October 29, 2010 With team registration deadline of November 1, Hydrogen Education Foundation's 2010-2011 Hydrogen Student Design Contest, Residential Fueling with Hydrogen, continues to receive interest from universities worldwide as well as companies in hydrogen and fuel cell industries. Pool of entrants has grown to include 47 teams from 17 countries and 5 continents. Among these, registrants include 8 teams from top 50 engineering schools in world and 7 teams from top 20 engineering schools in U.S.

October 29, 2010 US Fuel Cell Council (USFCC) and National Hydrogen Association (NHA) are merging in order to form the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy Association (FCHEA), which aims to accelerate commercialization of fuel cell and hydrogen energy technologies. Through its unified voice, organization will drive need for fuel cells and hydrogen as integral components of clean energy portfolio. Organization, led by President and Executive Director Ruth Cox, will be headquartered in Washington, DC.
Interagency Conference called to address import safety.

October 29, 2010 Representatives from 10 federal agencies gathered at Interagency Import Safety Conference to focus on efforts to protect health and safety of U.S. consumers and the environment from unsafe imports. Among other measures, agency leaders agreed to enhance efforts to help private sector comply with import safety requirements, use risk-management strategies to streamline lawful trade, and adhere to consistent enforcement measures to deter imports of unsafe products.
NIST ships first programmable AC/DC 10-Volt standard.

October 29, 2010 Extending its 26-year tradition of quantum voltage standards, researchers at NIST have begun shipping a 10 V standard to users around the world. The new technology relies on superconducting integrated circuits containing about 300,000 Josephson junctions, whose quantum behavior ensures that every junction produces exactly the same voltage. System enables wide range of applications by producing AC waveforms for accurately calibrating AC signals with frequencies up to a few hundred hertz.
Microrobotics Challenge seeks miniature medics, maze masters.

October 29, 2010 Teams engaged in microrobotic, microelectronic, or microelectromechanical systems research are invited to participate in NIST Mobile Microrobotics Challenge 2011. Held as part of 2011 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation that takes place May 9-13, competition will pit microrobots with dimensions measured in micrometers against each other in 2 events - navigation and microassembly - to test agility, maneuverability, control response, and object moving capabilities.
NIST and Harvard Researchers share 2010 Julius Springer Prize.

October 29, 2010 NIST physical scientist Henri Lezec and Federico Capasso of Harvard have received the Julius Springer Prize for Applied Physics 2010 for their pioneering achievements in nanoscale physics and applications. Lezec, who joined NIST Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology in 2007, received his Ph.D. from MIT in 1992. His work spans broad range of topics associated with interaction of light with materials and nanoscale structures, i.e. plasmonics and nanoplasmonics.
IREC Webinar to address fire safety code changes.

Both 2012 editions of International Fire Code and NFPA Fire Code will include requirements for photovoltaic installations, which are based on Draft Solar Photovoltaic Installation Guideline issued by California Office of State Fire Marshal. FAA dedicates new Reno air traffic control tower.

October 28, 2010 FAA dedicated modernized 195 ft tall air traffic control tower at Reno-Tahoe International Airport. Controllers will now have multicolor radar displays, touchscreen voice communications, and touchscreen work stations that provide instant information on everything from weather conditions to air traffic manuals. Double-thick sun shades will help prevent glare inside 610 sq-ft controller work area, while two backup power systems will help ensure uninterrupted operations.

October 28, 2010 IPC announced rigid PCB shipments and bookings in September 2010 were up compared to September 2009, year-to-date, and previous month, with book-to-bill ratio of 1.03. Flexible circuit bookings were down compared to September 2009 and previous month, as ratio fell to 0.97. For rigid PCBs and flexible circuits combined, shipments and bookings increased as ratio declined to 1.03. Denny McGuirk of IPC noted that growth in orders has led to sales growth which has decreased book-to-bill ratio.

ELFA Finance Report shows strong gains in September.

October 28, 2010 Reporting economic activity for equipment finance sector, ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) shows overall new business volume for September as $5.8 billion. This figure is up 23% compared to 2009 and is largest annual increase in 2 years. Credit quality is mixed, with receivables over 30 days decreasing to 3.4% in September from 4.3% in August and losses increasing to 1.7% from 1.3%. Improving from 56.9 in September, Monthly Confidence Index for October is 58.8.
