times after product installation in building and post-occupancy ventilation needs. Symposium will provide forum for exchange of ideas to aid in development of these standards.
