NIST identifies 5 foundational Smart Grid standards.

October 19, 2010 NIST has advised Federal Energy Regulatory Commission that it has identified 5 foundational sets of standards for Smart Grid interoperability that are ready for consideration by federal and state energy regulators. Produced by International Electrotechnical Commission, standards focus on information models and protocols important to efficient and reliable grid operations as well as cyber security. They will be updated as Smart Grid requirements and technologies evolve.
SAS-2.1 Standard forwarded to INCITS for public review.

October 19, 2010 Draft standard of Serial Attached SCSI (SAS)-2.1 has been forwarded to INCITS (International Committee for Information Technology Standards) for public review. As Vice President and T10 Committee Liaison for STA and Interface Architecture Initiatives Manager at Seagate Technology, Marty Czekalski commented, "SAS-2.1 includes Advanced Connectivity features which lay the groundwork for the next generation of SAS which will operate at 12Gb/s."
Air Traffic Control Tower Project Underway at Oakland Airport.

October 19, 2010 FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt helped break ground today for new air traffic control tower, funded by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), at Oakland International Airport. Totaling $33.2 million, grant for this project "will make a difference for the Oakland area economy," according to US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. Specifically, grant will pay for construction of 236 ft tall tower and 13,000 ft˛ base building as well as some equipment for facility.
Hydrogen Student Design Contest has deadline extended.

October 19, 2010 Due to requests from universities interested in Hydrogen Student Design Contest, deadline to submit abstracts and register new teams has been extended to November 1, 2010. There are currently 36 teams from 16 countries and 5 continents registered. This year, teams are tasked with planning and designing residential hydrogen fueling system for single residential building. Teams will also conduct economic analysis and develop business, marketing, and public education plans for their system.
NASA/NIA Conference to feature 100 mpg car, other technologies.

October 19, 2010 Edison2 won $5 million in Automotive X Prize competition for its Very Light Car, which will be one of several technologies featured at Aviation Unleashed from October 18-20. David Hinton, deputy director of NASA's Aeronautics Research Directorate, said "Edison2's knowledge and experience would interest an audience that's focusing on what's possible in aviation." During this event, participants can also learn about how video and tele-technology may shape travel.
CSPA to host 97th Annual Meeting in December.

Krishna is a Graduate Research Assistant in Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A & M University in College Station, Texas. Purpose of award is to encourage and recognize advances in science and engineering of thermoset polymer industry.

EPA appoints leaders to federal advisory group.

October 15, 2010 U.S. EPA Administrator, Lisa P. Jackson has appointed 30 local, state, and tribal elected and appointed officials to serve on agency's Local Government Advisory Committee. EPA will seek advice from local leaders on finding innovative solutions to challenges of climate change, improving air quality, protecting waters, and cleaning up communities. LGAC will also focus on how to better engage and serve disadvantaged communities historically underrepresented in environmental decision-making.
Manufacturers' Sales show increase in U.S. and Canada.

October 15, 2010 According to August 2010 sales data released by PTDA in its Market Outlook Report, sales of power transmission/motion control products by U.S. and Canadian manufacturers grew in August, after decline in July. U.S. sales were up 7.6%, while Canadian manufacturers' sales were up 2.6%. In U.S., year-to-date sales are up 10.2% over same period in 2009, and in Canada, sales are 12.0% ahead of 2009.
EPA waives E15 fuel limitations for some cars and light trucks.

October 15, 2010 EPA waived limitation on selling fuel that contains from 10-15% ethanol for model year 2007 and newer cars and light trucks. "Thorough testing has now shown that E15 does not harm emissions control equipment in newer cars and light trucks," said EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson. Agency is also proposing E15 pump labeling requirements, including specification of ethanol content of gasoline sold to retailers, and quarterly survey of retail stations to ensure proper gas pump labeling.
ASHRAE publishes 2010 editions of refrigerant safety standards.

October 15, 2010 The 2010 editions of ASHRAE's major refrigerants-related standards have been published as a package with 14 new refrigerant blends added. Requirements in ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 34-2010 and ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 15-2010 complement each other in that Standard 34 describes shorthand way of naming refrigerants and assigns safety classifications based on toxicity and flammability data, while Standard 15 establishes procedures for operating equipment and systems when using those refrigerants.

October 15, 2010 SEIAŽ and GTM Research released inaugural US Solar Market Insight(TM) report. In 2010, US solar electric market, including photovoltaic (PV) and concentrating solar power (CSP) installations, could surpass 1 GW of installed capacity in one year. Report's baseline forecast projects 944 MW of solar electric capacity will be installed in 2010. With 120 MW, California led states for installed capacity in first 6 months. In total, 341 MW were installed in first half of year.

October 15, 2010 When he addressed General Session of Solar Power International 2010, SEIA President and CEO Rhone Resch set goal for US solar industry to "become America's number one source of newly installed energy within five years." This is expected to be accomplished by deploying enough solar energy to power 2-million new homes each year by 2015. By reaching that goal, solar industry would reduce need for new coal and nuclear power plants as well as create jobs.
