ASTM Symposium to address building economic standards.

January 23, 2014 ASTM's suite of E06.81 standards provides framework for measuring and managing economic performance of buildings and other constructed facilities over their entire life cycle. Scheduled for Oct 5, 2014, symposium titled "Idea to Impact: How Building Economic Standards Keep You on Track," will demonstrate how to use the framework, how various E06.81 standards fit together and reinforce each other, and how these standards help economic performance of engineering projects.
NADCA submits testimony on aluminum pricing and supply.

January 23, 2014 NADCA submitted formal testimony to Senate Banking Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Protection for the hearing titled, "Regulating Financial Holding Companies and Physical Commodities." This is the second Senate hearing investigating ownership of metals warehouses by banks and holding companies and their relationship with the London Metals Exchange. NADCA applauds Committee for looking into possible market manipulation which impacts everything from autos to toys to airplanes.
EPA takes step in implementing electronic manifest.

January 23, 2014 EPA issued final rule that is a crucial step in the development of a national electronic manifest system, which will upgrade paper-based system of tracking hazardous waste to an electronic one. Rule authorizes use of e-Manifests to track hazardous wastes under Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Once implemented, national e-Manifest system will provide greater access for emergency responders to information about types and sources of hazardous waste that are in transit.
EPA releases final Bristol Bay Assessment.

January 23, 2014 Over 3 years, EPA compiled the best, most current science on the Bristol Bay watershed to understand how large-scale mining could impact this area. EPA's report, titled "An Assessment of Potential Mining Impacts on Salmon Ecosystems of Bristol Bay, Alaska," concludes that large-scale copper and gold mining poses risks to salmon and Alaska Native cultures. Bristol Bay produces nearly 50% of the world’s wild sockeye salmon with runs averaging 37.5 million fish each year.
NTSB Releases Top 10 transportation improvements sought in 2014.

January 23, 2014 NTSB released its 2014 Most Wanted List, which aggregates top 10 advocacy and awareness priorities for 2014. These include, for first time, improving operational safety in rail mass transit. Other new additions include helicopter operations, occupant protection, and passenger vessel safety. Furthermore, list includes fire safety, perils of distraction, general aviation, pipeline safety, positive train control, and substance-impaired driving.

FAA proposes civil penalty against Talon Air, Inc.

January 23, 2014 FAA is proposing $150,000 civil penalty against Talon Air, Inc., of Farmingdale, NY, for allegedly violating Federal Aviation Regulations by allowing 4 pilots to fly without proper training or examinations. FAA alleges that 3 pilots did not undergo recurrent training or receive competency flight checks within required periods of time, and that fourth pilot’s initial training was conducted by unqualified person. As a result, none were qualified to fly charter carrier’s Hawker 4000 aircraft.

Respondents may answer questions that relate to their type of operations, focusing on specific end-use applications.

January 21, 2014 Released by EPRI, "Analysis of Automatic Control Data for Storage Operations" identifies, collects, and analyzes operating data from California Independent System Operator (ISO) to address use of energy storage for regulation services. Collected operating data covers one full week (June 6–12, 2010), which was selected to facilitate current and potential future work. Additional analyses, including valuation and portfolio analyses, are suggested.
BIO Lauds House and Senate for 2014 omnibus spending agreement.

January 21, 2014 BIO applauded House and Senate appropriators for agreeing upon fiscal year 2014 omnibus spending package, which includes provisions for allowing FDA to access $85 million in user fees sequestered in 2013. In urging House and Senate to approve this package as soon as possible, BIO's Jim Greenwood said "It makes no sense to subject private company-paid user fees to sequestration." BIO also expressed support for overall funding for FDA, NIH, biodefense, and oversight of 340B program.
A4A Lauds Omnibus Appropriations Bill as a win for travelers.

Targeted funding and lack of new aviation taxes were cited as helping to ensure reliability and efficiency of air travel while improving how customers travel through security and customs. Another lauded aspect of said bill, of concern to passengers and shippers, includes strategy development to increase risk-based screening eligibility to one-half of all passengers.
EPA announces regional administrator for Atlanta office.

January 20, 2014 EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy announced President Obama's selection of Heather McTeer Toney as regional administrator for EPA's Region 4 office in Atlanta. Ms. McTeer Toney was the first African-American and first female to serve as the Mayor of Greenville, MS, holding that post from 2004-2012. She joins EPA from Mississippi Valley State University, where she is the Executive Director of the Center for Excellence in Student Learning. She is also the Principal Attorney at Heather McTeer, PLLC.
ASTM Standard addresses absorbable vascular stents.

January 20, 2014 Absorbable stents are designed to open clogged blood vessels and restore blood flow, similar to permanent metallic stents, but are temporary and completely absorbed in time. ASTM F3036, Guide for Testing Absorbable Stents, will be used to drive consistency in the way physical and mechanical properties of vascular scaffolds are evaluated, from initial manufacturer to absorption within patient's body.

According to Jim Greenwood, legislation would help advance global goals by ensuring that trade agreements reflect high level of IP rights modeled on U.S. laws, strengthening transparency and accountability of drug reimbursement regimes, and removing unjustified barriers to agricultural biotech trade.
