September 28, 2010 Brady R. Cox, Ph.D., assistant professor at the University of Arkansas, has received C.A. Hogentogler Award from ASTM International Committee D18 on Soil and Rock. Cox was honored along with his co-authors Kenneth H. Stokoe and Ellen M. Rathje for their paper, "An In Situ Test Method for Evaluating the Coupled Pore Pressure Generation and Nonlinear Shear Modulus Behavior of Liquefiable Soils," which was published in the Geotechnical Testing Journal in 2009.

September 28, 2010 Dr. Viacheslav N. Shishov, senior researcher at A. A. Bochvar All-Russia Research Institute of Inorganic Materials (VNIINM) in Moscow, Russia, was awarded the William J. Kroll Zirconium Medal from ASTM International Committee B10 on Reactive and Refractory Metals and Alloys. Shishov received this medal for his contributions to understanding and significance of irradiation-induced microstructural changes in Zr-Nb alloys used in nuclear reactors.
NBB and ABFA urge Senate to extend biofuels tax incentives.

September 27, 2010 NBB and Advanced Biofuels Association, in joint letter to U.S. Senate Democratic and Republican Leadership, today urged chamber to retroactively extend biodiesel, renewable diesel, and alternative fuels tax credits through 2011 before adjourning for upcoming midterm elections. Lapse of tax incentives on December 31, 2009 and Congress' inability to enact legislation extending these incentives has significantly harmed biofuels producers and has caused instability in the marketplace.

September 27, 2010 HDMI Licensing, LLC now has 1,000+ licensed HDMI Adopters worldwide, 11% more compared to 2009. Consortium is also introducing online database tool, HDMI Product Finder, to help buyers, distributors, and resellers find HDMI-compliant products from licensed Adopters based on criteria such as features, functionality, and geographic region. Geographically, 30% of HDMI adopters are in China, 22% in Taiwan, 17% in North America, 13% in Europe and rest of world, 10% in Japan, and 8% in Korea.

September 27, 2010 ANSI/AAMI EC12:2000 (R 2010), Disposable ECG electrodes, establishes minimum labeling, safety, and performance requirements for disposable electrodes used for diagnostic monitoring. Revision includes adhesive performance section, which was added based on new data. ANSI/BHMA A156.6-2010, Architectural Door Trim, contains requirements for door protection plates, door edgings, push plates, and door pulls. Strength and finish tests, as well as dimensional and material criteria, are also included.
NSF Plumbing Standard referenced by CA building commission.

September 27, 2010 California Building Standards Commission now references NSF/ANSI Standard 14: Plastics Piping System Components and Related Materials, in California Plumbing Code for water piping systems. Commission has removed state's amendment that excludes use of cross linked polyethylene (PEX) for water piping systems, and PEX must meet Standard 14 - 2009 requirements. Effective date to comply was August 18, 2010, for 2007 California Plumbing Code and is January 1, 2011, for 2010 California Plumbing Code.
IMTS 2010 sets stage for strong manufacturing comeback.

September 27, 2010 Total registration for International Manufacturing Technology Show 2010, which ran from Sept 13-18, was 82,411. IMTS covered 1,137,375 square feet of exhibit space with 1,728 companies exhibiting in 1,180 booths. Along with healthy traffic on show floor, event included Emerging Technology Center, Advanced Manufacturing Center, re-invented Industry and Technology Conference, a Manufacturing Museum, and National Institute for Metalworking Skills Student Summit.

September 24, 2010 ANSI is seeking public comments on database that will serve as directory of technical requirements - standards, technical regulations, conformity assessments - used in US market for 5 industry sectors: IT, telecom, petroleum, water purification, and construction equipment. Once complete, directory will help reduce duplicative and/or overly burdensome requirements for US industry in foreign markets. Development directory is being completed by ANSI under US-India SCCP.

NASA awards IR Sounder contract for first JPSS spacecraft.

September 24, 2010 NASA, on behalf of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, has awarded sole source contract to ITT Corporation for CrIS Cross-track Infrared Sounder instrument planned for flight on first Joint Polar Satellite System in 2014. CrIS will provide detailed atmospheric temperature and moisture observations for weather and climate applications. Under contract, ITT will manufacture, test, and deliver CrIS, support instrument integration on JPSS-1, and provide launch and post-launch support.

ASTM Standard assesses retroreflectivity of pavement markings.

September 24, 2010 An effort currently under way by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration to set national standards for minimum maintained retroreflectivity levels for pavement markings has illustrated the need for a practical protocol to measure such levels. In response to this need, ASTM International Committee D04 on Road and Paving has developed ASTM D7585/D7585M, which describes 3 techniques that can be used to assess markings.
