November 1, 2010 Safety, Mobility, and Aging Drivers forum, chaired by NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman, will include 5 experts that will address subjects such as safety risks, occupant protection, highway and vehicle design improvements, driver performance, training and rehabilitation, and state programs and practices. Forum is open to all, free to attend, and will also be webcast live on NTSB's website.
FAA awards $18 million grant to Seattle-Tacoma airport.

November 1, 2010 FAA announced award of its largest Voluntary Airport Low Emission grant for $18.3 million project at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to improve air quality and to reduce use of conventional fuels at airport. With VALE grant, Sea-Tac will be able to install centralized preconditioned air plant that will allow aircraft arriving at gates to shut off auxiliary power units and connect to cleaner central heating and cooling system, greatly reducing aircraft emissions on the ground.
Government Trade Official to direct NAM international policy.

November 1, 2010 US government trade expert Stephen P. Jacobs will join NAM on November 1 as senior director for international business policy. In addition to overseeing NAM's investment, international standards, and international intellectual property protection advocacy, his responsibilities will include looking after NAM's interests in Western Hemisphere and European commercial affairs. He will also assist NAM members in formulating approaches to solving specific trade or investment problems.

November 1, 2010 NIST is participating in worldwide effort to recommend major revisions to International System of Units (SI). Most significant change would be to kilogram, which is only one of SI's 7 base units still defined by material artifact, a 130-year-old platinum-iridium cylinder, with mass that changes slightly over time. The proposed revision, which defines kilogram in terms of Planck constant h, "puts the SI on a firm foundation," says Ambler Thompson of NIST.

November 1, 2010 Since 2009, EPRI has been conducting LED Energy Efficiency Demonstration in order to try and discover light bulb that meets outdoor lighting requirements of consumers while using less electricity. Assessments have been made for LED-based street and area lights at over 20 sites within US using EPRI-developed remote controlled roving light measurement vehicle named Scotty. This mobile robot can measure all types of lights, including LED.

While global EMS market is projected to grow 12.2% annually through 2014, assembly market growth in North America is forecasted to spike 28% in 2010 as recovery takes hold and resume normal growth of 12% in 2011.

Through its unified voice, organization will drive need for fuel cells and hydrogen as integral components of clean energy portfolio. Organization, led by President and Executive Director Ruth Cox, will be headquartered in Washington, DC.
Interagency Conference called to address import safety.

October 29, 2010 Representatives from 10 federal agencies gathered at Interagency Import Safety Conference to focus on efforts to protect health and safety of U.S. consumers and the environment from unsafe imports. Among other measures, agency leaders agreed to enhance efforts to help private sector comply with import safety requirements, use risk-management strategies to streamline lawful trade, and adhere to consistent enforcement measures to deter imports of unsafe products.

October 29, 2010 Extending its 26-year tradition of quantum voltage standards, researchers at NIST have begun shipping a 10 V standard to users around the world. The new technology relies on superconducting integrated circuits containing about 300,000 Josephson junctions, whose quantum behavior ensures that every junction produces exactly the same voltage. System enables wide range of applications by producing AC waveforms for accurately calibrating AC signals with frequencies up to a few hundred hertz.
Microrobotics Challenge seeks miniature medics, maze masters.

October 29, 2010 Teams engaged in microrobotic, microelectronic, or microelectromechanical systems research are invited to participate in NIST Mobile Microrobotics Challenge 2011. Held as part of 2011 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation that takes place May 9-13, competition will pit microrobots with dimensions measured in micrometers against each other in 2 events - navigation and microassembly - to test agility, maneuverability, control response, and object moving capabilities.
NIST and Harvard Researchers share 2010 Julius Springer Prize.

October 29, 2010 NIST physical scientist Henri Lezec and Federico Capasso of Harvard have received the Julius Springer Prize for Applied Physics 2010 for their pioneering achievements in nanoscale physics and applications. Lezec, who joined NIST Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology in 2007, received his Ph.D. from MIT in 1992. His work spans broad range of topics associated with interaction of light with materials and nanoscale structures, i.e. plasmonics and nanoplasmonics.

FAA dedicates new Reno air traffic control tower.

Controllers will now have multicolor radar displays, touchscreen voice communications, and touchscreen work stations that provide instant information on everything from weather conditions to air traffic manuals. Double-thick sun shades will help prevent glare inside 610 sq-ft controller work area, while two backup power systems will help ensure uninterrupted operations.
